Baby Products Reviews of Cloud b Twilight Constellation Night Light, TurtleCustomer Review: Cute, but not well made for the price. Summary: 4 Stars
My daughter got this turtle last year for Christmas, and she loved it right away. However, there are major drawbacks to this item.
The stars do not move or rotate in any way. As opposed to other comparable items on the market, this is one feature that is missing.
The booklet that accompanies the toy does not actually include that much educational material about astronomy; the bulk of it is a made-up story (like a fairy tale) about a magical turtle. So, this really isn't age-appropriate for older children.
Third, the lights are bright when you first get the turtle out of the box, but they dim very quickly. It is important to note that the room must be absolutely pitch black for this item to work! The lights are not bright enough to show if the room is only semi-dark. If there is even so much as a nightlight on in the room, it is difficult to discern the stars.
The blue and green lights are really the only ones that are very visible. The amber function is basically useless; even when the room was black-black, it did not project very good stars.
The name is misleading. The turtle will project star shapes onto the ceiling, but they are actually just big, dim star shapes, not realistic looking astral pinpoints, and my husband, an astronomy nerd, can't find any constellations when they are on the ceiling.
OK-HERE is the BIG drawback. This is made very poorly. It is designed so that if it breaks (and it can break easily), you CANNOT fix it yourself. My daughter was very gentle with this, and it was broken within 3 months of use (by use I mean just sitting on a table and being turned on at night).
Our daughter loved this toy when she got it and used it every night. However, it really should not be called a toy; it should be called a "device," because you cannot play with it. The inner mechanics make it too hard to cuddle with or anything, and if you shake it or drop it, even at a close distance and on carpet, it will break. If you push the buttons very hard at all, they will pop off and fall inside the turtle, and you cannot retrieve them. The fabric part on back of the turtle is actually glued on and cannot come off of the shell, so if the buttons fall off, you can't reconnect them, and once the light source burns out, you can't replace it--you have to buy a new one. Given how delicate it is, it should not be called a toy. There is no point making it look like a cute turtle if it can't be played with at all for fear that it will be instantly broken.
Also, I agree with other reviewers. The ceilings in my daughter's room are only 8 feet high and we still had to place the turtle on a chair to get the stars to show up.
Customer Review: How did we live before this turtle? Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this turtle in utter desperation after my 4 year old developed a fear of the dark. I had tried other night lights and lamps to no avail (too bright, not bright enough) and I was a little hesitant to throw good money after bad on another attempt at getting him to bed. But every night was another battle...
"Mom, can you turn the hall light on? No, that light is too bright, can you turn the bathroom light on?"
"Kyle, get back in bed."
"But I have to pee."
"You're just making excuses...get back in that bed. Why is your light on again?"
"I just turned on the light so I could say goodnight to bear. Can you read me another book? What's that sound?"
"Dishes, Kyle. I'm washing dishes."
"Can I help?"
I do not have enough characters left to finish detailing our nightly conversations but you get the gist.
When I first got turtle, I was immediately concerned. I really thought the light was not going to be bright enough to scare away the wolf that apparently lives under his bed. But, first night, he was ENCHANTED. I put it on the bookshelf next to his bed so it throws the stars right over his head. Admittedly, it is not that bright and one cannot see all the stars while the lamp is so close to the wall, but he does not care in the slightest. He loves it. I would not trade my Jeep for it. Even after a year of ownership, we no longer argue with him over going to bed. Occasionally after the sleep timer activates I will hear shouts of "MOM...CAN YOU TURN MY TURTLE LAMP BACK ON??" when he stays up too late. But other than that, blissful quiet. Take home message is...no, it's not perfect but it gets the job done.
I was also concerned about the lack of an AC adapter as I already spend fully one quarter of my gross income on batteries for toys, but after a year I've only changed the batteries two or three times. Not too bad for a lamp that is used nightly without exception.
Bonus is that on several occasions when we first got turtle, he'd ask me to lay in bed with him and watch the stars turn colors. If I live to be 164 and am struck with dementia (God forbid both of these), I'll never forget how wonderful it was to just lay quietly with him and watch those stars while he fell asleep.
Build a time machine and buy this thing yesterday.
Customer Review: It's so Cute... But faulty Summary: 2 Stars
I was SOOO disappointed when my Turtle broke down only after a week. It did help my kid (age 22 months) sleep at night, he actually looked forward to going to bed, so much so, that he and my other child (3 years) were fighting over who was going to sleep in that room! It really did wonders paired up with the Sleeping Sheep (which I added Essential Oil Lavender to) that makes white noise.
DESCRIPTION: Of course in the beginning, when I took it out of the package, you could definitely tell this little guy is NOT to be played with. I got that, it's very light the body is plush and the shell is plastic similar to thin PVC material. If you stepped on it, it would probably shatter in a thousand sharp pieces. With that thought I NEVER let my kids handle it.
PLACEMENT: I read the directions, which state, it needs to be placed at least 6 ft from the ceiling or less AND in the center of the room, to view the stars correctly. I don't happen to have anything in the middle of the room to set him on so I set him on the dresser and the stars show up nicely in most areas, the outer edges the stars stretch and get blurry because of my improper placement. It is not ALL over his ceiling, but they are on the ceiling and the wall, and he loves it, what more could I ask for?
COLORS: I agree that the Amber lighting isn't very viewable UNLESS it is pitch black. I just don't use Amber lighting, his favorite is blue or green. Blue shows up the best for us.
FUNCTION AND FAILURE: He is adorable for looking at, and I was so upset when (only a week later) he would no longer turn on. I changed the batteries and still nothing worked. I found the the green lighting button stayed depressed and would no longer pop up. I attempted to unscrew his battery pack to see if I could get inside of his shell to "pop" his button back up, but apparently his shell is actually one big hard case and you can't actually get "into" him at all. So that begs the question, what happens when the lights burn out? Hmmm... Well, that won't be a problem for me since he won't work anyway. I think the price is a bit steep for a weeks worth of use... But when he worked... he was wonderful!
Customer Review: My little princess best nighttime companion Summary: 5 Stars
Our little girl knew that the Ladybug was coming because I told her the day I ordered it. We followed her (it's a 'she') progress through the several UPS hubs and, finally, she arrived one cold winter night. I'm not going to talk a lot about her joy but just stating that she loves this little toy would be understating it a little. She has her in bed when she goes to sleep, of course, and she took her to school (kindergarten) to show her to her girlfriends. Of course, she named her.
The Ladybug is about 12-14" in size, very light. She has a hard, red back with black spots back and VERY soft, velvety head and legs. Her back has cuts in the shape of many little stars and a crescent moon - for some reason, this does NOT seem to be weird at all :). When the lights are off and the Ladybug is on, a girl's room becomes a magic place, dozens of stars and the crescent moon projected on the walls and on the the ceiling.
Objectively, these are the features:
- On/off button and 3 color select buttons.
- 3 AAA batteries, included
- Lights can be Red, Green or Blue and these are the colors of the stars but the Lady's translucent back becomes Purple on the Blue light and some magic, luminous Gold when the light is Green. Even I, a full grownup was impressed.
- Lights stay on for about 45 minutes if no buttons are touched.
- There is a little book that combines the Celestial Ladybug story with instructions on how to use the toy and a guide showing the seven constellations projected on the ceiling.
The manual recommends that she is kept on a flat surface, 5-6 feet below the ceiling but, from what I can observe, she's going to be in bed with my girl and it doesn't really matter if some of the stars look a bit blurred for as long as she is happy.
As for me, I am happy because she's happy. She told me that her friends in school all wished they had a little Ladybug friend too.
This item is available from several vendors at Amazon.
Customer Review: Simple yet great nightlight - even for adults! Summary: 5 Stars
I was amazed by the number of reviews for this night light, however, after having bought it for my daughter I now "get it".
This is a really great night light. It is super lightweight - about the same as a regular stuffed animal. However, it has a hard shell with star shaped holes which project light onto the ceiling and walls. There is an on-off button on the battery compartment, so you can turn it completely off as desired. However, there is also an on button on top, plus three additional buttons, each selects a different color, amber, blue and green. It comes with a star guide, so you can look for the constellations that they've replicated with the light patterns - my daughter loves doing this.
As previous reviewers comment, the blue is by far the nicest color. I also read somewhere that blue light can enhance sleep, so there's another reason to select the blue color. The turtle-light will project the stars onto the walls and ceiling for 45 minutes then automatically turns off. It is just bright enough to allow low vision in the room, which helps my daughter not be scared, but it's not so bright that it hinders sleep - it's just right.
The light effect is so pleasant and the turtle so lightweight that I'm considering taking this with us on an upcoming 3 week international vacation.
The only thing that could make this light better would be the possibility of selecting longer time periods for the light to be on (such as all night)and the option of plugging it in if so desired. However, even without those features this is a great light!!! i'm considering buying a second one of these so that both her bedroom and ours can have stars at night.
It would also be great to use for star effects if having an evening party or gathering with low lighting (just a thought...)
Great night light.
