We bought this because we needed a rail with a high hinge that sits over the frame of a platform bed. The frame of the bed sits higher than the bottom of the mattress to hold the mattress in place, so a normal bedrail with hinges at the bottom would not be able to fold down at all (obstructed by the frame).
This bedrail is very sturdy and easy to assemble and fold down. It is much sturdier than a Summer brand rail that I bought for my daughter's bed. The gate is also tall enough to use with a pillow top. Our son's mattress is 12" high and the gate more than has enough room to keep him from falling out.
I read a couple of reviews complaining about the rail not folding all the way down. It is because this rail has the high hinge and is designed to not fold down all the way and bump the frame of a bed. If you don't need the high hinge and want a rail to fold all the way down, then you do not need this specific model. Dex makes other rails with a normal hinge at the bottom and folds alll the way donw.

I did a lot of research before getting this safety rail and I'm so glad I chose this one!
We are using it for our 2 1/2 year old daughter who was moving into a big girl bed that is a little high off the ground. It is a captain's bed and I was concerned about finding a good, strong safety rail that would work with her new bed. WE FOUND IT!
We are using a regular mattress, so we have not used the middle bar and we haven't noticed any problems by not having it there. Our daughter feels safe and sleeps comfortably and I sleep comfortably knowing that she IS safe!
Even though this is on a captains bed, which has a little lip that keeps most safety rails with hinges from folding down, this one works perfectly because the hinges are raised just enough to be above that lip. I will upload a picture of this safety rail on our daughter's bed so you can see how well it works for beds like hers.

Our toddler moved from her crib to a twin platform bed. Due to having no box spring we were limited on what kind of safety rail we used. My first purchase was the inflatable tube thingy that is on the edge of the bed with elastic straps. It was really flimsy and the second night in her bed she fell right out despite the fact that the safety rail was there. So I did more research and this bedrail was the only one I found that said it could be used with no box spring.
Well, assembly was super simple. I put it together in about 2 minutes. The item slipped under her mattress and feels super solid. Great construction. One night I went to check on my little girl and she was wedged right up against the thing but still safe and sound in bed. THIS IS THE BEDRAIL YOU NEED. Don't mess with the other stuff, cause you'll eventually have to buy this one anyway. We love it.

I have had this bedrail for exactly six months, and it broke at the plastic join between the rail and the support that goes under the bed. I have had two other bedrails for several years (the Munchkin Safety Deluxe Bed Rail and Summer Infant Sure and Secure Single Bedrail) -took a look at both of them and the joins are metal, not plastic.
As well, the Dex does not have straps that securely grasp the far side of the bed, next to the wall. Both the Munchkin & Summer Infant do, and are much more secure fits. I use them both on platform beds, so am disappointed that the Dex does not work properly. I am also disappointed in Dex customer service, who told me on the phone that they received my warranty request and photos of the broken bedrail via email and would be back to me; one week later, no response.

Overall, I think this is an okay product--relatively simple to assemble, works well with our son's platform bed, simple to use child-safe hinge. However, the rail does not fold down flat against the side of the bed when in the "down" position. When folded down, the rail sticks out at least eight inches from the bottom of the bed. This creates a tripping hazard and makes any bedding stick way out from the side of the bed. I want a rail that folds flat during the day so that I can easily pull up my son's duvet and quilt to make the bed and then pop up the rail at night when he goes to sleep. If you plan to leave the rail in the up position at all times and don't care about being able to make the bed each day, then this product would probably be fine for you, especially if you have a platform bed.
