We've had our ladybug for over a year now and love it. We initially bought it for our then 11-month-old who hated being in the car after dark. Other toys light up for a second and then go out, but the bug stays on for 45 minutes. As she got older, we used it in her room at night when she went to sleep and to check on her during the night. The blue stars give off enough light to see the room without waking her up. It's also great when we travel to keep her sleeping environment consistent. "Star" and "moon" were some of her first words. She seriously loves the thing. Now that she's two, we use it to help her fall asleep. She's learned how to operate it herself, so it goes into the crib with her to give her something to occupy herself with until she drifts off to sleep. It's not too stimulating, but is soothing. We also bought the turtle for our 7-year-old godson who also loves it, so I expect our daughter will continue enjoying her ladybug for years to come.
Technical details: First, all the reviews about lights going out or fading or not being bright enough are not reliable. These people need to change the batteries. I know because I was one of them. We have gone through several sets of batteries and had noticed that the lights get dim when the batteries are low, but a few months ago two of the colors stopped working at all. I thought something must be wrong with the thing, so I emailed the company. I got a detailed reply telling me to change the batteries and try a couple more things if that didn't work. I thought it was silly, but changed them anyway and guess what? It worked! There are no bulbs in the ladybug, just LEDs so they don't burn out. It really is just the batteries. I've used it in a room with 10ft ceilings on a regular height bed and you can clearly see all the stars. But if the batteries start getting low, it will fade and some lights will go out. You need to put new batteries in it as soon as you get it too. The display batteries don't last long.
Bottom line: Buy it. I'm usually pretty cheap when it comes to toys, so the price seemed a little steep to me, but this seriously is the most used toy we have owned. It's been worth every penny. This is now my go-to baby shower and birthday gift. Love the ladybug!
