Baby Products Reviews of CARES Child Aviation Restraint System

Customer Review: It's just okay - better than lugging the carseat on the plane!
Summary: 3 Stars

We bought the CARES restraint system for our daughter when she was 2 1/2 and were going from CA to NJ. It worked good and kept her in her seat. She also wasn't able to reach the seat in front of her and kick it. We unlatched the chest clip and took her out of it when she fell asleep so she would be more comfortable. The first time we used it the flight attendant almost wasn't going to let us use it because she had never seen it before. I showed her the label, but she still took it to another flight attendant to make sure it was okay. The next flight we took, the attendants raved about it! I guess word is getting out that these things are around. This restraint did its job, but wasn't nearly worth the money we paid for it - $75. It was worth it to not have to lug the carseat on the plane though.

Customer Review: CARES Harness
Summary: 5 Stars

Worth every penny I paid for it. Simple, one piece design was easy to install on the plane seat. Easily fit around the Southwest airlines seat...the belt fit underneath the tray table of the seat behind so there was no inconveniencing other passengers. Installed in minutes. I had traveled previously with a car seat and was in a lather by the time we reached the plane. The CARES harness fit in the side pocket of a small backpack. Southwest was familiar with the harness so I had no problems from the flight attendants when using it. I found the best way to secure my daughter was to follow the CARES directions but leave the shoulder straps loose until the lap belt was fastened tight enough across her lap. Then tighten the shoulder straps. This kept her from sliding under the lap belt.

Customer Review: Great product
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the greatest thing ever!!! It held my 2 year old securely and snuggly. I didn't have to worry about the hassle of a car seat, especially since when we fly we rent a car at the other end and also a car seat. It is a little difficult to install on some plane seats but since there are 4 of us I just make sure my husband and younger son sit behind us. Also, for the people who are concerned about the belt pinching their child's neck, I solved the problem by getting a neck pillow. You could also probably use harness strap covers (they cost like 5 bucks at Babies r us or use the ones from your carseat) to protect their neck. Also if you have issues with the flight crew about using it, there is something in the CARES website that you can print out showing it is FAA approved.

Customer Review: Not a great device
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought two of these for my twin daughters (just turned three) for a flight to Jamaica. They certainly are easier to carry through an airport than a car seat, and easy to install, but the way the straps are situated, if you child falls asleep (as mine did) the strap/top buckle hit right around the neck if your child slides down or slumps at all, making the device quite dangerous. Our child literally had an indentation on her neck from this device. Several people sitting around us commented how dangerous the device could be to a sleeping child, including the flight attendant. (And yes, the device was correctly installed.)

If you choose to use the CARES harness, I would suggest only using it for take-off and landings, and use the regular lap belt during the flight.

Customer Review: absolutely won't travel without this
Summary: 5 Stars

I can not tell you just how much we honestly love this product. We bought this after our son kicked the seat in front of him repeatedly one flight. This keeps him from being close enough to the seat back in front of him and he also finds this more comfortable. We recently brought his car seat on board for a red eye thinking that he would find the car seat more comfortable to sleep in, but he was really upset to be in his car seat and wanted to be in this instead. On the return flight we checked the car seat and used this and he had a much easier time getting comfortable. The only complaint we have ever really had was that this is not a 5 point harness so if our son is particularly squirmy then he can get out at the bottom of this as there is no strap between his legs.
