Baby Products Reviews of Boon Flair Pneumatic Pedestal Highchair - Frosty Blue and WhiteCustomer Review: Finally, style and function at the same time Summary: 5 Stars
Finally a highchair made by folks who not only have a great sense of design but also must actually have kids!
1) The fact that there are no crevices or corners to trap food should've been the most obvious concept in highchairs, but no other manufacturer has bothered to implement that idea until now. I no longer have to bring a highchair outside to hose down with a pressure washer and a toothbrush - I can clean the Flair with babywipes and one hand!
2) The pedestal base is a welcome change from the A-frames of other highchairs that were not only trip hazards but also a pain to clean. The smooth pedestal easily wipes clean with the aforementioned baby wipes (or Lysol wipes for the tough stuff). The pneumatic lift is to other highchairs' height adjustment as power seats in your car are to non-powered seats. It's not only more fun to use, but makes for a better fit, too.
3) The waterproof seat pad (a closed-cell-type foam cushion of the type seen on some boats) is another simple concept that until now hadn't been implemented by other highchair makers. I no longer have to throw a highchair seat in the laundry after every meal because some manufacturer thought it was a bright idea to make it out of cloth so it could have ruffles. This one wipes clean with little effort, and it's removable so you can get around the edges.
4) The fact that the harness is removable for cleaning is yet another genius move that would've been obvious to any parent but seems to have been lost on other highchair manufacturers. Bravo, I say. It's also comfortable for my daughter, and really strong. She definitely puts it to the test, and it's never even given me a scare.
5) The design is simply beautiful, but at a price point that competes with highchairs that are far less practical and much more ugly. Finally, you don't have to shell out $600+ for something beautiful, and you don't have to sacrifice function for style (or vice versa).
6) The tray liners are a great concept, but I only wish a) there were 3 of them included (instead of only 2) so I can do just one dishwasher load at the end of the day, and b) the liners covered the whole surface of the tray. As they're made now, the tray's outer rim is partially exposed, so that you end up having to wash the tray by hand anyway (it's not dishwasher safe for some reason) which seems to defeat the purpose of the liners. It's a small issue which only comes to light because the chair is so outstanding in so many other ways, and I'd still buy this chair if I had to do it over again.
7) How many other companies give 10% of their profits to children's charities? I loved this chair so much I also bought Boon's Frog Pod and Flo faucet cover for the bath. What a great company. They deserve success.
Customer Review: Fun, Functional, and Pretty Summary: 4 Stars
I've had this chair for over 4 months now (purchased when she was 4 months old) and my little one has really grown to love it. We were a little eager to get her sitting up, so though she was a little slouchy at first, she's got the hang of it now.
First off, it is by far the easiest high chair to "wipe" down. Yes, like another reviewer mentioned, the cushion can stain from things like spaghetti sauce, but I've found that if you soak it in soapy warm water it will remove most of it. And another trick in general to get out tough stains/grease, you just add a used up dryer "softener" sheet in the water and it removes stains more easily (this remedy works for removing stains from all over the house and cars). Anyhow, in most cases, the seat just needs a quick wipe down and a rinse of the tray and you're good to go for the next meal. Also, I wanted to mention in response to another reviewer that mentioned you can't remove the tray with one hand, you actually can, I do it ALL the time, you just have to pull one side out first and the other side will follow -- sort of a no-brainer (no offense).
Secondly, lately I have been using the chair to wheel her around the house while I do chores, like cooking, cleaning, folding laundry -- we are fortunate that most of the house has hard wood floors, so I just scoot her all over and she thinks it's a fun game or something. And anytime she gets restless, I just spin her around and she giggles away! The lift has always worked for me as well as the brake, so I'm sorry to hear other people have issue, but like some have mentioned, BOON has the most AMAZING customer service I've ever encountered. They are the most kind, helpful, efficient native-english speaking customer service people around! I can't say enough about them (they helped me with some other Boon products -- feeding supplies that I purchased).
Okay, last off, no one can deny it's an eye catcher. The unique design/appearance is just appealing. I have a baby blog (www.avawhatley.blogspot.com) and any time people have seen her in that chair, we get a ton of questions about where we got the chair and how cool it looks, etc. It creates quite a buzz and I think she has become the poster-child for the Boon products in general among my family, friends, and random visitors. Anyhow, another item you may want to check out is the Boon Squirt Spoon, it has also been a life saver (especially for traveling or going out to eat at restaurants)!
Hope this was helpful!
Customer Review: We love our Boon high chair! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the BEST high chair for the money! You won't be disappointed.
We love that it's super easy to clean and that it looks soooo cool in our kitchen/dining area. The other options (which are really not that much cheaper, by the way), just did not fit our style and I hate the thought of sticky vinyl padding and obnoxious prints.
The chair rolls smoothly across our wood floors and the pneumatic lift is simple to use. The chair has some good weight to it and seems sturdy against a wiggly child.
In response to other comments noted in reviews:
Yes, compared to many other "traditional" high chairs, the tray is small, but this is our first child and first high chair and we didn't know the difference anyway. Plus, why does a child need to have such a huge space on which to smear everything around?
I will agree that the straps don't exactly stay positioned over my child's shoulders, but that is the only design flaw (if you can even call it that).
You should also note that this chair does not offer any way to fold up for storage, but that's okay - we leave it out all the time and consider it useable art!
Edited January 2009 - After ten months of use, we are still absolutely loving our Boon high chair. It's always a conversation piece for guests. Now with some experience, I just want to point out some of the following things:
- Yes, the white foam seat cushion DOES stain from red sauces or dark fruits, so that's kind of annoying, but after a few squirts with a basic cleaner (Clorox Anywhere), the stain fades.
- I can see how this might not be a good chair for a larger/chubby child as the tray sits very close to the child's belly. He's slimming down now as he gets older (17 months), but if my son was any chubbier it would be very tight.
- The tray IS small, but we like it! No you could not use a typical, full-size dinner plate on the tray, but regardless of the type of tray, we wouldn't use a big stoneware dinner plate anyway. It's the perfect size for teaching a child to eat neatly.
- We use a different popular-brand "cutesy" highchair at Grandma's house and it is a PAIN to set up, clean up, and fold up. We all wish would have put the money spent towards another Boon chair. Definitely will do so for their next grandchild!
Customer Review: Great Highchair Summary: 5 Stars
Okay... admittedly, our prior highchair was the worst as far as cleaning (Peg Perego) but this thing is a dream to clean. It takes so little time that I find myself sitting there rubbing it with the washcloth after it's already clean becuase I'm so used to it taking 10 times as long, and never really coming clean in the cracks and crevices until you disassemble the thing.
So it's completely a joy to clean and it moves around so easily on the wheels. We move our child a lot around the kitchen while we're cooking and it's perfect because it's so simple and smooth.
I had two concerns prior to buying it: the small size of the tray (the Peg Perego tray is huge) and the fact that the chair itself seemed small and I was afraid it would be too small for an older child (our child is 16 months). Well, I love the small tray. In fact, I think it's better because the baby learns to contain his food in a smaller place, much like a plate, and not spread it everywhere. Secondly, it's so easy to clean and the tray insert that goes over the main tray is so eaesy to drop in the dishwasher (it comes with two of those). And the seat itself is plenty big. The tray is a little low, believe it or not, but it's fine and it doesn't matter if food drops down because it is SO EASY TO CLEAN.
Overall, I love the sleekness of it, it's a nice, refreshing change. I love how easily it moves around and I love, love, love how amazingly easy it is to clean. Gone are the days of scrubbing in one place to get something off the highchair. The texture of the plastic just swipes clean right away. I have never had to scrub one thing. It literally takes seconds.
So... if you want easy cleanup and a pretty neat looking highchair, this is the chair for you. It's so much better than traditional chairs, with all the crevices, etc. And don't worry about the molded seat being removable and thus there being a crevice for food, it lifts right up so you can quickly and easily swipe your washcloth underneath it and get it spotless in a matter of seconds. It's actually an ingenious design.
We'll use this chair for the next kid too, and I only wish we had it from the beginning. So much aggravation could have been avoided and so much time saved!
Customer Review: Would Never Go Traditional Again! Summary: 5 Stars
I just LOVE this highchair! It cleans easily and moves about our wood floors like magic. The frosty blue is perfect for Any decor and great for a girl or boy. I love the ease of how the highchair moves and swivels. It is very convenient and a nice looking addition to our house. It's not too modern looking, as I was afraid it would be. It really doesn't look weird, just really simple, clean and pretty! Don't be afraid if you don't have a modern house, you'll love it! You'll get lots of, "I wish I bought that!" from friends and family. My 10mo. old daughter loves it too. She likes to "glide" like a princess out to the Lanai to watch the birds. Fun and easy!
The small tray is new to me with our 4th child, and I have to say WE LOVE IT. Please don't be fooled, children really don't need the world's largest eating space. It's just more room to mess up and clean up! Take it from a mom of four who has also done childcare for several years. The tray is easy to remove with one hand. Babies/children won't be able to take the "clear" trays off, but sitters and adults can with ease. The two clear trays are a perfect fit for the dishwasher. I stick mine in when I feel a good sanitize is in need, otherwise I wash with soap and water. And I just snap our bibs to the back of the high chair where the handle is. It works perfect and they dry easily there once wiped off. We have not had any staining issues on any part of the highchair, it's great.
*We have had the big traditional highchairs in the past and I'll never go back or recommend anyone does either after having this beauty! I love the fact it doesn't take up so much darn space and is easy to move about! Also, it is a breeze to wipe up and, ALWAYS looks good. It was worth every penny! TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT! Easy set up and free shipping can't be beat.
Special Notes: It wont move on carpet and this model doesn't recline! Once in a while we wished it would recline, but then we laugh at ourselves because we are just wanting to be lazy out of tiredness or business. LOL. Therefore, I'm so GLAD it doesn't recline! However, if you had twins like I did, and two others, you might want a reclining model for survival reasons. Parenting isn't perfection, but I think this highchair is! :-)
