Baby Products Reviews of Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Glass Bottle 2-Pack, 3.5 ozCustomer Review: Good bottles, inaccurate scale Summary: 3 Stars
These bottles are similar to all of Dr. Brown's, which is a good design. The glass is sturdy and a great alternative to plastic.
That said, I find it somewhat distressing that the measuring scale is off. I used a chemist's calibrated graduated cylinder to check the accuracy after I noticed some differences compared to the plastic models. While the milliliter scale is pretty accurate, the ounces are off. It's clear even looking at the printed scale that something is wrong. Here are the actual conversion factors from ounces to milliliters (approximately):
1 oz. = 29.6 mL
2 oz. = 59.1 mL
3 oz. = 88.7 mL
However, when you actually look at the bottle scales, they read about:
1 oz. = 31.5 mL
2 oz. = 60 mL
3 oz. = 91 mL
So, basically the problem is that the ounce scale is "compressed" too much, leading to an error of 0 to 3 mL, depending on the amount. It's an obvious error when you look at how the scales line up. That may seem insignificant, but over a couple days, that can add up to a collective error of an ounce or more. For older babies, that's probably not an issue, but for preemies or newborns in the first few weeks, that amount of accuracy can matter if you want to know how much your baby is eating.
The good news is that the ounce scale does seem to accurately line up to the mL scale around the 2 oz. mark, which is the most common measurement for mixing powdered formula. But if you're using measurements outside this range and care about accuracy, you may want to read the mL scale (which appears to be accurate) instead of the oz. scale.
It's rather distressing that the quality control of Dr. Brown's is poor enough to imprint obviously inaccurate measurement scales on their bottles. You'd think they would do basic calibration and quality control. (I should note that the 4 oz. plastic bottles appear to have accurate scales and don't suffer from this problem, for whatever reason.)
Customer Review: Great bottles Summary: 5 Stars
These were recommended to us and now I'm passing it on!
- love the fact that they're glass...don't have to worry about the effects of plastic, etc.
- my exclusively breastfed 6wk old baby has no trouble switching between these bottles and the breast
- we've been very lucky and have avoided the colic phase...but we just recently started using these bottles, so I think the real reason behind that is that I eat almost no dairy products (babies often can't process the milk proteins, thus making their tummies hurt...plus research has shown an association of dairy products with diabetes, allergies, etc. Off topic, I know, but I'm a doctor and had to throw that in there!) Anyway, our baby has no problem with gas/burping when using these bottles.
- cleaning them is an extra step due to the ventilation system, but if it helps my baby avoid tummy troubles, so worth it! Comes with a little brush to clean the ventilation system.
- perfect size
- reasonable price (usually around $12.99 for two bottles)
Customer Review: We like them Summary: 4 Stars
I'm nursing my first child and we use Dr. Brown's glass bottles when I can't be there for her. Because this is my first child and we started off with Dr. Brown's, I have nothing to compare these to but they were recommended by the home health nurse that visited us after my daughter was born and we think they're fine. I like using glass with her rather than plastic for health reasons and there were only two brands to choose from when we went shopping. She is a gassy baby, but I can't blame the bottles for that since she is mostly breastfed. The only negative I can mention is that there is a piece of the venting system that is somewhat difficult to keep clean - we have to be extra vigilant about scrubbing in hard-to-reach places, but Dr. Brown's does include a tiny brush for this purpose.
There must have been a typo in the price which inspired many negative reviews of this bottle, which everyone seems to like. Looks like it has been fixed now, but they are still cheaper at my local Babies R Us.
Customer Review: not for breast feeders Summary: 1 Stars
The bottles themselves are fine, although I did not feel as though the colic straw thing did anything.
The nipples, even the slowest flow, still let too much milk out too fast and choke my son who is used to breast feeding. The nipples are also too small for what he is used to and so he sucks in a lot of air, and thus colic ensues.
I have had better luck with Avent which has much bigger nipples and a much slower flow. Wish I could find them in glass :(
By the way, a vacuum in the bottle is good for breast feeders, it means that when they are not applying pressure, they aren't getting milk, so they can take a break which is what most breast feeders are used to.
Customer Review: We love these bottles! Summary: 5 Stars
My 4 1/2 month old son loves these bottles - as do I. It's the perfect ounce size and the bottle, though glass, is very lightweight. They are very easy to clean, but takes more time because of the parts and pieces. We decided to go with glass because it's so much better for babies. I just don't trust plastic baby bottles and will not resort to it unless I have to. We have 6 of these in rotation and are thinking of getting more. I will use these for baby #2 as well.
My son has only spit up twice in his life (in the very beginning) and has never had colic. Great bottles!
