Customer Review: Wonderful idea...but imperfect execution

This item is a WONDERFUL idea, but it has two key flaws:
1) there isn't a continuous play mode!! There are only two timed options (23 and 45 min), then the sound turns off. My newborn needed the sound maintained continuously to STAY asleep, not just to FALL asleep. Thus, we would have to keep pressing the button over and over, waking up ourselves when the sound would turn off to keep her from waking up - beyond annoying.
2) the full-size model is enormous - you do not need anything larger than the "on-the-go" or travel model, so why make this so big? To charge more, that's why.
I gave it two stars because it has so much potential to be a fabulous product:
--the sheep is adorable, soft, and it is great to be able to hang it from ANYWHERE with the velcro loop. Plus, it is battery operated, which is a huge blessing (batteries are pre-installed, and are very long lasting - we did not replace ours over three+ months of use).
--the way the sound "machine" is removable from the body of the sheep is ingenious. This way, you can wash the sheep and reinsert the machine when dry.
--LOVE the volume control: it's a dial, so you have complete control (not just low and high like so many children's products today).
--The rain sound is the closest to generic "white noise."
--This model (the original, or larger model) has the heartbeat sound, crucial for newborns.
This product would be perfect with a 1) continuous play mode and 2) a smaller size (e.g., the travel "on-the-go" size). The latter, of course, would bring the price down equal to the travel size, which is what this product is worth, imo.
Due to these factors, you are better off with Brookstone's sound machine, which has not only timed settings, but also continuous play, AND all the sounds you really need: heartbeat, in-utero (weird sloshing sound with "glub-glubs"), white noise, automobile and more. It's not cute and plush (and you have to plug it in w/ battery backup), but is WORKS.
Customer Review: Great Rain Sound, Just Wish It Would Play Continuously

I received this product as a gift and have been using it in my bedtime routine with my 4 1/2 month old with much success. Unlike the reviews for some other sound machines, I cannot detect a repeating sound loop. I always use the "rain" mode and it sounds like continuous heavy rain with the occasional subtle splash of running water (very realistic sounding). I am not a fan of the other noises though. Let's just say that the "heart" sound is not for those recovering from wartime-induced PTSD....The first time I tried this sound, I felt like I needed to duck for cover in the trenches or something! It literally sounds like bombs were being dropped! But seriously, not that I remember what it sounds like to be inside a womb, but the heartbeat sound just doesn't seem very soothing to me! The "whale" sound is quite amusing and the ocean sound seems a bit too stimulating (when the waves come crashing in it gets louder). This doesn't bother me though because I like the "rain" sound so much (it even puts me to sleep while I listen to it through the baby monitor!!), so I don't care that the other sounds need some improvement. The sheep is very cute and soft and my baby seems to love it too.
My only real complaint is that there is not an option for continuous play. The 45-minute option works fine for my baby without causing her to wake-up when it shuts off IF she falls asleep shortly after I turn it on. However, I like to turn it on before I lay her in her crib to create a "sleepy mood" and prepare her for bedtime (while reading a book, rocking her, feeding, etc). Although once it stops, all you have to do is press the preferred sound button to turn it back on, if you want to start it over again while it is still going, you have to turn the nob to turn it off and on again and then press the sound button to get the sounds to play for the 45 minutes again. I still really like this product, I just really wish that there was an option for allowing it play all night if desired because many babies will notice the sound change and wake-up.

We purchased the Sleep Sheep from a local toy store in our home town out of curiosity. Our daughter has been on a predictable bed time routine for about 6 months now (she is now 18 months old). We were looking for an addition to her routine and possibly a sleep attachment object. The Sleep Sheep is cuddly soft, and comes with four sounds with adjustable volume. The sounds are comforting, but at our daughter's age the genuine womb heartbeat sound is not terribly comforting, and the whales seem to intrigue her more than help her sleep. That leaves us to cycle between the rain and the ocean sound. If we were make one change to the Sleep Sheep it would be to the back. The sounds can be triggered and switched rather easily, so when an older baby snuggles the Sleep Sheep the sound can be triggered from the soothing rain to a rather startling heart beat in contrast. That aside, which isn't a big deal, the Sleep Sheep is an adorable, soft and clever sleep aide. The Sleep Sheep, in combination with a good, solid bed time routine, a comfortable sleep sack so that baby doesn't get cold, (and in our case a lullaby C.D. gently playing in the background) makes for a happy baby, happily sleeping through the night. Don't purchase the Sleep Sheep with the expectations that this will alone make your child be a happy sleeper. It is apart of a good night's sleep but not the catch. Please don't let your child sleep with this toy unless you're confident that they're capable of turning their face away when breathing, too. To everyone who suggests playing white noise on end all night in order for their baby to sleep might want to look into it a bit more. Recent studies are beginning to show that it's not a great idea for infant development [...] A timer on a soothing sound is not such a bad idea. You want a baby to learn to fall asleep on their own anyhow, right?
The Sleep Sheep is an all around a sweet product that is lovable.

Love love love this adorable sheep! Our little boy has used it since day one and in almost 3 months, we've rarely had any trouble putting him to bed. At first we tried the heartbeat, but it didn't have much effect. Now, we just turn on the ocean sounds and he's out in a matter of minutes - and so am I. Here are the pros we've experienced:
Patterned sound - One study showed that white noise for prolonged periods of time may stunt hearing & language development. None of the sounds on this sheep constitute white noise because each setting has variations in pattern. I know it's only one study, but why take chances?
45-minute continuous play - our little guy is usually out in a few minutes, but it's nice to have this option. It's a good length of time without playing the whole night.
Volume control knob - Allows for a wide variety of volumes. So much better than high and low.
Velcro strap - allows attachment almost anywhere. We have it hanging on the outside of our crib.
Removable sound box - allows for easy washing of the stuffed animal.
Cons so far - not many. If I had to come up with one it might be that this is so large and a little heavy, but that's only compared to a newborn. I expect this sheep will be part of my son's life for many years to come, and eventually the size will be perfect for him to carry around.
I cannot recommend this sleep sheep highly enough! It has saved us many nights' sleep!

We received the Sleep Sheep for my then 17-mos-old daughter as a Christmas gift. We had been trying to transition her to sleeping in her own bed & were also trying to encourage weaning. This adorable sheep is the perfect assistant!
It's so soft & cuddly, & the sounds are very soothing. I've fallen asleep more than once listening to it. DD loves to choose her own sound with the easy-to-use buttons tucked in the back. This sheep has not only allowed us to transition her to sleeping in her own bed, but now she's in her own room. Though she's still nursing to sleep, it's taking less time, & some nights she'll skip it altogether. We even used it during a 22-hour return trip drive, & she slept the majority of the time, unlike the original 22-hour drive out. The durable velcro loop on the back allows it to be attached almost anywhere.
I wish I had known the amazing results we would get with this toy! If I had, I would have bought it when she was first born. Any new or expecting mother should get this toy. I gush about it to everyone, & it will be a staple baby shower gift from me. And if it ever wears out with our subsequent children, I will be replacing it immediately.
This is the best baby product I've ever used. I love it, & even better, so does my daughter.
