Baby Products Reviews of Born Free Drinking Cup, Colors May VaryCustomer Review: People, people-- research prior! Summary: 4 Stars
Okay, here is the biggest problem I see with 80% of the negative reviews-- this cup is SUPPOSED to "leak." In no uncertain terms, the product is billed as "free-flowing." Which, to me, and I think my English teachers would all agree, means drip, drip, drip. If you are looking for a leak-free sipper, keep looking. If you are angry that the sipper leaks, I would suggest that you read the full product description before you buy. These sippers are basically identical in appearance to the Born Free TRAINER cup, which does not leak. As an aside, I will also offer up this bit of information-- it takes nothing short of a commercial vacuum to get liquid out of those spouts, but my son is very fond of the shape, hence I bought one of these, and everyone is more or less pleased.
The reason these get one star reduction is that the cost of the cup is highway robbery-- if, like me, you have invested a small fortune in sippers, trying to find one your child will accept, $10+ is really too much. Yes, you can purchase the replacement spouts, but here I will let you in on another bit of interesting information-- the collar and spout do not make the fantastic seal that they do when you buy the pre-packaged cup-- why?!? I do not mind leaking from the spout tip, where liquid is supposed to come from, but around the collar is unacceptable. My other minor complaint is that the handles are cheaply made-- they are quite flimsy and after a few uses/washes, they "spin" around the sipper as they please. When baby picks up the sipper with one hand (which they will eventually do), the sipper may come crashing down at their face. Ah yes, it is only a light bottle filled with a few oz. of liquid, but it's enough to make even the bravest toddler cry for their mommy.
Note: Unless your child has a VERY strong suck, I would recommend bypassing the trainer spout and going directly to these-- yes, they will leak, but baby won't get blue in the face from sucking or throw it down in disgust (because they aren't able to get anything out).
Customer Review: If I wanted I sieve, I'd buy a sieve Summary: 1 Stars
This product just offends me. Representing the worst of American enterprise. A company that preys on parents' fears of possibly dangerous chemicals to sell you the most poorly designed solution for giving ANY CHILD liquids... And then charges you a premium for the privilege.
If any of you have ever gotten up, bleary eyed, at some god awful hour and tried to put the 10000 parts of this horror show cup together, while holding a screaming child, and trying to pour into it... You know my pain.
But that's not the worst... This ridiculous contraption is a sieve. It leaks whether it's "training" or "drinking"... Some are worse than others... And by worse I mean LEAKS LIKE A GARDEN HOSE over leaks like Chinese Water torture.
It's simple really... Sippy cups were invented to avoid spills! The technology is not new. The science has been mastered. Why re-invent the wheel and make it square?!!!
So, it's like this... After having successfully put this cup together... Successfully filled it and given it to your thirsty child... Are you allowed your own cup of coffee and the 3 minutes to enjoy it? No, sir... No, ma'am... You must now chase your kid around with a rag and wipe up spills and hope she doesn't get the shaky-shaky urge on your favor wife's favorite Persian rug.
I wish I could sue this company just to embarrass them! But this is all the time I'm willing to spend destroying whatever reputation they may have.
Stay away... I'm getting a blow torch and melting them down with my kid today. The fumes are safe, right?
Customer Review: Great cup (and leaking explained) Summary: 5 Stars
We were originally drawn to this cup because of the environmental aspect and the fact that children my family knows love theirs'. My daughter has been using traditional plastic cups for years, but my son was having trouble making the transition from bottles. We thought we'd try these for him and get the added benefit of less chemicals.
It was obvious as soon as I opened the package that it was going to leak. The opening in the spout was too large not to. Sure enough, some milk came out when I held the bottle upside down. To my surprise, the flow stopped after only a couple of drops. I realized that they would be no good for my son, but I gave it to my daughter to use and she LOVED it.
Because I was confused that people would make the claim that these bottles do not leak, I did some more research (which I should have done in the first place.) It turns out that BornFree makes Drinking Cups AND Training Cups. What distinguishes the two is the volume of the bottle and the spouts, hard spout for the drinking and soft for the training. I bought a Training Cup. The soft spout has a much smaller opening. When I held a full bottle upside down it did not leak. I gave it to my son and he LOVED it. It is by far his favorite sippy cup. His bottles are going in the recycling bin this weekend.
If you child can be relied on to keep his/her cup upright, the drinking cup is great. If she/he cannot, try to the training cup or get the drinking cup, a package of the soft spout and save the hard ones for when he/she is bigger.
Customer Review: The Good Tremendously Outweighs the Leaks That Can Be Avoided Summary: 5 Stars
I was pretty bummed to read some of the bad reviews for these drinking cups, as I strongly disagree with the complaints. I have been using the rubber spouts with my kids for some time now and I love them. Brand new, these cups DO NOT LEAK (NOTE: If using the rubber spouts). However, if you give it to your baby or toddler to drink in their crib or to walk around the house with (which isn't a good idea any way, in my opinion--I only give it to my kids when they are in their highchair and eating a meal/snack) then they are going to do what all kids do: chew on the rubber spout (especially if they are teething). This inevitably causes the tiny hole in the spout to become bigger, thus leaking. This is actually explained on the packaging, and the manufacturer warns the consumer not to let the child chew on the spout. If one makes the effort to watch their child and ensure they don't chew on the spouts, then they will last for a very long time with no leaks. And if your child does gnaw away at one, you can easily replace the spout, as all parts are sold separately.
Some consumers complained about the 7 parts that have to be washed by hand--believe me, it is hardly as bad as it sounds. They can quickly be washed with very little pain. If you care about your child's health and future, which you must if you're even looking into purchasing a product like this, then hey, a little effort and supervision might be required--but it is SO worth it!! In short, I love these cups!!
Customer Review: Leaky, leaky, leaky Summary: 1 Stars
I have never written a product review before but felt compelled to save other moms the hassle that I have gone through with these cups (not to mention the expense!). I bought 10 of these cups to replace my traditional plastic sippy cups to avoid having my 19 month old exposed to potentially harmful chemicals.
He had no problem using the cups, which is great, however, these cups leak like nobody's business. No shaking required - when left on their side or hung upside-down (as toddlers are apt to do) these things just continually leak. My son has taken to making art projects on the floor with the spilled milk. I'm not talking just a few drops and then the leaking stops - the dripping continues and you end up with big puddles on the floor!
I had read some reviews prior to my purchase that suggested that these cups were a bit leaky but I figured if they were healthier for my son, I would live with it. Well, in the end, I just ended up using my old plastic cups because I got tired of cleaning up milk spills off of the floor and having to change clothes.
The straw that broke the camel's back was last night when I had to change my son out of his pajamas and change his bedding because everything was soaked with milk when he left the cup on its side (not to mention that his hair was wet with milk too).
I am going to try another product (maybe stainless steel) because these cups are terribly designed and just not worth the price.
