Customer Review: Disappointed with Bummis Kit

After reading positive reviews online and looking into a variety of cloth diapering options for my new baby, I chose to purchase the Bummis Diapering Kit for $159. The kit advertises that the diapers are good for babies from 8-15 lbs, but that is not the case at all! My baby was 9lbs at birth and the diaper/cover combo was HUGE on her, making it nearly impossible for her to fit into any newborn sized clothes. Not only did she look ridiculous in the bulky diapers, but the cover also rubbed against her umbilical cord, which contributed to it bleeding and getting infected, and ultimately a trip to the doctor's office. In an effort to fix the umbilical cord problem, I went out and bought two newborn sized covers for 4-9 lb babies which had a cutout for the umbilical cord. While the covers fit much better, there was no way that the diaper insert would fit in the much smaller cover - there was just too much fabric! So I ended up using cheap/thin Gerber diapers with the newborn covers because that's what would fit. The newborn sized covers were too small for her in about a week, and the small sized covers that came with the kit were still too big. She is now 7 weeks old and weighs 12 lbs - what should be the perfect weight for the diapers. I recently tried to commit to using them for a full day of diapering (after having periodically used them for the last seven weeks), determined to get my money's worth...that lasted about three diaper changes. She peed three times in one hour and woke up from sleep each time because of the wetness. Additionally, the covers leave bright red marks on her legs and her belly, which is enough to make me stop using them. I will say that I have not had any leaking problems and I like using the diapers on my changing table and in the diaper bag for messes. It's primarily the poor fit and the sizing of the covers that makes this system not work. I am not giving up on cloth diapering though - I'm just going to buy a smaller quantity of something else next time to make sure I like it before invest in a whole bunch!
