Baby Products Reviews of CARES Child Aviation Restraint System

Customer Review: only for kids up to 40 inches tall
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought the CARES thinking I'd use it for a couple years for my 2.5 yr old daughter. (She's 29 pounds- far from the 40 pound weight limit). I was dismayed to read in the package instructions that its only for children up to 40 inches tall. She's 37.5 inches tall now and will certainly be 40 inches in a few months. I was also disappointed this info wasn't in the online descriptions.

Its not too hard to install. And its better than carrying a carseat. But my daughter found it uncomfortable and kept sliding down in the seat since there's no crotch strap- which I think would be even worse with a younger child-- who you'd want to be able to use it for to make it worth spending [...] for another 'carseat,' so I'm really not sure who it makes the most sense for. I think we'll use it for take offs and landings, but my daughter sleeps on plane trips and it was sliding up around her neck- uncomfortable and dangerous.

I also can't really tell why its only approved to 40 inches- it seems like it would work fine and possibly better for kids taller than that.

Customer Review: EXACTLY what we needed for easy travel with toddler/preschooler
Summary: 4 Stars

I have a 3 year old daughter and we fly several times each year. Now that many of the airlines don't let you board early with kids and car seats are such a pain in the neck to carry around the airport I was searching for another answer. I carefully researched this product and tried it in July on a short flight before we fly cross country later this year. The CARES seat belt converter is wonderful - it made our trip a million times easier and I felt like our daughter was safe and secure, which is clearly more important. My one criticism is similar to other reviews I read before purchasing - it would be better if the CARES belt made a 5 point harness instead of a 3 point harness. This is the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. That said, my daughter did not slide down or anything and we were happy with the way she was positioned in the seat. The installation is very quick and simple and obviously carrying a little seat belt adapter was a welcome relief from previously lugging a huge car seat. I would absolutely buy this again and am SO thankful to have found it.

Customer Review: Great idea...needs minor modification.
Summary: 4 Stars

We've taken our child on multiple plane trips. He's now 20 months old and around 25lbs. While traveling on a plane he's been in a car seat, a stroll and go, and in our hands, and now the Cares System. Last month we flew for 2.5 hours with him strapped in using the Cares Restraint System. It was easy to install and only took a few minutes. The main strap wrapping around the back of his seat was able to sit flush in between the tray table and the seat. I'm not sure how it would do if the tray table secured into a recess design. The main problem I had and seems to be a common issue, is that they didn't think about a strap going between the legs to hold the child upright. Almost everything you see in the market has this, keeping the child upright and also a bit more secure. "Cares" need to design and have available another strap with a clip that can be added to the existing design, which so many other parents have already purchased. Bottom line- buy it if you want to make life easier and create a more comfortable experience for your child.

Customer Review: I'd give it a 5 star, but we had a little issue - but please read

First off, let me say that I loved this product. It was exactly what I was looking for and works so easy. It is lightweight and so easy to put on. My only issue is that the plane we took had leather seats and my daughter kept slipping down and I kept having to prop her back up. I ended up tucking a blanket in the seat to prevent her from slipping. She is two, weighs about 29lbs and is of small build. So,I think when she is a bit older and bigger it will be perfect. It sure beats lugging the car seat on the plane, gave us extra room that was normally taken by the car seat, and kept my daughter from kicking the back of the seat of the person in front of us. The flight attendants were so excited to see it (they all heard about it but hadn't seen it yet). It really was very comfortable for our daughter and she didn't complain anymore than a normal two year old would.
Overall, I would highly recommend it to all my friends who travel with kids age 2 to 4.

Customer Review: Worked well for our small toddler
Summary: 4 Stars

Our 15 month toddler is at the minimum size for using this restraint and it worked just fine on her. She is 22lbs and 29" as a point of comparison for others who are thinking about getting this harness since most of the reviews center around larger toddlers. Everything was on the tightest setting, ie the harness length as well as the airplane seat belt but she sat in it just fine for take-off, landing, and during turbulent times. She also fell asleep sitting upright in it so I am assuming that it was comfortable enough. She did slide down a little since there is no crotch strap due to FAA regulations but sliding her back up every so often was not an issue. I am amazed that a lot of parents seem to be able to keep their kids strapped into this harness or car seat for the duration of the flight but that was something that our toddler was unable to tolerate. She simply cannot stay in one place for more than 20 minutes.
