Baby Products Reviews of Born Free Twin Pack Wide Neck Bottles, 9-OunceCustomer Review: please read- there is a trick to venting these bottles... Summary: 5 Stars
I was searching for a bottle that didn't leak (all of my Avent and Breast Flow leaked terribly). These bottles are fantastic - as long as you figure out the venting trick (it's so silly that they just don't tell you this). The "venting system" has a little, rubbery insert that goes under the nipple and protrudes into the bottle. this protuberance as an air venting slit that keeps the nipple from collapsing. this slit needs to be facing towards the ceiling when you are feeding baby. I'm guessing it's because the air your baby is causing isn't forceful enough to really push the bubbles out- but if you let the bubbles RISE, as they do naturally, you will see a continuous stream of bubbles popping up inside the bottle as your baby drinks. it's really no big deal. when i make a bottle, i always make sure this little slit is situated where the words on the bottle are. if you don't place the slit anywhere particular, you can always twist the bottle while baby is drinking - you will eventually see bubbles.
my little girl is a voracious eater. she will take down an entire 9 oz bottle without coming off the nipple once- as long as that slit is where it's supposed to be. these bottles DO NO LEAK (i have three i bought at separate times). It's so ridiculous that no one tells you to twist the bottle if it's not venting. fantastic product- if you don't mind the price.
Customer Review: Nipples don't collapse for us... Summary: 5 Stars
I wrote a review on these when we'd had them for about a week, and now since we've been using them for a month, I just wanted to say that we STILL love them. The only reason I almost didn't buy them was because so many reviews say that the nipples collapse, but we have never had that happen! Actually, it did happen twice, when I filled bottles in the middle of the night and FORGOT to put the venting pieces back in before giving them to my son. When they are not put together correctly, the nipples easily collapse and leak. When they are put together correctly, I have tried myself, to make them collapse, by sucking on them as hard as I could, twisting them, etc, but I just can't make them collapse at all with the ventilation system in it and pushed down tightly into the top of the bottle, as it is meant to be.
Also note, I have heard from other moms that the Dr. Browns ventilation pieces and nipples fit into these Born Free bottles (the wide mouth ones), so if you prefer that system it should work, and you'll still have the BPA free benefits.
We have used Dr. Browns and Avent bottles, until I read about the BPA issue. Nasty stuff, look it up if you aren't aware of it. Glass bottles would not work for us, but these have been great. I don't notice any difference from the ventilation in the Avent bottles we've been using recently.
Customer Review: Potentially dangerous, and the worst customer service ever! Summary: 1 Stars
I happily bought six of these bottles (four from Amazon and two from Whole Foods), since i was looking for BPA-free bottles. The bottles morphed into unrecognizable white and crystallized blobs, one after the other (I stopped using them when this happened with the third one). They all started out with a small white mark near the mouth of the bottle, and did the bizarre morphing thing soon afterwards. I had the bottles in the microwave sterilizer with both a Dr. Brown and an Avent bottle, neither one of which had any problems.
I would love to post a photo of the blob because I am convinced that anything that could turn into THAT cannot be good for my baby.
The worst was that I could not get a response from the company. I wrote emails, I spoke to one of their customer service reps, wrote more emails...and nothing came of any of it. I then reported to the Better Business Bureau in their region (Louisiana), which wrote me back several weeks later to say that THEY had not gotten any response from the company either.
My daughter is the most precious thing in the world to me...would I trust her well-being to a company that produces a flawed product and THEN refuses to respond to legitimate concerns, even from the Better Business Bureau? HECK, NO! I would urge everyone to take care before buying this bottle.
Customer Review: little too expensive but worth it Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using a few types of bottles for my kid such as Dr. Brown, Avent and Born Free. I have to say that BornFree bottle is so far the best.
We also experienced the problem with the nipples being collapsed. It was really frustrated for both parents and baby. I had to take the whole venting system out and clean then carefully put back then it worked. Sometime it didn't. My wife complained about this and I thought about replacing them with different brand.
However, my mother in law never had the nipple collapsing problem. We observed her way when putting the bottle and venting system together. First, after she mixed the formula, she then puts the rubber piece into the plastic piece of the venting system. She then places them on top of the bottle. Here is the most critical part: Instead of pressing these pieces into the bottle (like I did), she bangs it a few times (light bang). Then she closes it with the nipple and cap. It just works fine all the time. Since then we have never seen the nipple collapse again.
Now I'm expect another baby in a few months, all the bottles (nipples, venting system) are ready to be reused. None of the parts get worn out yet. The bottles are still shiny after washing.
This is one of my best investment on my babies.
Customer Review: Very satisfied with these bottles! Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter is breast fed, and we have used these bottles with my daughter since she was 3 weeks old with pumped breast milk. I have never tried any other bottles as its been smooth sailing from the get go with these bottles -- we are very pleased with them. She does not have any more gas when having the bottles than she does when she nurses. They are definitely slow flow which is great for babies who are used to being breastfed. There are several parts but you can put everything in the dishwasher (we use one of those special dishwasher baskets from Prince Lionheart for bottle pieces which is very helpful), or handwash if you prefer, so that doesn't bother us -- but we never had simpler bottles so I guess we're just used to them having several pieces. I am surprised by many of the reviews that complain about collapsing nipples and leaks, as we have never had that issue. We always use the bottles with all the parts and the Born Free nipples, so I think if you use them with all the pieces, you won't have any problems. She also seems comfortable with the wide mouth nipple, but like another reviewer, my guess is they get used to whatever they start with and prefer that size. I would recommend them to anyone who's concerned about BPA and who wants a well made product.
