Baby Products Reviews of CARES Child Aviation Restraint System

Customer Review: Worked great for 21 months old traveler
Summary: 5 Stars

We recently traveled to Florida and my 21 month old son did great wearing this harness for the whole flight down and most of the flight back to Minneapolis. I believe it worked well for us because my son does really well in his car seat and falls asleep in it all the time. The harness does keep the child quite upright, such that my son's head did roll forward while sleeping. But he must have been comfortable because he took 1 to 1 1/2 hr naps both ways while strapped in! (The loud background/white noise of the plane engines probably also helped, similar to highway road sounds.) We had no problems with the harness at all and I was very glad that we had purchased it. For me it was well worth the price for the comfort in knowing that he was safe and not going anywhere! I am definitely planning on using this again on our next flight with our son (assuming he is still in the recommended 22-44 lbs range).

Customer Review: Worked well but really not very useful
Summary: 2 Stars

While I love the concept of my toddler with a seatbelt on the plane that was appropriate to her size this ultimately proved to be useless for our family. I hated having to bother the people behind me to attach the seatbelt to the seat (something that I didn't think about and that no one mentioned prior to me buying it.) I also found it heavy to carry (not huge or bulky but added real weight to the carry-on luggage.

My daughter, did enjoy having her own belt, but had more fun playing with the buckle. Then she wanted to crawl into my lap anyways. Especially on take-off and landing. I bought this when she was 1. She is now 3. Since the "air hostesses" won't let her sit in my lap for take-off and landings we find that the regular seatbelt seems very secure. I gave mine away to a neighbor.

So, a reasonable product, just not right for my family.

Customer Review: CARES airline toddler harness
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a CPST, child passenger safety specialist, and have spoken to Louise Stoll, the inventor of the CARES harness. I have purchased several CARES harnesses for grandchildren as well as for my bi-coastal clients. While the parents can stow the big bulky carseat below, their toddler can sit safely restrained for the flight, and it all packs away in a small tote sack. Toddlers are happier and so are the parents. No worrying about how to fit the carseat into the small airline seats, worrying about the person in front being able to recline their seat and squashing the toddlers feet in doing so.
All airlines should carry the CARES harness for parents to rent or use for the flights. With the CARES harness, no more waiting in the aisle 10 minutes for parents to put their carseats in the airline seat. A must have for traveling families. A great gift idea.

Customer Review: Good child flight harness
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great product for kids who are too big to travel in a carseat but may be too small to be firmly held by a lap belt alone. Certainly this product is lightweight and portable, a pleasure after lugging carseats onto airplanes. It installs quickly and easily. The only downsides are that when it is fastened firmly, it's hard for the child to lean over and sleep. I loosened it so my son could lean to the side with a couple pillows. Also when it is pulled tight, the main strap pulls away from the seat and may not be comfortable for the child's head. Sometimes you have to play with the installation. Overall, though, it's a great product. While it may seem a little bit like overkill, after one bout of severe turbulence on an airplane, you will appreciate its value to keep your kids safely strapped to their seats.

Customer Review: Impossible to recover from plane if lost - looks too much like airline equipment
Summary: 3 Stars

I recently bought the CARES and was thrilled to try it out on a recent trip. After a long haul flight from the middle east to the US with a massive delay, I was tired and accidently left my CARES on the plane. After many, many, many phone calls and runaround (thanks for nothing NW!!), I was finally told that the cleaners had seen my harness left behind but thought it was a seatbelt extender and belonged to the plane. NW then told me that my plane went onto Europe where the harness would likely be thrown away as they would not have a clue what it was.
I called the manufacturing company and suggested they add an owners label where people could add their details in the event of loss and/or change the color to ensure that this items stands out as not being part of the aircraft equipment. Very expensive for just 1 use!
