Baby Products Reviews of Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding SetCustomer Review: works but know that... Summary: 4 Stars
These bottles do work to reduce digestive issues, at least with my child they worked fine and from the other reviews sounds like...
But they are tricky little suckers because you have to make sure the tube inside isnt all filled with the food or else they don't work right. And when you go to unscrew the lid to make the food go out of the tube in the middle, the bottle will leak all over your hands. This has happened to me a number of times, and its a pain.
There are alot of little parts, but as long as I made sure they were clean when I needed them, okay.
Also the lids that cover the nipple for travelling leak if they are tipped at all. Maybe this is normal, for me its kind of a pain. The nipple flow has been perfect except that they get plugged up all the time (is that normal?) and so my kid will suck and suck and I always have to check the nipple.
I have had no problems with collapsed nipples and haven't needed to use the little cleaner they come with and I do inspect the plastic thing to make sure its clean.
A big bonus for me was that the bottles screw on to the Medela pumps.
They do reduce gas but the tube in the middle will fill with food sometimes when heated and will overflow sometimes, dripping food all over the bottle (read: sticky mess) or sometimes the tube will fill with food and I dont even know why, again, causing leaking and a mess.
But they do do what they say they do, just read all the little instructions to use them right...
I usually expect some drawbacks when products like this come along and just want people to know what those drawbacks are...
Customer Review: I Like Going With This Flow Summary: 5 Stars
When our first child was born (she's six now), we had no idea as to what type of bottle to use. Many friends and relatives suggested the highly popular Avent bottles. Based on a few of the reviews here, it looks as if Avent is still pretty popular. However, we had numerous problems with our daughter while she used the Avent brand. She had terrible gas, was difficult to burp, and spit up fairly regularly. When our new son came along, we were given a set of Dr. Brown's Natural Flow bottles as a gift. I was skeptical at first, especially since there were so many parts to clean. However, our son has had absolutely no problems with these bottles. He burps easily, and we've had no flow problems or collapsing nipple problems as others have mentioned.
The bottles are excellent. I don't recommend using a dishwasher to clean these bottles. I've found that handwashing, though a bit tedious, is better. Let's be honest, it's tough to clean EVERY bit of these bottles without using the handy brush that comes with them. As for folks who claim it takes too long to clean them when the baby is hungry, I'd suggest washing the bottles before you run out. I usually wait until my son is down to one bottle and then I wash all of the rest of them. That way I am not always rushing to clean a bottle. As far as the leaking problem that some have mentioned, I only noticed leaks whenever I or my wife didn't have the top firmly on the bottle.
I highly recommend these bottles. In a "rush hour" world they might seem tedious when it comes to cleaning, but it's worth it if it makes my child's life a little easier.
Customer Review: The only bottle my daughters would take! Summary: 4 Stars
I am a breastfeeding mom and I had a hard time to get either one of my daughters to take a bottle. I tried EVERY bottle out there, and Dr. Brown's bottles seem to be the ONLY bottles my daughters would accept. This may be due to the fact that Dr. Brown's nipples do not collapse when the babies suck, the nipple is perfect shape and size, the flow is consistent and the unique design eliminates the air bubbles, so there's definitely less gas than we experienced while trying other bottles.
I took away one of the stars because of the minor problems we had with this set: these bottles require more time and effort to clean, they leak occasionally [no, I didn't fill them above the line and no, I did not overtighten them - have no idea why they leaked], the larger bottles do not fit in most of the insulated bottle totes that come with diaper bags or sold exclusively for baby bottles [and that was a little bit of a problem for us, because we only use bottles when going places, but we solved it by using a larger/taller insulated lunch bag from Ikea store] and the 4-oz bottles that come in this set will be outgrown pretty quickly. My younger daughter is 7 weeks old and she eats 4 oz per feeding and looks like she could eat more if only the bottle would hold more...
I would recommend getting a set of 3 9-oz Dr. Brown's bottles as it looks like a better value and will serve you longer (you can pour as little milk or formula in a 9 oz bottle as you need, while 4 oz bottles will only hold 4 oz max, and will be useless in a couple of months at the latest).
Customer Review: I don't recommend this bottle Summary: 1 Stars
We got these bottles to try and replace the Playtex Drop-ins we've been using for the last nine months. We figured the Dr.Brown's bottles would cut some cost in having to buy drop-in's all the time for the Playtex bottles.
The design of Dr.Brown's bottles are quite ingenious. As the milk flows, air is automatically directed to the other end of the bottle by a tube. With a regular bottle and nipple system, the milk flow would stop if you tip the bottle because air pressure keeps the milk from flowing out. But with the Dr.Brown bottles, with every drop of milk flowing out, it automatically 'gulps' in air and directs it to the other end of the bottle. So the milk flows on it's own, like a tap.
That last part is where we had a problem. The milk flows non-stop if you tip the bottle; whether the baby wants to feed or not. If you tip the bottle, the milk starts flowing immediately. Our son likes to take breaks while feeding, without taking the bottle out of his mouth. This is much easier with the Playtex drop-in's. The drop-in's work just as well to reduce air intake and prevent colic; the drop-in bags collapse while the baby drinks. Cleaning is also more complicated with Dr.Brown's bottles; more parts to dismantle, many tiny holes and crevices to clean. It's nice that the set came with 3 cleaning brushes, but we saw that as a bad omen ;-)
In my wife's and my opinion, Dr.Brown's bottles just cannot compare to the simplicity and usefullness of the Playtex drop-ins. We're going to stick with the Playtex drop-ins
Customer Review: Highly Recomened with some warning Summary: 4 Stars
Let me first say that some times when I read reviews I'm skeptical and wonder if they are true reviews. However, there isn't one thing on this review that isn't the truth. I bought these bottles over a year ago when a friend of mine had told me they work great for colic-gas or just a fussy baby. I didn't think there was anyway a bottle could do such a thing especially since I've already spent so much money on these different bottles I was beginning to think I should own stock in them. She gave me one that she hadn't used yet and I tried it and I'm here to tell you my colicky baby was less colicky and less fussy and had less gas. I'm not saying these bottles were his complete cure, but they reduced it quite a bit.
The reason I give this review a 4 instead of a 5 is this. I've had these bottles like I said over a year. I could never prevent leaks. Like if you have the pieces put together right it should never leak out of the nipple. Well, I'm not one of those perfect people that could make that happen I tried so hard to put the pieces together right and it just didn't work, but it was only when the bottle was layed down on something or when my son turned it up side down it leaked. Another down fall of it after you've used the bottles regularly the yellow top straw piece begins to wear out and break. Other than that it's a great bottle and if I had another child I would purchase these again.
