When we started the transition from bottle to cup, this was my first choice since we loved Dr. Brown bottles so much- or rather my daughter did. Sadly the cup did not come close to my expectations after the bottles. A nice perk about the cups, less parts (thank goodness after months of all those bottles and numerous parts with tons of spaces to clean/check/scrub). That said we had an awful time with our daughter getting any liquid out of these. We tried tightening, we tried removing the removable handle, we removed the inside insert thinking we'd misunderstood the intent of the piece and still my daughter was not satisfied. With my son we were lucky to have stumbled upon Gerber convertible trainer cups however they were discontinued and replaced by something far less equivalent- still, all in all that was pre the BPA scare. Joining that bandwagon I opted to not use them on my daughter. And it may be worth acknowledging that it is possible we just did not know how to correctly operate these cups- but in my book if we're the parents and adults and we cannot figure it out, perhaps these aren't the cups for us!
So what was our solution to the cup issue- well not this cup. Ironically enough we found the cups that worked best for her were made by Gerber and basically the verse that succeeded our all time favorite cup. We settled (maybe not best choice but it felt that way considering how much I liked my son's cups previously) on insulated cups with a soft spout and then moved up the Gerber Graduates cups still similar overall, only larger in size and minus the handles.
If interested, here's my take on the Gerber cups: The best perk of the Gerber is their leak-proof pieces/inserts are interchangeable with most Gerber cups and you can buy replacements when you have the occasional "my disposal just ate the insert" fiasco or "I'm certain I put that piece in the dishwasher but now I it's not here" incident rather than tossing the cup altogether or purchasing yet another cup- a huge plus for any parent in my book. Other perks include the soft spout for the teethers out there, array of options/colors available, and availability- most stores sell these. Plus they're dishwasher safe and do not require a special scrub wand to clean all their 900 parts! Only cons I have with this cup would be present with most cups I suspect and they include: the designs on the cups do not hold up to repeated dishwashing/sanitizing, a good toss by your toddler and you risk the insert popping off and liquid ending up anywhere but in the cup, and after some time they tend to absorb bright [juice] colors (grape, cranberry, pomegranate, V8 splash)- in particular the lead guards and I feel obligated to do a thorough bleaching or occasionally replacing altogether. Still I think these are things you'll encounter with most cups and considering the wear cups get in my house and the fact that we have hardwood in areas drinks/cups are allowed by the kids, I'm a fan and would recommend them. And honestly, had I not used the previous version I would be sold 99% sold on these.
