Customer Review: A little more maintenance, but better for baby...
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, I'm sure you have read all the comments about "extra cleaning time". Trust me -- running the little brush through the vent and the tube takes an extra 3 seconds per bottle (yes, I counted), so do not let that scare you off using these bottles.

The second most common complaint is leaking. We also had some leaks at the beginning, but there are 3 things you can do to prevent leaks (and yes -- prevent, not just reduce leaking; I have a "leak free" feeding history now that I follow these rules):

1. If you are re-heating the bottle, unscrew the collar a little to let the hot air escape. If trapped in the bottle, the expanding hot air will force milk/formula up into the vent tube and you will have a leak. We use the Night & Day Bottle Warmer, and I had leaks after warming the bottle until I figured out the problem.

2. Do not shake the bottle if you are preparing powdered formula or have reheated the bottle. Swirl the bottle or stir the formula (pop a few PLASTIC spoons in your sterilizer - microwaves don't like metal!), or shake it without the vent and tube in place. Shaking also forces liquid up into the vent.

3. MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure the tip of the vent tube is clear of liquid when feeding the baby. Sounds obvious, but when you're focusing on your little guy/gal, you don't always pay attention to the bottle angle. If the tip of the tube is covered in formula or just barely above the surface, liquid will slop down the tube and leak out the vents under the nipple collar.

We have been using the small 4oz bottles for our newborn son (now 3 weeks old), and he has very little burping and spitting up compared to nieces and nephews I have fed using other bottle brands. The Level 1 nipple flow seems to be fine, but there is also a Newborn nipple if your baby likes to feed more slowly.

The biggest challenge with these bottles have been sterilizing all the parts. We have a microwave sterilizer (which works fine once you figure out where all the parts go). However, we switched to the Philips Avent iQ24 Sterilizer, because it holds 6 of the 4oz bottles and all the parts (bottles, vent tubes, and 3 caps on the bottom, collars and beige vents in the middle basket, and nipples and 3 caps plus the assembly tongs in the top basket). I don't know how well all the parts and larger 8oz bottles will fit (or how many), but the convenience is there -- you can set a 24 hour sterilization cycle and leave it on overnight.

All in all, we're very satisfied with these bottles, and would definitely recommend them.

Customer Review: A godsend!

So, before I begin my review of this product, here's our background... our son who is currently 6 weeks has had to be sent to the hospital with gas pains so severe that the emergency room doctors were concerned that he might be trying to pass a kidney stone. Turns out he was allergic to soy, we had tried breast, standard formula and lactose intolerance formula. He had a negative reaction to all (including breast believe it or not, I went through tests also to determine what was in my milk even though I was on a mild diet.... cause was deemed later on to be for a substance need, our baby needed rice formula). So..... we tried just the rice formula with the children's mylicon with the VentAire bottles.... somewhat of an improvement, but our child was still needing to go to the doctor weekly for checkups without much success, our pediatrician would even call us daily to see how he was doing. Constipation was questioned, but was never an issue. Our breakthrough occurred when we took our son to a specialist appointment and the lady asking us if our son had excess gas since she noticed that Mylicon was listed as one of his meds. I stated quickly yes and told her of our ordeal. I was told that she was the grandmother of 5 children and a mother of 3 and had tried EVERYTHING to cure their extreme colic. The remedy they found, Hyland's colic tablets, Dr. Brown's bottles, and rice formula. After the doctor appointment I went to the store to give these products a try....... and it was like an angel had spoken to us. Our child could breathe again and was longer tense in the body, as he was making progress against constantly trying to push. I know that I'm being candid but I am hoping that this will help other parents and children that have been or will be in our situation. We are on day 4 of the product switch and WOW, he's a brand new baby! If these products can help a child who's been hospitalized, hopefully these can help yours as well. Pedialyte also works as well to help calm the tummy. I've been using tylenol every 5 hours (excluding when he sleeps) for the first week and have been continuing to use the Mylicon to help with the surface gas. Burping has never been an issue, but his burps and toots have become louder and more productive, sometimes just shifting him in our arms can help him to expel gas! I'll be making this post in numerous areas in hopes to help people.

Hyland's colic tablets, Dr. Brown bottles, Enfamil AR Lipil, infant's tylenol, gas drops is literally our formula to success.

Customer Review: I LOVE THESE!
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, I've never experienced a colicky baby before (until recently) but my daughter was happy using these. For the first week, I was mixing 1/2 breast/formula. I never had any problems cleaning these bottles. However, switching to breast full time and sometimes bottling to feed while out in public, I notice the nipples do get "filmy". I tried just about everything to get them clean but, still kind of cloudiness to them. Then yesterday, I broke down and bought the Dr. Brown bottle cleaner! OMG! LOVE IT! I simply put the nipples in a pot with a tiny squirt of dish soap and boiled them a bit, took them out and used the nipple cleaner on them...they are all sparkly and clean (like NEW!). I just bought some Level 2's yesterday as she is now 5 months old and we are still bottling her milk and giving to her along with sippy cups filled with water. The hubby doesn't want her to use sippy for milk...? Don't ask me, that's another "issue"! But, she loves her Dr. Browns. Oh, and I tried to fake her out with her "emergency AVENT bottle" kit in the car....uh...screaming was not something I expected. The look she gave me was "What the heck is WRONG with this bottle and why does the milk taste FUNK? Are you mad at me mommy?". My g/f who was with me laughed her butt off, she thought my daughter was brilliant! Me? I suffered the screaming until we got home to get her REGULAR bottle. *am noting to toss the avents as I type this*

Recently, my same g/f brought over her neighbors screaming colicky baby (which the neighbor brought over crying that she just needed alone time). I snuggled him up and brought him to my co-sleeper and turned EVERYTHING off...gave him the Dr. Brown bottle and he slept for over 1 1/2 hours. My g/f bought her neighbor a set and told her what I did. From what I hear, the baby is doing much better and the mother is now getting some sleep and definitely quiet.

This is my first baby and if I do ever have another one, I will definitely use this product again, and again and again! As for the "plastic causing cancer"...my Dr. is one of the originators of one of the top Pediatrics offices and if he swears by these bottles, I'm sold. Also, from what I have heard, giving breast milk to your babies reduces the chances of cancers in their futures. It's the best and my daughter deserves nothing BUT the BEST.

Customer Review: Great bottles for preemies!
Summary: 5 Stars

My son was born 5 weeks early, and weighed in at a whopping 4 lbs, 6 oz. Because his digestive system was still immature, he was extremely difficult to burp, which caused MAJOR gas issues. After going through 2 bottles of Mylicon in the first 2 weeks after he was born, I decided to give these bottles a try. Wow! I saw a difference after the first feeding. I went to burp my son, expecting to spend my usual 15-20 minutes trying to get him to burp, and imagine my surprise after two minutes this HUGE burp came out of this tiny baby! And an hour later, he was happy as a clam, where in the past, he would have his legs pulled up to his chest, in pain from gas.

I don't understand what the problem is that people have with cleaning the bottles. So they come with two extra parts...big deal. I hand-wash my bottles, and sterilize them in the dishwasher about once a week, and after the first few washes, the extra parts were a non-issue. I also can't figure out how people can't seem to get the beige vent or the tube clean. Unless you let your bottles sit for days until the forumla gets caked on, a simple soaking in hot water and dish detergent before using the special brush should be all that is needed to keep the vent and the tube clean. If that doesn't work, then you can always boil the pieces for about a minute to sterilize them, without the pieces becoming distorted. I also shake the vents and tubes out after washing to dislodge any water that might be remaining inside the holes. Also, if necessary, I have seen in the Babies R Us store that they sell a 2-pack of vents, as well as a 2-pack of tubes in case the need for new ones arises.

My only complaint is that the bottles do leak if they fall on their side for a period of time, so that can be a little tricky when traveling in the diaper bag. I solved that problem by pre-measuring water and putting it into one of my Medela breast pump bottles (which come with lids). Then, while I'm out, I just add formula to the breast pump bottle and shake, then I pour the formula into the empty Dr. Brown's bottle. Problem solved!

I would definitely recommend these bottles to anyone who has a newborn that has serious burping and gas issues!

Customer Review: They really work!
Summary: 5 Stars

I feel a little silly writing a long review on a baby bottle, but I had to write a review about these. We bought most bottles out there for our son - you try to match the nipple shape to the mom if you are breastfeeding. Most bottles claim they help prevent "colic." Most don't, actually. Bottles are a relatively simple thing and they can only really work to prevent colic in a few ways - mechanical or engineered. Bottles fall into a few types - Playtex with liner type, regular old bottles (Gerber, Avent) and Dr. Brown's. The idea to prevent colic is to keep air from getting in the bottle. As baby feeds, the vacuum created in the bottle draws in air through the nipple as is evidence from the bubbles rising up. If baby ingests these bubbles (which they will if they drink the entire bottle) it can tend to cause gas. Bottles like Avent and Gerber do not prevent this problem (the anti-colic is from the latch on to the nipple not in bottle design - a dubious claim in my opinion as I watched bubbles rise up into the pumped milk. The Playtex bottles do but the liners are disposable (and costly over the long run) and those silly vent disk thingys did not work for us. The liners, however, do work as they collapse down as baby sucks and do not seem to allow air back in.

Dr. Brown's bottles, on the other hand, worked exactly as advertised. There are no disposable parts - you just wash everything. They use two extra pieces - a wagon-wheel shaped special vent and a long tube that fits on the vent. The collar that holds the nipple is designed to allow air to flow in from outside, through the wagon-wheel disk and out the tube into the bottle behind all the liquid. This breaks the vacuum and no air gets into the liquid. The system works, and it works very, very well. The bottles come with a small brush as you need to clean out the small tubes in the disk and tube, but it really is not a big deal at all when you are doing dishes by hand (honest). The bottles have never leaked at all and have held up as well as is expected. These bottles are available in narrow and wide - we use the wide because it looks most like Mom. Highly recommended - 5 stars without any reservations.
