Baby Products Reviews of Dex Products Safe Sleeper Bed Rail Ultra

Customer Review: fantastic product--sturdy, simple, folds down completely
Summary: 5 Stars

I spend a lot of time looking at and comparing products before I buy one--especially when it comes to baby/toddler safety products. I looked at almost all the other bed rails before purchasing this one, and I'm thrilled with it.

First of all, it's very easy to assemble and install. It took my husband about 5 to 10 minutes to put everything together. He said it was easy. The system used for making sure the bed rail doesn't push out from the side of the bed is a very simple strap system that installs quickly, even with our new heavy, super-plush twin beds. Once installed, the bed rail doesn't budge an inch. Also, the mechanism for folding the bedrail down (completely down!) when you want to make a bed is very easy...just slip the lock to the side, and then use a hand on each side of the bedrail to lift and fold--easy for adults, but not at all obvious for kids. When you're done making the bed, just fold the rail back up and it clicks itself into place.

Second, it looks great. It's clean, crisp white--not some of the other glaring colors I've seen in other bed rails. It's very tall (perfect for the thick mattresses sold these days), and very long. We keep it in the upright position once the bed is made, but it's simple enough to fold that you could keep it folded down and more out of sight when the bed is made.

Third (and maybe this should have been second ;), it's safe. Very safe. We're using it with our two five-year olds, and the height of it is perfect for them. I don't think they could roll or push themselves out of bed if they tried. The frame is very sturdy. It comes with a bar that goes through the middle of the mesh (covered and padded, of course). It's removeable if you want (or if your bed is too thick), but we keep it in because it seems to add even more sturdiness and strength.

I couldn't be happier with this product. All of the others I looked at seemed to be either a mess to install, or they didn't fold down, or they looked awful. This one was great on all three counts!

Customer Review: Durable and simple
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this when our then 18-month old moved to a big bed. She's a crazy sleeper and we wanted to make sure even through her tossing and turning that she'd stay safe in the bed. Now, a year and a half later, it still works and has withstood the abuse from our two kids.

Now that they're big enough, they use it during the day as something to hold while jumping, they climb over it, they roll around against it, and it still stands straight. It has just enough give that you don't have to worry about a face or anything getting squashed up and stuck against it (though the stretchy mesh material would prevent any smothering), but yet it somehow remains standing up and doing its job. I'm really pretty impressed because my daughter sleeps mostly laying against it/leg thrown over it every night, and it hasn't bent out of shape.

The two locks are easy to pull up for changing sheets and what not, but I believe other posters have mentioned that depending on the size of your bed, most likely the rail won't lay flat against the bed when you have it down. We have a normal mattress and box spring on a metal/wheeled frame, but when you have the rail down, it lays at an angle. Not a problem for us because it's rarely down, but maybe something to consider if you'll have it down more often.

I will say it took us a little while to figure out exactly how to get it tightened between the two mattresses at first. Every once in awhile when I move the bed for cleaning if it slides down it takes me awhile to figure it out how to tighten it again. That would be the only con I can really think of.

Otherwise great, strong product.

Customer Review: Beware: Day 2 w/ Rails and She's Already Fallen Out
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought two of these for my three year old, who we were transitioning from her crib to her "big girl" bed. We got one for each side of the bed. They were easy to assemble, looked nice (for bed rails), and were easy to fold down. The only issue for us in assembly and general operation is that they are so tall in height that when we fold them down they do not lie flat against the side of the bed because the height of the rail is taller than the space from the floor to the hinge on the rail.

When we assembled the products, there was an additional metal bar included (you can see it in the picture of the product at the height of the mattress top), which the instructions clearly state is not to be used unless you have an unusally tall mattress. Otherwise, you are told to omit the bar. We do not have an unusually tall mattress (the instructions gave a specific height and we missed it by several inches) so we omitted the bar.

Last night was my daughter's first night sleeping in her bed and all went well. Tonight, however, I heard the frightening thunk of my daughter hitting the hardwood, followed immediately by her cries. It appears she slipped between the upper bar and without the additional bar the mesh was inadequate to hold her on the bed.

Thankfully, she seems fine. I located the metal bars that were supposedly only for the tall mattresses and inserted them immediately because I do not think there would be a way for her to slip out with those installed. Please beware when assembling this product to consider including these rails even if you do not have a tall mattress.

Customer Review: Not for use for toddler age children
Summary: 2 Stars

My son is 2 going to be 3 in April, and since he was born he has slept in our bed and then in the "playpen" bed next to mine. Now that he is going to be 3 I am trying to get him into his own bed in his own room. I bought this rail for that reason. Everything I read about this one made me think it would be perfect for us, with the height and length of the rail. I received it in the mail today and it was extremely easy to instal on his bed, I had it done in about 10 minutes. But thats about where my happiness stops. #1 its so tall on his bed that I might as well put him in a crib, it isnt made where it folds in half so he cant even get in and out of his bed on his own. #2 its very flimsy, if he was to attempt to get out of bed on his own it would collapse on him and he would fall. My husband came into the room to see the rail and he gave it alittle shake and it started to work its way out from under the matteress even with the strap support in place.
The only way this bed rail would work properly is if it was on my king sized bed so that the matteress is heavy enough to hold it in place which completely defeats the purpose of buying the rail in the first place. We havent even used this rail overnight yet and I have already printed out the return label from Amazon to get a refund.
Not at all what we expected in a rail.

Customer Review: Good decent rail, but I think overall it's pretty equal to others I've owned.
Summary: 4 Stars

I've owned two variations of a Safety 1st bedrail that doesn't seem to exist anymore and recently purchased this Dex. Overall the Dex is made well. It's strong, sturdy and the neutral colors are a big improvement over my older bedrails. We use it on a king sized bed and the anchor strap really does fit a king as advertised. I also really like that it is extra tall (though it doesn't fold all the way over into the lowered position because it hits the floor before it gets flat against he bed frame). Even though our mattress is pretty thick, I found I got a more secure fit by removing the mattress protector rail.

The downside compared to my older rails are that it's the kind of thing you install and leave. My Safety 1st rails installed securely without the anchor strap design and came pre-assembled in one piece that could expand and collapse without sacrificing strength. We've even been able to stick it in a standard sized suitcase and take it on a plane. That won't be happening with the Dex. And good luck releasing both hinges at the same time to lower the rail if you have average to short arms. The assembly wouldn't deter me from buying it again, but it's definitely not the easy breezy install of my other models (definitely not as simple as advertised).
