Baby Products Reviews of Bébésounds Nasal Clear Battery Operated Nasal AspiratorCustomer Review: Gets the job done much better than hospital aspirators Summary: 5 Stars
We constantly have to clean our now 18-month old's little nose, and it has become nearly impossible with the hospital aspirator. Not to mention that it took a lot of time to try and get everything out of the nose on a little protesting wriggling child.
Enter NasalClear, get the job done in 1/2 the time, the music distracts our child only until the suction begins. The motor is noisy, but it works really well. In response to one of the reviewers: you cannot expect a child to sit still and enjoy while you invade his/her nostrils and limit his/her movement. Any normal child would protest that, be it the hospital-type aspirator or the most high-tech device. The bottom line is that this gadget makes a parent's job a lot easier and having a clear collection cup is very useful in actually seeing what comes out of your child's congested nose. We found that if you block the other nostril while using nasalclear or the aspirator on the other gets the most fluid out. I would highly recommend this device.
Customer Review: Easy to loose parts but effective. Summary: 3 Stars
We bought this immediately after our son had RSV and was hospitalized. It is much more effective and quicker than using just the plan "bulb" shaped nose sucker. My biggest complaint is that there are quite a few pieces involved when cleaning it. There is also a very thin "o" ring that MUST be there for the item to work but it slipped out and went down the drain within the first week we owned it. Without that ring, the product is useless and they do not sell a replacement. We probably could have gone to a hardware store to get a new one - but opted to just buy a second unit. My son loved playing with it to hear the music and quickly lost a piece of the new one... Very functional, but too easy to lose the pieces. Now that we have baby #2 - we bought a different brand of the same type of thing.
Make sure you use plenty of saline solution in the baby's nose and get it over as quickly as possible - they still hate it, regardless of how well it works.
Customer Review: My son is terrified of it! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this when my 10mo got his first cold. I was struggling to use the bulb aspirators, and it seemed like he would wail every time I came near him with one. I thought the automatic one would be a lot easier and quicker, and that the music, as promised, would distract my baby.
It makes a really loud whirring noise, though, and the loud nursery rhymes it plays don't cover the sound up. The suction didn't seem to be as strong as I was expecting, and it took a lot longer to accomplish what I could in a few seconds with a bulb. But worst of all, my son was completely terrified of it. When the music started, he would whimper and cry like he only does when he's really frightened, and it took a long time to calm him down afterwards. He wouldn't even play with it when I offered; he just stared at it warily and clung to me. I finally went back to the bulb, with a new appreciation for it.
This was a waste of $20 for me.
Customer Review: Doesn't replace bulb aspirator Summary: 3 Stars
After using this for about 2 months on our now 6-month old, we are glad that we have this available to us, but the good old hospital bulb aspirator does a better job most of the time. This is because the bulb creates a short, high-velocity suction that causes the rush of air to pull along whatever is "down there" (or is it "up there"?), whereas the battery-operated unit has a constant, low-speed suction that only sucks in what the tip actually contacts.
There is at least one situation where this is an advantage - it worked much better than the bulb when she had a very runny nose due to a cold. In this case, the constant suction really kept pulling out more mucus, whereas the bulb could only suck a little each time.
So overall, we are happy to have another option, but it isn't usually the best tool for the job.
Customer Review: Great little nose cleaner. Summary: 4 Stars
Got this for my 22 month old daughter this winter, which has been a really cold a rough one for our family with all the colds. We got a manual bulb aspirator, but that was a waste of money. We tried this and it worked great. It suck the goo right out of her nose and she likes the 12 different tunes it plays. When the mucus is sticky, it is hard to get and requires more cleaning during use. The sucking power seems right. A little more power would benefit. I should come with some little brush or pipe cleaner to help clean out the tip. We use tooth picks. We really hope this thing lasts, as we find it useful. The one from Bebesounds seems to be the same as sold under the Graco name. We also saw the aspirator that connects to a vacuum cleaner, and really didn't want to have our child's nose cleaned by a vacuum cleaner.
