Customer Review: Has Some Flaws

People buy these types of products mainly to assist with sleeping. Recently my HomeMedics sound machine died and I went on Amazon to find another one. I found a plethura of these devices in all price ranges. I finally decided on this product as the price was right, and it had the sounds I wanted.
Overall, it does what it is supposed to do. There are even 4 'mix' tones so that you can have 'Rain' playing, and add in bird sounds, thunder, etc. That's a nice touch.
On the flip side, the unit's volume is too low. Even at the top setting you can still hear ambient noise around you. The other unit I had was so loud on the higher volumes that I never turned it all the way up. This one I put on Max all the time, and even then it's about half the volume of the HomeMedics unit I had.
It's a decent machine, probably more suited to background noise in a less then hectic enviroment, or perhaps for a child. For those that need it to provide a sound zone to sleep in, it is flawed.

The sound sleeper is not going to calm a screaming, upset baby (I've tried), but if your baby is at that point then they should be picked up and held anyway.
I have, however, found it useful on two fronts. First, I use the womb sound at night. Now my baby is conditioned to know that when that sound comes on it is time to go to sleep and that it is night-time. She almost seems relieved when she hears it because she's tired anyway and it gives her the sign that it is ok to node off.
Second, I use the other sounds (birds chirping, etc.) during the day to peak her interest. These sounds don't seem to relax her so I use them to entertain her so I can get things done around the house.
The reason I gave this product a 4 is because the volume should go up a little higher, but that con is offset by the fact that you can use either batteries or plug it into the wall, which is a big money saver. This product deserves a 4.5 rating in my opinion.

I bought this to replace an older model Homedics sound machine which I lost the AC adapter for. This one is much better! The speaker is much clearer and the buttons are better (the old one had a volume dial instead of separate up and down volume buttons, and when you'd move the dial one millimeter it would shoot up in volume and be too loud). I like its size and weight - it'll stay on my slanted art desk no problem. It's hefty enough that if you bump it it won't fall to the floor, and it's small enough that it doesn't take up too much space. It has the options of leaving it on all night or using a 60-minute timer that will shut off after you're asleep. I think it goes up to a very loud sound level - noise machines are supposed to be white noise/background noise so aren't expected to be as loud as a stereo or TV. I like that you can add 2 of the sounds together. I would recommend ocean and gull as the most soothing. This is listed as a baby product but is really for any age!Customer Review: sound sleeper not so great

I bought the sound sleeper because I had been running a humidifier in my girls' room for 3 months so that they would not wake eachother up at night, and also so that my baby could nap in a noisy house without being disturbed. I wanted to replace the humidifier with a noise machine, but did not want to pay an arm and a leg for it. The Sound Sleeper did have a decent variety of sounds, although not the white noise I was hoping for. Using the wind setting that my older daughter said was the only one she liked, I was hoping would give ample background noise for the room. The Sound Sleeper could be turned loud enough but at the maximum volume (which I found necessary), the noise distorted to an extend that I found it extremely distracting just to be able to hear it through my baby monitor. My baby did not sleep well the night that I used it and the next day I went back to the humidifier. The only reason I did not return it was, frankly, laziness. We received this as a gift when our daughter was 1 month old. I had it in the car to take back, because I didn't think she needed it. Then after a fussy day, I decided to pull it out and see if she would calm down. She LOVES it!
It has sounds that you can mix together or you can put it on random. It isn't loud enough to hear if she is screaming, but once she is somewhat calm she can hear it and it soothes her very well. My husband especially likes to go to sleep to the rain and thunder.
Last night I heard my daughter squirming in her bassinet and so I got up and turned it on to the brook sounds and she went back to sleep for another hour.
I also love it because we can plug it in in the nursery or let it run on batteries if we want to bring it into another room. You can put it on timer which will run for 60 minutes or let it run constantly. Its small enough to travel with too.
For this price, its worth a try.
