Baby Products Reviews of ERGObaby Heart2Heart Infant Insert, NaturalCustomer Review: It works but it's very hot Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the Ergo baby carrier along with the Heart2Heart Infant Insert for my 3rd baby. He was born in March and I have used this carrier with the insert with him since he was 2 weeks old. It worked GREAT when he was that little. The insert kept him snuggled close and really supported him in the upright position. However, that was at the beginning of April, when it is still cooler weather outside (low 70's). In the mornings it was still cool enough to put him in the carrier and walk my oldest daughter to school. By the afternoon, though, it was way too hot (mid-to-upper 70's) to have him bundled inside the insert for any length of time. Now that it's July, I can't put him in the insert outside at all, it's just too hot. I live in Okinawa, Japan, but the humidity and heat here are very similar to that of Florida summers (I've lived there, too). Now that my son is 3 months old and has good head control I can take the base out of the insert and use just that in the carrier, to prop him higher so he's not sitting below the top of the carrier. But if he didn't have good head control I could not do this and the insert would've been a waste of money. So if your baby is due in spring or summer and you live in a hot/warm climate, I wouldn't bother with the infant insert. It will just make you and the baby way too hot. I do totally recommend the Ergo baby carrier, though. I wish I'd had it when my older two were babies!
Customer Review: A must for newborns! Very safe and secure for the Ergo Carrier!! Summary: 5 Stars
First off. I am loving the Ergo for my second baby. First baby I used a few slings, wraps, and Baby Bjorn. All were just OK. (not fond of the Baby Bjorn at all.) I splurged with my second baby and purchased the Ergo Organic carrier and Infant Insert even though I already had several carriers. Love, love, love the Ergo and it feels so much better on your back. I can carry my baby for long periods of time while cleaning in the house or shopping in the mall without any back pain or discomfort.
OK - now for the Ergo Baby Infant Insert. This is a must for newborns who are still like little fetuses for the first couple of months. Super easy to put them in by laying them down on top of it and hooking the insert strap. The insert provides a little seated pillow perch for the newborn to sit on allowing their legs to lay comfortably bent as they naturally are at the beginning. Also easy to pick them up in the insert and place them in the Ergo. My baby falls asleep instantly in this. I agree with other reviews that the insert is very comfortable for winter babies (my baby was born in November) but may be a bit hot and uncomfortable in the summer months. Not sure that you could get around that heat problem. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and felt that it was priced well at $25. The insert allows you to use your Ergo carrier from day one.
Customer Review: worth getting Summary: 4 Stars
I read a bunch of reviews on this product and had trouble deciding if it was worth a try since so many people had problems with the infant insert. So here is my two cents. We started using it at about 4 weeks, and she has always been quite content in the ergo carrier with the insert (she is now 3.5 months) and often falls asleep. It helps with head support, and if angled properly, she can lean back and sleep with her head resting back. Sometimes it helps to fold it down to put the thick part lower for support. The main drawback is that it is hot! so for a june baby we have mostly used it indoors (at Costco and people's houses), but this fall it will be great. I also think the little strap that holds it closed could be designed better. You can cinch it up tighter, which was nice when she was littler to keep her head from falling forward (she is a small baby 10.5 lbs at 8 weeks), but it slips right out and becomes loose again the minute the baby moves. And the snap comes undone easily. It would be better if the strap were a length of soft velcro that could attach to the sticky velcro on the insert, and maybe have two straps for better adjustability (in case the manufacturers ever look at these things). All in all, 25$ was worth the extra months of use we got out of the ergo carrier with this.
Customer Review: Didn't really work for us Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered the heart to heart insert after trying to use the original infant insert with my Ergo carrier. My daughter LOVES to be held on my chest. She often falls asleep that way. I was having a hard time figuring out how to use the original infant insert and came across the heart to heart insert (I didn't realize there were two when I ordered the original). I had used the original insert a few times and she would just fall asleep in it, but I was never really sure if I had her positioned correctly. So I decided to get the heart to heart. I tried to use the heart to heart a few times, but she would just cry when I put her in it. I ended up going back to the original insert and sending back the heart to heart. Once she got a bit bigger (she was only 6 lbs when she was born), I found the original insert worked just fine. Also, I agree with a few other reviewers that the Ergo is really hot. My baby was born in April and we've tried using the Ergo but it has just been too hot. I also have a Baby Bjorn, which is not much better in hot weather. The one thing I REALLY like about the Bjorn is that she can face out. She loves being held facing out, so I got the Bjorn so I could actually get my hands back. It has worked great so far. I think the Bjorn is much easier to figure out.
Customer Review: works just like they say it will Summary: 5 Stars
I have a 3-month old who loved being carried around in the Moby wrap, but it can be a bit of a hassle to put that wrap on. I wanted to be able to use my Ergo, but couldn't get him comfy in it sitting sideways, he likes to be upright. This is perfect, the cushion under the bottom lifts him up just the right amount, so the back of the carrier is just at shoulder level, and his little legs sit at right angles, so he's not putting all his weight on his crotch. The back of the insert can be folded down over the Ergo, or propped up. When he's sleeping, I prop it up, when he's awake & wants to look around I fold it down. This is a good quality item, and worth the $$ so you can use your Ergo while your babe is little. I often see cloth items and figure out how I could sew them myself, but this is not one of them. I recommend buying this, and I would prefer this over the old Ergo infant insert.
Just to add, the first 4 times I tried using this, my baby fussed and didn't like it. But I kept trying it, and found that by catching him in a good mood (instead of trying to put him in when he was fussy) we were able to get him used to it, and now he loves it.
