The Deluxe Door Top Lock rests on top of the door so tots can't reach it. A peg mounts on the door frame and the latch slides around the peg to lock and release. Perfect for interior basement doors or doors to the garage. Opens from either side of the door. Easy grip wand extension for shorter adults. Fits all standard interior doors up to 1 3/8" thick. I always read low reviews before buying anything and I have to admit - I really like this product. People I read who say they have problems are most likely dealing with user error.
* If installed correctly (away from hinges near the far side or opening of the door) wont break
* Make sure to read discription before buying to make sure it will fit and used on the right type of doors
* If you do not disipline or educate your kids - yeah, they can break this by constant yanking and pulling:
I found when my, just turned 2 yr old, daughter tried to open doors as soon as she tried and it resisted I showed her the lock and how it worked she gave up. Yes, she tried a few more times afterwards out of habit and I just went over to her and again showed her it was locked and she gave up permanitly. No punishment needed.
* When opening doors do not yank hard - if you feel resistance then just take the time to look up and move the lock over and open - also do not slam doors to prevent risk of breaking - if it is in the lock position you can risk breaking it
So, in otherwords - don't abuse the item (like with any item)and it works great.
One suggestion: on our bedroom door it does fly off as the part thatlays on the door is never screwed down so it can slide and we do open it fast many times - so we just put a nail at the end of the top of the door barely sticking up, just enough to stop it and problem solved. The other 5 doors we have these installed on we dont have any issues with and this helps us, even with our 10 yr old!
