Baby Products Reviews of Dr. Brown's 3-pack 8-ounce Standard BottlesCustomer Review: Baby's Favorite Bottle Summary: 5 Stars
Before giving birth, a friend gave us her "must have's" list for infants. She recommended Dr. Brown's Bottles, so I bought 4 4oz. bottles prior to giving birth. We introduced baby to his first bottle experience when he was 2.5 weeks old. We've been using Dr. Brown's Bottles for almost 1.5 years now and I'd like to share some of my expereiences:
1. Our baby loves his Dr. Brown's bottles.. so much that he started preferring drinking out of the bottle rather than my breasts. (It is wise to hold off bottles until later if you plan to breastfeed.)
2. I express my milk with Medela's electric double pump, and sometimes it is more convenient to use the medela storage bottles directly and just screw on nipples and feed him. I discovered that he has a hard time fighting the flat nipple and he would let out frustrated little cries between sucking because he doesn't know how to release air back into the bottles (spoiled by Dr. Brown's Bottles!). Same thing happened with his avent travel bottles. So regardless of where we go, we have to take Dr. Brown's bottles for him. It does get a little cumbersome for people who like to travel light. :)
3. Because Dr. Brown was mostly my son's only bottles, there's not much comparisons to do due to limited personal experience. However, my friend's baby had a very serious case of spitting up, gas, and numerous feeding problems. She complained about him rejecting all bottles and only want to nurse directly from her all day in 20-30 minutes intervals. I gave her a Dr. Brown's 4oz when the baby was 6 weeks old. he took to it instantly and drank more than 3oz the first time he used it. he had never drank so much at 1 setting AND did not have a major spitup like he usually does. my friend went out and bought a bunch of Dr. Brown's bottle afterwards. It was the only bottle her son would take.
4. As about mechanism.. Dr. Brown's Bottle can leak if the formula/breastmilk is too hot. because of the unique way of venting, when the inside temp is too much higher than the outside, the pressure causes the milk to come out of the vent tube and through the venting holes. so when baby drinks from it, the excess milk coming out from the venting system would really flood. I always make sure the level of milk inside the tube is not higher than the outside milk by unscrewing the nipple and rescrew back. if that doesn't work, like the other reviewer, take out the vent tube and reinsert would work. or cool the bottle slightly by putting it in cold water for 30 sec, and rescrew the nipple on afterwards.
5. About extra parts and types of bottle.. We still have all the original nipples and parts after 1.5 years. I think the only thing you need is different flow speed nipples like level 2, etc., or if you misplaced any parts. everything is durable and well made. I prefer the wideneck, my baby doesn't seem to care either way. wide neck is easier to put formula or pour milk in w/o spill in general.
6. About cleaning.. There are so many little parts and holes and creases to clean.. Our weekends are very hectic, so we usually do not have time to clean it within reasonable time after use. it can get yucky and hard to clean once the milk turns sour. putting all the parts and stuff into dishwasher can be tricky. so what we ended up doing is usually on monday we soak and wash the bottles, then use an 8QT pot with pasta insert, boil all the stuff for about 3 minutes, pull them out by the insert(while still hot/boiling), shake off excess water, and air dry on plastic drying rack. (I have 2 wide 8oz, 2 standard 8oz, 3 wide 4oz, and 1 standard 4oz, they all fit). the trick is not to let the water turn cold while immersing the bottle, it would cause hardwater stain/residue which is even harder to clean and becomes breeding ground for bacteria.
7. About sizes of the Bottle.. Babies grow differently in their feeding needs. our son currently uses 8oz bottles at night, and 4oz by the day. when he has solid meals, he only drinks 4oz to suppliment the meals, but he does get an 8oz bottle before bed at night. (if Dr. Brown's has 9oz or 12 oz bottle, i think we'd get it for his nighttime feeding). sometimes if he didn't have enough to eat during the day, he'd wake up in the middle of the night requesting another 8oz feeding.
Finally, because our son was fed well (try the babywise method!), he has been sleeping through the night since he was 12+ weeks old (8-10hrs, now 12hrs). I think having bottles that he can drink from well without causing discomfort is an important (priceless! consider Dr. Brown's bottles are expensive) element for having a healty and happy baby. So feeding and sleeping go hand in hand, and so does peace and order (and well-rested baby and parents!) in the home.
