Customer Review: This vs. Safety First
Summary: 4 Stars

Why this vs. Safety First Bed Rail?
Size - it's all about size. This was the perfect length to cover from my son's current bed's side rail to the edge. The Safety first is great if we need 60+inches...but we didn't. They're both essentially the same product- one is just wider. I also didn't like that the safety first sat ON the mattress instead of under. Just seemed like it would be uncomfortable for my son - he likes to roll to the side/edge of the mattress and curl up.

Also this was 1/2 the price of Safety First.

Instructions - it's literally 8 lines - no photos, and takes some intuitive thinking on getting this thing put together. It took about 10 minutes with trial and error.

Toddler bed - this didn't seem like it was made for a toddler bed b/c the anchor straps were really long and the disc went out further than the edge of the bed. With a little fiddling around and tying the strap to the slats of the bed, it works. I wouldn't recommend this product for a twin size bed - would seem like there's too much of a gap on either sides (lengthwise) for a child to fall off. I would recommend this for a toddler bed - there is just the right amount of coverage to keep a child inside (lengthwise).

Suggestions - I wish that this was taller (in height). It's enough to keep my child in when he's sleeping - but it doesn't deter him from wanting to climb over it when he's awake. Not that we're trying to keep him in - he thinks it's a toy/climbing wall. So he'll try to climb form the outside into his bed, or vice versa.

It's sturdy that I'm not worried about him knocking it over or rolling out (our mattress is a standard size - I would suggest putting in the safety bar - which sits at the same heigh as the mattress. Rather be safe than sorry (our mattress is a few inches shorter than they suggested instructions).

You definitely get a good value for the $$ - there's no point paying $40 for another bed rail if you don't need the length. And it's about the same height (from the mattress as Safety First).

Customer Review: Directions amusing, safe gate
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought 2 of these with the intent of putting them on both sides of a full size bed.
I am female. Because of that, I like to read the directions before starting a project. The first line of the directions state "take a deep breath" Now that should have made me put it all back in the box, but my son's crib was torn down/big boy bed up, so I pressed on.
I have put together German tricycles, cribs, & various other semi-complex baby projects. This I rate a 5 on a 1-10 difficulty scale because I did not find the directions clear & no pictures were included. I initially put it together completely upside down. However, I had both rails complete in under 10 minutes, so it wasn't horrible.
The fit:
He has a standard, non pillow top full.
I did not use the metal bars. I found them a potential head injury issue. I don't think they are needed. I was able to slide both rails under the mattress on my own & pull them secure. However, no matter how hard I pulled (you need to pull a cord through a metal plate) the finished result was a 2-3" gap between mattress & rail. This isn't a problem for my 3 year old. He is huge, but this would be a problem for a small toddler. I can see legs & arms getting wedged in there. I do not see it being a suffocation issue because these are not intended for a baby. The child should be able to roll, & arrange himself in bed before using these.
Overall:
My son loves them. He feels safe in his bed. I am happy. They hold him well. I have found him sleeping full against them. They look washable & sturdy. A good buy because I will hand them down to son #2

Customer Review: Not for small rooms
Summary: 2 Stars

I wish I'd read the reviews about how it does not fold down 90 degrees before purchasing. When down, it sticks out close to 45degs from the bed. I had this set up in my daughter's rather small room with a night stand next to her (twin size) bed, and this nearly abutting the nightstand. (When folded down, it blocks the nightstand drawers.) In fact, it's useless to fold it down... pretty much ever. My daughter can't climb out of bed with it folded down because of the way it protrudes, so she has to go around it anyway. For the same reason, it's an obstruction when making the bed or changing sheets, or even just moving around in the room.

I thought I'd try using it without the strap that runs between the mattress and box spring so that I could remove it quickly, fold it and store it under the bed. But without that strap, it's useless as a bedrail. It shifts under the slightest bit of pressure. I put her down for a nap without the strap and came up when I heard her crying - she had fallen and was trapped between the bedrail and the bed. Never try to use this without the strap.

If you go with this one, you'll be stuck with the rail permanently affixed to the bed. Good luck changing sheets. I found a simple one that I love for $5 at a garage sale that I'm using instead of this. Sometimes simplicity is best.

I give this 2 stars only because it seems sturdy, and I had no issues with construction or quality. Took only a couple minutes to put together. But highly don't recommend.

Customer Review: Great for no boxspring beds!
Summary: 4 Stars

My son has a captain's bed which has a bunkie board instead of a boxspring. The bed is really high up and I was worried as my 3 1/2 year son transitioned from his toddler bed to his "big boy bed." It is sturdy and works with thicker mattresses (like we have). I have no worries as my rambunctios son uses the bedrail to pull himself up onto the bed or bounce around on the bed itself (I wanted it more so he didn't roll off in his sleep). The manufacturer CLEARLY states this device IS NOT to be used as a substitute for a crib (or toddler bed) or for children under the age of 2 or over 6. So this is a device more for keeping a sleeping child from rolling out of bed, not keeping a BABY in bed, or confined to bed. SO please keep this in mind if you are purchasing this for that reason (it's NOT safe, if you need a cheap, or portable solution for your baby try a playpen which you can often buy CHEAP and barely used at a consignment shop).
The assembley instructions are somewhat confusing more pictures would have been helpful. If you read ALL the instructions first it is helpful because there is ONE part that I wasn't sure what part it was referring to until it explained at the END what that part was. I had to look on the outside of the box a lot to see how things fit together. Although that being said, it's pretty dummy proof and hard to screw it up (as long as you don't let the instructions confuse you ha ha ha)!
I like the product and would recommend it!

Customer Review: Safe and Easy to use!
Summary: 5 Stars

We have used this bed rail for over a year with no problems. My son was 20 months when we started using it, he is in a full size bed with a box spring. I do agree that it is difficult to get it together the very first time, but I think that's why it is so safe. Once you get it together the first time, it stays in one piece even if you flip the mattress, etc.

To comment on a few previous reviews, I don't see any sharp edges that could injure a child, there is a metal piece that is covered with fabric that is very tightly pushed against the mattress side...it wouldn't touch the child. And that is one of the safety features, it keeps the child from falling in between the rail and the mattress. The previous poster probably didn't have the strap that goes under the mattress tight enough...that's the only way it wouldn't work that I can tell.

And ours definately folds all the way down at a 90 degree angle to make the bed, that is one of my favorite features. It has two releases that are easy enough for an adult to work but hard enough so a child (even mine) can't. When you bring it back up after making the bed, they snap into place so you know they are set.

Highly recommend and I am buying another one for the other side.
