Baby Products Reviews of Dr. Brown's 4 oz Natural Flow Baby Bottle, 3 Pack

Customer Review: Finally! A bottle that works after trying EVERYTHING else.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have tried everything on the market - no kidding. My son is ten weeks old. We found it hard to find a bottle that was 'just right'. I first spent a fortune on Avent bottles (sterilizer and other accessories, too), buying various sized nipples and bottles, including the disposable model. The nipples are just way TOO HARD for a baby to suck on, especially younger ones. Even the new 'softer nipples' are really hard and just to firm for babies to suck on without a major effort. He would scream for three hours after each feeding and spit up everything he managed to eat. He choked frequently, despite the smallest sized nipple opening. They leaked on occasion if the ring was overtighted. It helps to wet the nipple and ring before assembling which may be hard to do when traveling.

We then tried Gerber bottles which are similar to what hospitals use, but he was very gassy afterwards. This became a problem since the gas also caused him to spit up some - never as much as the Avent though.

Next we tried the Playtex nursers which were the best we'd found so far at that point. The latex nipples cannot be sterilized, which I found out after the holes in the nipples expanded and an excessive amount of milk produced feeding disasters. I tried the silicone ones, but they were not as soft and pliable. He also had a bit of a hard time adapting to these bigger, widder nipples, a more natural breast-like shape. Since he had never been breast fed, this was a challenge for him.

I then tried the Doctor Brown bottles. So far, this has been the best system I've found. Money was not an object so long as I could feed him successfully. The extra parts are somewhat time consuming to wash, but not really a big deal. We were spending more time cleaning spit up and doing additional laundry with the other bottles, so in the end, it's not a big deal - not to mention trying to comfort a screaming baby for hours on end.

I purchased the 4oz and 8oz slim bottles as well as the 9oz wide mouth model. I noticed that the Dr. Brown nipples have larger holes compared to the other models and he was getting way to much milk which would cause him to spit up from time to time. I then found that Dr. Brown also makes Premie sized nipples so I purchased these and used them instead of the size 2 nipple which is what the manufacturer recommends for a baby his age. This solved the problem instantly! The Premie size nipple flow is equivalent to the Playtex Slow Flow nipples. I am saving the size 1 and 2 for when he gets older.

I love the ergonomic design of the wide mouth Dr. Brown bottles, however they don't make Premie nipples for this particular bottle. I do use it, however for night time feedings when I add a small amount of cereal to my son's milk. The size 1 flow works great for this (this is the size that follows the Premie size and what is included with all the Dr. Brown bottles sold).

Mixing the formula took a bit of practice. I first pour the water and then add the formula. I keep an iced-tea spoon nearby, which is a smaller sized spoon with a longer handle used for mixing iced tea in tall glasses. This fits perfectly into the bottle. I stir it quickly but carefully since you don't want any excess bubbles. I found the formula tends to stick to the bottom of the bottle and sides so I make sure to check for clumps before I feed him. Swirling the milk in the bottle also does the trick for smaller amounts.

We are all VERY happy with the Dr. Brown bottles. Having tried just about everything on the market and spending a significant amount of money, I highly recommend these.

Customer Review: Excellent bottles...no problems with them.
Summary: 5 Stars

It might take you awhile to figure out how to take apart and put together the bottle but it works great! My son hardly spits up from it (only from over eating). I have no problem with it leaking as long as the top is twisted on correctly. I highly recommend them.

Customer Review: The LEAK is EASY to fix!
Summary: 5 Stars

We got these bottles like most of the people on here, because our son was very gassy and miserable. Since using these, he's been a much happier baby (it didn't solve the problem completely, but it reduced the problem noticably). He seems to dribble less too. We wish we would have started with these bottles instead of buying all sorts of others to begin with that we now won't use. Save your money and just get these first. Actually, we use the other bottles to shake the formula in then put it in these bottles.

Leaky? Here's the solution!
Some reviewers have mentioned the bottles leaking. We experienced the same problem, but the fix is simple; it's not a problem with filling over the line (we do that sometimes and it doesn't matter). The issue is with the tubing... I'll bet the people who complain about leakage are warming the foruma in something with the lid locked tight (cause that's what we do and we experienced this issue). Having the bottle in warm/hot water like this with the lid on tight wil cause the formula to rise up in the tubing and leak. The solution is simple: when heating this way, just loosen the lid completely while warming and tighten it again right before feeding. No more leaking!

And we don't find the extra pieces that much harder to wash. I mean, what's a couple of extra seconds compared to HOW much time you save trying to console a gassy unhappy baby?

Customer Review: Too much to wash and too often and Very Leaky!
Summary: 2 Stars

First, I would like to mention that these bottles are extremely leaky, I've had them for two months now and the bottles are usually always with a ring of milk underneth them after they've been used & these bottles also leak while they are in the bottle warmer and I have to be cleaning it all the time and all the parts from the bottle seem like they are alway soaking and need to be washed, who has time for this?
As far as gas and colic is concerned, which my baby suffers from, I see no difference between Dr Brown's and Avent. I have been using Avent for a few weeks now and I even think my baby has less gases. The COLIC, by the way, STOPPED immeddiatley after I changed by babie's formula To GOOD START, I think they are the BEST!!!!!

I didn't think these bottles were that great. My child isn't collicky and doesn't have digestive problems so maybe I would rate this item differently if she were. I thought maybe she would burp or spit up less with these bottles compared to regular bottles but she didn't. Plus there are more parts to clean. My husband hated them after the first couple of tries but I wanted to give them a chance. So after a couple of weeks I also gave up on them and use them as regular bottles instead of attaching all the parts. Save your money and get a different brand.
