Baby Products Reviews of DEX Products Sound Sleeper SS-01Customer Review: Not loud enough and not soothing Summary: 2 Stars
I was very disappointed with this sound machine and ended up exchanging it for the Marpac sound conditioner for my infant's room and my toddler's room in order to drown out each other's nightly disturbances. The DEX does have a lot of selections, but my husband and I thought only 3 of them were soothing--the white noise, the ocean and the wind. But the volume of the ocean sound was not constant and we thought it might actually wake our baby instead of drowning out household noises. The sound of the gulls, thunderstorm and some of the others were just plain annoying, not soothing at all. We tried combining some of the sounds, as it suggests, but it would just switch turns with two different sounds rather than playing them both simultaneously. Also, it's not loud enough and this is ultimately why we returned it. We are very satisfied with the Marpac, which sounds like a mixture between white noise and a fan blowing.
Customer Review: Great for Preemies Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this product after taking our son home from a 5-week stay in the NICU. The nurses there had placed a sound machine in his bassinet to help mask all of the beeps and buzzes of the nursery. We found that he slept much better once we purchased one for use at home.
The plug-in feature is great! Our baby was in and out of the hospital a lot and we always made sure to bring the machine with us because it provided a little bit of familiarity while at the hospital. We figured out another nice use for the machine when he got a bit older and was sleeping in his own room. I was nervous at first about his baby monitor malfunctioning or shutting off at night. By having the sound machine on in the room, I knew if the monitor was working by being able to listen to what he was listening to. It was very reassuring and I think it helped us sleep too. The heartbeat sound is very calming!
Customer Review: We tote it everywhere--good for newborns AND older babies. Summary: 5 Stars
I consider this one of the essential baby care gadgets, far more essential than a wipe warmer. Many baby experts seem to agree that newborns crave the swooshing sounds of the womb, and that silence, for them, is startling. Our newborn would cease screaming AS SOON AS WE TURNED THE WOMB SOUNDS ON. Other people, observing this, could not believe it, and, though they laughed at us, had to agree that IT WORKED. Now, our son is nearing 6 months of age, but we still use the machine (set on Ocean sounds) in order to drown out other sounds during nap and sleep times. It would be worth the money even if it played only one sound. The fact that it comes with an AC adapter is great, as is the fact that it can be turned on to play continously--other models shut off automatically after a 40 or 60 minute period. The sudden absence of noise wakes some babies up. This one is great.
Customer Review: Buy a CD instead Summary: 3 Stars
Pros: Small, very portable, fairly long battery life, outlet available, several different sounds to choose from, and a fairly reasonable price.
Cons: Sounds level is quite low on most sounds, however the ocean setting gets very loud. My daughter prefers the brook sound and it does not get very loud at all.
I was happy enough with this until we started playing CDs of white noise for our daughter in the car and around the house. They work much better and now I wish we would have just gotten a small CD player to use in her room. I recommend the CD Waterfalls: Sounds of the Earth, it works like magic! I also got For Crying Out Loud and Transitions but they are very hit or miss. The waterfall works 95% of the time in the house or the car, she will calm down and be asleep in seconds, literally. Even when screaming at 100% capacity.
Customer Review: Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
We love it!
Yes, the volume is low, but there's a very simple solution to that -- put it near your head.
The best things about this device are the AC adapter and the fact that it will run all night. I just leave it plugged in and turned on all the time (Our cat must think we live by the ocean now!)
A couple of reviewers said their machines stopped working and would only play for 5 seconds. If this happens to you, turn it over and flip the switch off of DEMO mode -- it has the 5-second setting so you can try it out in the store.
We're hooked on this thing now. I may have to buy another one someday when my son moves into his own room.
***UPDATE***
Ours finally stopped working after 3-and-a-half years of near constant use. Not too shabby for the price. Would buy it again.
