Customer Review: Leak Clarification

Prospective purchasers of this product should know that any sippy cup can leak from two different places: the seal around the top of the bottle (where you fill it) and the nipple itself. It is important to note every reviewer that complains of leaks is referring to the nipple and NOT the seal around the top of the bottle. I have tested a lot of sippy cups and found they fall into one of two categories: turning them upside down/shaking them will either cause fluid to come out or it won't. The difference isn't one bottle being defective or leaky it is matter of the bottle's purpose and design. The underlying goal is to transition children from bottles, where they suck and get individual blobs of liquid in between swallows to where they drink continuous flows without having to stop to swallow and breathe.
Basically, the bottles that don't leak require suction, sometimes a lot, for fluid to flow; usually employing a simple valve. These are supposed to be easier for younger children who are less adept at controlling the flow out of their bottle. The bottles that do 'leak' require no suction to start flow and instead only slow the flow down. These are intended for children who don't need a valve to shut the flow off and are further along in learning how to drink continuously. I think children eventually learn to drink with either type and I haven't seen anything authoritative that says one approach is better that the other.
So, does fluid come out if you shake born free or leave them on their side? Yes, fluid will dribble out. They are designed to be free flowing and this is a consequence. But they don't leak. If your child is very 'active' this may be a consideration. I started my child with these at 9mos and by 1yr he was sipping out of cups.
They come with a water tight cap for traveling.
One other note, I noticed some reviewers referring to juice in their bottles. I have read in many places that regularly drinking juice from bottles/sippy cups is bad for a variety of reasons, like tooth decay. Also, though these bottles are BPA free I would hesitate to put anything acidic, like some juices, in them as this may cause the plastic to break down.
