Baby Products Reviews of DEX Products Sound Sleeper SS-01Customer Review: JUNK ... and it's on You. Summary: 1 Stars
I've been buying from Amazon about ten years now. I've spend a LOAD of $ here. And I've been almost universally pleased with products and service. I'll admit trying to decipher what some guy in Bombay is saying (who speaks 'English', but not 'American') when I already having wornout hearing is no party, but on the debit/credit assessment I can live with it ... even though he and thousands of his friends are taking jobs needed VERY BADLY right here at home. (I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart years ago over that one ... hmmm, maybe I need to reconsider.)
What used to be called 'mail order' buying is critical to me because I'm disabled. Very disabled. CFS/Fibromyalgia/Scoliotic Arthritis and more. Forgive me. I never do this. We've all got troubles. It's just to help you understand why it took me so long to get around to finding out how to return this junk to Amazon. When showering is a challenge, the labor of sending back something they told you would work in the first place is less than inviting. But today I felt good enough to bite the bullet only to find it was me that got bitten.
The cut-off for returning this paperweight was last month (purchased in November). Period. Tough guacamole. Any credit for years of business?
Ho Ho Ho. And questions like, Did it ever do anything but sit there? Not interested. Oooooooook.
Amazon's Plan B was talking to Rajiv in Bombay. I think that's called salt in a wound.
Back in November, to make real sure, I had a friend listen to it. Someone 30 years younger with ears that have plenty of tread left on them.
She said, 'Hmmm. I think I hear something far, far away.' The volume was maxed-out.
OK. I know. I'm not being sporting at all about this. So, I'm disabled and doing anything (if I remember it, first) is exhausting and painful. Life's tough and that's how the cookie crumbles. I guess it's the 'No Exceptions' thing that rubs me raw. And all that business I sent their way. AND a product that wasn't just lame. It was INERT. And something like twenty bucks. ouch.
That's enough opera, I suppose. It's only the lemon YOU get that really makes you pucker.
I just wouldn't buy one if I worked for my money. And you might look at that Return Policy some time. YOU pay the frieght; purchase price is discounted ... by them. Now I'll put the violin away.
Customer Review: Very nice sound machine Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this sound machine when my second daughter was a few months old. For our first daughter I had tried static on the radio (unreliable, was hard to get a station that was all static and never actually became voices/music, and even if I found a good one there was no guarantee that it would *stay* static) and making a CD with a white noise track (there was a "skip" at the end of each track and a longer pause when the CD went to repeat, plus our CD player became unreliable after a while). Finally I broke down and bought this white noise machine. I'm not sure why these cost so much, since they seem like they're so simple, but honestly, they're worth it.
We've been using it for almost 2 years at this point and I'm contemplating buying a new one for our expected baby, so that the toddler can continue to use it. It's great. It plugs into the wall, so you don't have to worry about batteries running out, but it does have a battery option for times when you need that.
Several reviewers have complained that it doesn't go loud enough, but that hasn't been at all our experience. You don't want it so loud that it causes hearing damage (not from being ultra loud but from being on all the time when they're sleeping, so that their ears don't get a chance to rest). I'll admit that it's not going to cover serious loud noises nearby, but at a certain point you would just need something so incredibly loud to do that that it wouldn't be worth it. It provides a very nice cover of noise.
The settings provided some nice variety. I found some, I think "rain," to be a little too high-pitched and irritating to me. "Rain" actually sounds more like static than rain. I use "rain," "brook," and "ocean" the most. "Ocean" is nice because the irregularity of the waves covers other irregular sounds. I'm not sure who would use the seagulls and buoys, but sometimes when my oldest wakes up in the morning she changes it to "the birdies," so they get some use that way.
All in all, a great little machine, and definitely worth it. It's reliable and functions exactly as it should.
Customer Review: Read This Before You Buy Summary: 2 Stars
While I won't tell you what to do in regards to this product, there are a few things to know before you decide if you should purchase it.
Pros -
1. The Dex Sound Sleeper allows you to blend sounds. That's nice if you want to mix the ocean with seagulls or the thunder and rain etc. It gives many more sound options. That's really a great feature.
2. The size is nice. Not too big, not too small.
Cons -
1. It truly DOES NOT get loud enough. I used it in my bedroom for the baby and it wasn't nearly as loud as it needed to be. I had it cranked up as loud as it could go and it still wasn't loud enough...even in our average/below average sized room. I don't want it to be deafening, but it should provide a consistent noise level as to drown out other sounds. It was incapable of doing that.
2. (and perhaps most annoying) Whenever you turn on the sound machine, you will have to reselect your sound AND turn up the volume. For some unknown reason, it defaults to the lowest volume setting of the same sound. Imagine if you turned on your TV and it always went to channel 3 and was on mute. I should not have to reset the machine every time I use it! Why would they program the machine to do that?
3. Some of the sounds aren't great. I used Brook and found that the sound cycle was VERY short, it also had some strange click at the end of the cycle. Also, there was one additional sound in Brook that was so strange I never identified it. The first night it happened, I thought the baby or my husband was breathing funny. Nope, it was some bizarre sound coming from the machine. Rain sounds very mechanical too. Thunder is good though.
Needless to say, mine is being returned. Sorry I can't rec. something better. I have a sound machine that was handed down to me and is over 16 y/o. It still works great and I wish I could get another as the one I have is already being used in the house. Sadly, it is no longer manufactured. It just goes to show you, they really don't make things the way they used to.
Customer Review: After Much Research, A Fantastic Buy!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I am very pleased with this product. My 4-month old has only been taking 20 minute cat-naps and I needed some way to encourage longer sleep during the day. I thought maybe a background noise would help. I did a TON of research and review-reading before making this purchase. I was concerned after reading the reviews about the lack of volume that has been claimed for this product, but have not found this to be an issue at all. The volume levels are not too soft at all. In fact, I often worry about it being too loud. It has a great volume control to fit your needs. We use the ocean sound, and at first I was worried because one wave sound is louder than the rest, but turning the volume down one notch solved this so it wasn't overbearing.
The sounds are fantastic. My husband likes to play with the blending of various sounds. There is no break in the repeat of the noises and you cannot tell when the sound is starting its cycle over again, as I have read on so many other sound sleepers. There is a HUGE variety of sounds as well. I was impressed. It has something that should match anyone's needs.
It's a huge advantage to have the sound sleeper be battery operated or able to plug into a wall. It's been a piece of cake to quickly unplug and use it on battery power when my son has fallen asleep in our bedroom or another location. I love this feature. We live overseas with the military, and when we vacation we can still take it with us to use on the batteries, since we can't use the plugs here without an adapter/transformer.
We love the timer that is on the sound sleeper as well. We usually let it run on "on" until my husband and I go to bed. Then, when I am going into my son's room to check on him for the last time in the evening, I simply flip the button to timer and an hour later it goes off when we're all asleep. Love the timer feature.
Overall, I'd give this product more than 5 stars if the ratings were higher. It was a fantastic purchase for very little spent.
Customer Review: Love the sound sleeper Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using the sound sleeper for a month now and it's great! I didn't purchase this item right when my DD was born because I figured it wasn't a necessary item. After fighting to get her to sleep during the day I didn't know what else to do. Then my husband and I were talking to each other next to her crib debating on how to get her to sleep (she was crying) and after about 5 minutes we realized that she had passed out! A light went off and I realized that all she needed was some background noise because the absolute silence was unnerving for her. To try out my theory I downloaded some rain music (I knew she fell asleep great when it was raining) to put on my iPod and it did the trick. I immediately remembered this being on our registry and purchased it right away. The sound sleeper has been playing ever since! We use the rain/thunder combination but our DD also likes the ocean/thunder too. There are definitely other combinations to choose from, but those work for us. The volume is great and has a great range from quiet to loud. We use ours on the continual on position but you can also put it to go off in 60minutes. I know people have trouble with their babies waking up after the sound goes off so we keep it permanently on and since the sound sleeper plugs in(!!!) you don't have to worry about eating up batteries. The sound sleeper is definitely a must have for out LO. So to recap:
Pros:
1. Volume is great going from quiet to loud.
2. It doesn't interfere with us hearing our DD on the baby monitor.
3. Lots of combinations to choose from.
4. Choice of continual play or turning off after 60min.
5. Plugs in so you don't have to worry about eating up batteries!
Cons:
1. If I have to list at least one, you can hear it on the baby monitor. It sounds like continual static. It doesn't bother me at all but it might be a down side to others.
