Baby Products Reviews of ERGObaby Heart2Heart Infant Insert, Natural

Customer Review: I love it, the baby loves it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a little skeptical after reading some reviews of the infant insert, but I decided to try it out anyway. I have used the Bjorn and various maya type slings, and this is by far the most comfortable carrier. I'm prone to plugged ducts and mastitis, and this carrier with the insert puts no pressure on my chest, so it's great in that regard.
I started using the infant insert when my newest was almost 3 weeks old. It was a little hard to figure out where her feet and legs go at first, and she was really uncomfortable when I tried to splay them out and have her feet poke out the sides. That's definitely not the way to do it with such a little baby. I found that the trick is to have her knees up following the line of the fabric just along the inside of the padding and her feet almost touching and down at the V shaped base. You may think they're getting squished but she doesn't complain at all so it must be comfortable for her.
I also couldn't figure out whether she was supposed to have her head resting on the top edge, kind of sitting away from my body or resting on my chest. She took care of that for me. When she's awake her head is up and she's peering around. When she gets tired she puts her head down on my chest and rests very comfortably.
The hotness factor was also something I read about. My daughter was born in mid June and we live in Maryland, where it's pretty hot and humid in the summer. Yes, the insert is hot. But so is the Bjorn, and so are slings. I just put her in a onesie and we're both a little damp on the chest when she comes out. No big deal, really. I think the pros outweigh the one con that it's hot.
So it does take a little fiddling to get it just right, but once you do it's super comfortable for you as the wearer, and a nice little nest for the baby to ride around in. I definitely recommend it!

Customer Review: Mimics the way I cuddle my baby
Summary: 4 Stars

We purchased the Ergo Baby carrier and Heart to Heart infant insert for use with our two-month-old son. Overall, my baby and I are very happy with the product.

Pros:

1. I love that this insert holds the baby upright -- my son definitely prefers being carried this way. (The older style infant insert carries the baby in a reclining position, "sling-style.")

2. The insert positions the baby EXACTLY the way I hold him when I'm cuddling him close to my chest. The little padded seat holds him up the way I hold him with my hands, and his legs are positioned exactly the same way. This tells me that the Heart to Heart insert really does mimic the most natural way of carrying a child.

3. It doesn't put all his weight on his crotch, unlike other front carriers.

Cons:

1. It's very fluffy and padded. This is great for winter time, as you don't need coats or blankets for the baby. But if you were to carry a summer-born infant in this carrier, you and he might become uncomfortably warm.

2. It's a little tricky to position the baby in comfortably, and the directions aren't entirely clear. (At one point, the directions say it's important to put your hands under the baby's bottom and rotate the baby forward, which I'm still not quite sure I'm doing correctly.) But after a couple times, it's much easier.

3. The baby's feet are still inside the carrier and always feel a bit squished. My son seems perfectly comfortable, so I'm sure it doesn't bother him, but they do look rather squished.

Overall, I would highly recommend this product for a fall- or winter-born baby. If you live in a place with very hot weather and your baby will be a newborn during the warm months, you might need something a little more light weight.

Customer Review: Still not the best head support for infants
Summary: 3 Stars

So I received the ergo with my first child, after she was 6 months old. I didn't use it too much as she wasn't into being in any carrier. My sister, however, used the ergo alot and loved it. So with my 2nd baby, I bought the new heart to heart infant insert, thinking it'll make it more like the bjorn but with better back support for me with the waist belt.

I do think the new heart to heart is nice, since the baby is higher up on your chest and can see you better; but, I still don't really like it. I tried the ergo with the new infant insert when my baby was 4 weeks old, and she DID NOT like being squished facing me. She did like the cradle position, but that put ALOT of stress on my low back since it really made me front heavy with her sideways. I tried it again when she is 10 weeks old and she still doesn't have good head support (her head is above the actual ergo carrier, and the insert is floppy with little support). I folded the top part of the insert over and that helped a bit, but I'm constantly fidgeting with it, as it loosens up as I move around with the baby. And again, she hates being squished when she's facing me.

I have the baby bjorn and while it doesn't have as much support for me, it does support my baby well. She can face me without being squished and still move her head a bit with good head support. I also like the straps of the baby bjorn, as they are wide and flat against my body; vs. the bulky ergo straps and the buckles on the ergo end up being between my arms and torso - rubbing uncomfortably after a couple of minutes.

So while my baby is in the newborn stage and light enough, I'll continue to use the baby bjorn. When she has better head control and begins to get heavy, I'll likely switch to the ergo when I don't have to deal with the infant insert.

Customer Review: Ergo is nice but bulky, need instructional video too.
Summary: 4 Stars

I like the Ergo baby carrier. I purchased this in addition to the heart 2 heart insert and used it on my son when he was 4 weeks old. After I purchased the carrier and insert I found several other carriers that appear to be comparable and had probably other options that I would have considered, such as being able to carry the baby facing outward.

Pros:

1. Allows for using the Ergo carrier for newborns/infants safely.
2. Does not constrict baby's legs/thighs like the crotch style carriers.
3. Works well once you learn how to use it properly - it takes several tries though.

Cons:

1. Bulky to carry around. Mine didn't come with a travel bag. Having to carry a diaper bag, the baby carseat, and other miscellaneous stuff - it would be nice if this carrier could be folded more compactly so that it wasn't so bulky. Especially if you have to use the infant insert too.
2. Infant insert had to be purchased separately and I first purchased the original insert thinking it was the heart 2 heart; had to return it and lost a few bucks paying for return shipping.
3. The new Heart 2 Heart Infant insert does not have good instructions on how to use it properly.
4. Baby's feet feel like they are being squished and I kept worrying that he was hurt.
5. It was a hassle to use the insert with carrier while out and about. Okay when you are at home or somewhere that has a good flat surface to place the insert down on, then placing the baby on it while you also have to put on the carrier itself - it takes quite a few steps to get this on when you have to use the infant insert.

Customer Review: Comfy, but impractical for diaper changes on the go
Summary: 3 Stars

This insert is definitely needed for newborns, as the regular Ergo (without insert) does not support baby's head adequately if he/she hasn't developed good head control. It's also extremely comfortable for the baby, almost like a little reclining chair with a seat cushion. Snug as a bug. My six-week-old son falls fast asleep in the Ergo and sleeps soundly for hours, and I enjoy the close contact with him. The Ergo + insert combo couldn't be more comfortable and secure to wear, and I can get into and out of it myself.

One drawback (and I consider it significant) is that having a separate insert makes it very difficult to change a diaper when away from home. You first have to take the baby + insert out of the Ergo, then find some place to put the insert while changing the diaper (I balance it between my knees so it doesn't fall to the floor) and then get the whole production together again while in a cramped, dirty bathroom. There is the option of putting baby back in the insert by resting the insert on the changing table, but this isn't very sanitary.

The same dilemma occurs when trying to feed the baby, as this involves taking baby out and repositioning him. Same problem when baby simply gets fussy and needs to get out of the carrier for a while. In each case, you're stuck holding the insert with one hand or finding some place to put it down.

I would prefer it if Ergo would find a way to Velcro the insert into the carrier, once it's properly positioned, so that you could just take out the baby without having to take out the insert and find some place to put it.
