Baby Products Reviews of Dr. Brown's 4 oz Natural Flow Baby Bottle, 3 PackCustomer Review: The best bottle on the market... Summary: 5 Stars
I was given a Dr. Brown's bottle as a shower gift and am so glad that I got it! (It was different than the ones available online - an 8 oz. wide-mouth bottle)
When I stopped breastfeeding I started using 4 oz. Avent bottles for several reasons. First, because I ended up with 8 of them after purchasing other Avent products and second, because the lactation consultant that taught my breastfeeding class recommended them stating they were more like the breast.
When I started looking at purchasing larger 8 oz. bottles I remembered that I had received a Dr. Brown's bottle and decided to try it to see if my daughter would take it. The wide-mouth nipples look very similar to the Avent ones. My daughter "smacks" a lot when she eats and subsequently takes in a lot of air. She spit up often and would sometimes spit up what looked like half her bottle when she had trouble burping. She took the Dr. Brown's bottle instantly and so I decided to buy a few more and switch for a week or two to see if there was any benefit. I'm so glad that I did!
Once I got past the fact that the bottle looked as big as my daughter's head (the 8 oz. wide-mouth bottles are very large!), I realized that she was burping much more easily and hardly spitting up at all.
I truly believe the benefits of using this bottle outweigh the extra parts you have to clean. After doing some research I discovered that one of the main reasons bottle-fed babies get more ear infections is because of the "vacuum effect" traditional bottles have. As the baby sucks on a traditional bottle they have to gradually suck harder and harder as pressure builds in the bottle. This also creates pressure in their ears which can disturb the fluid balance and cause inner ear problems. The baby also has to frequently break the latch (and the nipple collapses at a certain point of pressure which causes them to unlatch) so that the pressure can equalize in the bottle. This causes them to take in more air. Now, when my daughter is really hungry, she can take practically the whole bottle without ever having to break her latch!
I really like the nipples as well. They are much thinner than the Avent ones and mold better to my baby's mouth. I suppose this is because the Avent ones have to be thicker and stronger to resist collapsing under pressure?
Others have stated that leaking is a problem. They WILL leak only if:
1) you heat them without loosening the top (collar/nipple)
2) you travel with them without putting the disk in the top designed to keep them from leaking
Don't do these things and you shouldn't have any problems.
I definitely recommed you at least try these. I will definitely be purchasing these as shower gifts for new moms! I do recommend the wide-mouth bottles, though.
Customer Review: Definitely Worth IT!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
OK, I was skeptical too - especially (as others have written) that my pediatrician said that the bottles don't make a difference - but YOU know your baby best and I have to say, after the birth of our second baby, I began supplementing with formula using Avant bottles (which I used for our first - who was colicy) and I noticed our baby writhing in pain before getting his burps out (or waking in the middle of his restful periods screaming with gas pain). Naturally, I thought that I was just going to have to deal with the fact that we had another baby with colic - THEN I remembered a friend recommended Dr. Browns. I waited 24 hours to see if they REALLY worked before writing this review and SURE ENOUGH - he is MUCH happier, sleeping more soundly and not once has he pulled his little legs up in pain because of gas. With the Avent bottles, I even had a hard time getting him to burp, with Dr. Brown's, he just seems to have an easier time burping.
RE: Leaks - haven't had the problem at all. RE: Washing - GET OVER IT! If it's better for your baby just take the extra 10 seconds! (Frankly, I was a little concerned about the extra parts and washing too, but it's really NOT a big deal). Finally, just one bit of advice that another mommy friend gave me - DON'T HEAT UP THE BOTTLES - and by that, I mean don't heat whatever you're putting in the bottle...it will make your life so much easier to get your baby used to eating something that is room temp (I use room temp bottled water to make formula and feed it straight away) - that way, it reduces a step (makes up for the extra washing) and if you're in a pinch out somewhere you don't have to stress about how to heat your bottles. My 4 week old, in fact, will take a bottle straight out of the fridge (and I am still nursing) so he goes back and forth between warm breast and cold/room temp bottle with no problem. I understand that all babies are different and some babies are just more particular, but if he/she will take it, opt not to heat up (especially given some warnings of late of wierd chemicals leaking from plastics into food stuff upon heating).
I would also recommend not buying the 4oz - go for the 8oz (they outgrow 4oz too quickly) and for those who say these bottles are too expensive, they really aren't that much more...and espeically given the SANITY that you will regain, they are worth every cent!! I'm sorry for those that didn't have luck with this product, but it's worth a shot if you are feeling desperate (or if you're a new parent wondering what product to start with). I only wish someone had encouraged me to try this with our first - it might have saved a lot of tears (on my part and my baby's)!!!
Customer Review: OK, I gave this product one more chance... Summary: 3 Stars
I originally gave the Dr. Brown's bottles 1 star, because my baby was spitting up very badly every time I fed her with them. However, I gave them another chance, and here is my opinion for new moms out there:--Wait until your baby is 4 to 6 weeks old before trying these bottles. My baby is 5 weeks old now, and she's been doing a lot better with these, probably because her tummy is better developed now and can take the faster flow. I recommend that newborns don't use these, since they really do cause bad reflux with some babies. --The Stage 1 nipple is way too fast, so I bought a package of the EvenFlo Stage 1 nipples to use with the bottles, and this has worked out wonderfully! I had been using the Playtex Vent Aire bottles before, but those nipples are soooooo slow that it was taking my baby 45 minutes to take 3 oz. Now with the Dr. Brown's and the EvenFlo Stage 1 nipple, I can feed her 3 oz. in about 10 or 15 minutes, which is a lifesaver at 2:00 a.m.! --I bought the Y cut nipples and have started giving my baby a rice cereal/formula bottle before bedtime, which is helping her to go longer at night without feedings (last night we went 6 hours! Woohoo!). It's great that Dr. Brown has the Y cut nipples for cereal feeding, because I was very nervous about taking a regular nipple and trying to cut a slit in it myself, especially since my baby does spit up so easily. All in all, this bottle still does give my baby gas, I don't think there is a bottle out there that won't allow some amount of air into baby's tummy. But I've had an easier time burping her since I started her back on these bottles. I also have not had a problem with them leaking. I did notice that one time they were leaking, so I took it apart and put it back together again, and it quit leaking. I think sometimes the internal parts are a little touchy and you need to make sure you have the nipple ring on TIGHT and that the nipple is pulled up fully through the ring. My only other suggestion is make sure you give your baby a break every ounce with these bottles to burp her, or at least catch her breath. It's easy to let baby suck down all the formula quickly with these, so definitely keep an eye on how much baby is taking and take breaks to burp. This has really helped me to avoid the dreaded spit up problems I was having before.
Customer Review: Great bottles for preemies! Summary: 5 Stars
My son was born 5 weeks early, and weighed in at a whopping 4 lbs, 6 oz. Because his digestive system was still immature, he was extremely difficult to burp, which caused MAJOR gas issues. After going through 2 bottles of Mylicon in the first 2 weeks after he was born, I decided to give these bottles a try. Wow! I saw a difference after the first feeding. I went to burp my son, expecting to spend my usual 15-20 minutes trying to get him to burp, and imagine my surprise after two minutes this HUGE burp came out of this tiny baby! And an hour later, he was happy as a clam, where in the past, he would have his legs pulled up to his chest, in pain from gas.
I don't understand what the problem is that people have with cleaning the bottles. So they come with two extra parts...big deal. I hand-wash my bottles, and sterilize them in the dishwasher about once a week, and after the first few washes, the extra parts were a non-issue. I also can't figure out how people can't seem to get the beige vent or the tube clean. Unless you let your bottles sit for days until the forumla gets caked on, a simple soaking in hot water and dish detergent before using the special brush should be all that is needed to keep the vent and the tube clean. If that doesn't work, then you can always boil the pieces for about a minute to sterilize them, without the pieces becoming distorted. I also shake the vents and tubes out after washing to dislodge any water that might be remaining inside the holes. Also, if necessary, I have seen in the Babies R Us store that they sell a 2-pack of vents, as well as a 2-pack of tubes in case the need for new ones arises.
My only complaint is that the bottles do leak if they fall on their side for a period of time, so that can be a little tricky when traveling in the diaper bag. I solved that problem by pre-measuring water and putting it into one of my Medela breast pump bottles (which come with lids). Then, while I'm out, I just add formula to the breast pump bottle and shake, then I pour the formula into the empty Dr. Brown's bottle. Problem solved!
I would definitely recommend these bottles to anyone who has a newborn that has serious burping and gas issues!
Customer Review: Don't Give Up - Worked Like A Charm on 3rd Day Summary: 5 Stars
These bottles actually work great. In our first few attempts, our baby still seemed fussy (perhaps it was b/c he still had gas/stomache problems left over from other bottles) so we kept trying them and low and behold, he stopped being in pain and was a happy baby again. If you do not get results the first few times, keep using them. Eventually your baby's gas problems from using previous bottles will go away and you will see that these bottles work. I think it was the third day we used them when we finally saw the results. As to the leak problems: Don't travel with them without the disks that come with them. That's why the were included. Another reason they may leak, is that parents are heating the milk in the bottle with the neck screwed on tightly. Simply unscrew and loosen the neck half a turn (to allow some pressure to be released) and it shouldn't leak. Tighten the neck tightly before feeding baby. DON'T Mix formula in this bottle (or any bottle) for that matter. You shouldn't mix formula and feed the baby from the same bottle anyway (no matter what bottle you use) it creates too many gas bubbles that will hurt your baby. As to the inconvenience of washing them: Are you kidding me!?!! After staying up several nights in a row in tears with a baby in pain from gas problems, spending the extra time to wash the little parts is a task I will do happily do if it continues to keep my baby (and me!) from staying up all night. If your baby doesn't really have any painful gas problems, or spit up problems then this bottle may not be for you if you do not like to be incovenienced with the task of washing extra parts (which takes a whole 1 minute extra!). However, if you were like us and in tears from sleepless nights and baby in pain, these bottles are a GOD send. Oh, and by the way, my Baby burps (belches!!) like a champ since being fed with these bottles. Sometimes he doesn't even burp (because he didn't swallow ANY gas) and still goes to bed happy. Thanks Dr. Brown!! My only question is how do I send away for my free bottles!?
