Baby Products Reviews of Bébésounds Angelcare Deluxe Movement Sensor with Sound MonitorCustomer Review: The Best Baby Monitor Ever! Summary: 5 Stars
Before our baby was born, my wife and I were looking at baby monitors at different stores. I decided to check on Amazon to look at the reviews for the different brands. Most of the models sold in the usual stores had horrible reviews on Amazon. After reading things about loud static and short life-span, I saw the Bebesounds Angelcare monitor. The reviews on Amazon praised this model on sound quality. The Amazon description mentioned the movement sensor and the temperature display. Based on the reviews, I purchased it. I had my doubts when I opened it, but after our baby started sleeping in his crib, I realized that this model is worth the money. The sound is really clear. There isn't the constant hum of static issuing from the speaker that I've heard in other brands. If you hold the speaker up to your ear, you can hear static, but when it is sitting on the table right next to my recliner, I don't hear the static at all. This monitor has so many functions, which is nice because you can tailor it to suit your needs. It has an optional sound activation, so, for example, if there is a fan in the baby's room, or air conditioner, or anything that creates noise, the sensitivity of the sound activation can be adjusted so that the system isn't continually pushing white noise through the speaker and only activates for louder sounds, i.e. the sound of your baby crying, cooing or coughing. The volume of the speaker can easily be adjusted on the parents unit. Another nice feature is a level indicator for the intensity of your baby's cries, so even if it us turned down, you can see the level increase from orange (low cries) to yellow (medium cries) to red (loud cries).
The motion detector works really well, too. At first, our baby would only sleep in his car seat, but after he grew out of that phase, the motion detector was nice. The sensor is placed underneath the mattress, directly under the spot where your baby sleeps, so that it detects his breathing. Our baby moves around now, but it still works. The sensitivity has to be adjusted on this, also. There are many functions for the motion detector. The monitor can be set to sound an alarm if it doesn't detect motion for 20 seconds. (The alarm on the parents unit can be an audible alarm, or a vibration, or both.) The base also chirps when it doesn't detect movement, which stimulates the baby, but doesn't wake him/her up. The monitor can be set to make a ticking sound every time it detects motion. There is a pendulum icon on the display that moves back and forth when it detects motion.
Another feature I like about this is the temperature display. The large temperature display on the parents unit is nice, because you can easily see it from across the room. You can set high and low temperatures, and if the temperature in the baby's room goes above or below these set points, an alarm goes off.
Another nice feature is that the parents unit can run off of included rechargeable batteries. While it is in its dock, it recharges and is powered by the electricity from the outlet. It's nice to be able to take the unit with you, though, and not have to leave it plugged in. Another setting for the parents unit can sound an alarm if the unit gets out of range of the base. If it didn't have an alarm for this, you could walk out of range without knowing, and without alarm, you wouldn't know it because the speaker would have remained quiet.
All in all, this model is definitely worth the money. I think it would have been worth the price just for the sound quality. But with all the other features, I can sleep a lot easier knowing that if the room gets too hot or too cold, or if our baby stops breathing, I will instantly know.
Customer Review: Wonderful Piece of Mind!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I always worried about my son when he was sleeping but for the first few months he slept in our room in a cradle and I constantly would hear him sigh or take a big breathe or move so I always knew he was fine. But come time to put him in his own crib in his own room down the hall, I started panicking! I was almost having anxiety attacks because I was so worried. We know someone who lost their perfectly healthy 9 month old son to SIDS so that was always in the back of my mind at night. I told my husband about this and we both agreed we didn't care about the price, it had to be bought.
We bought the set with the 2 units. In hindsight, seems like a waste of extra money. One of the monitors never worked so we've only ever used one and I really don't see us ever needing the second. The movement sensor can be extremely sensitive. About a week after we got it, I was trying to show my grandma how it would go off without my son in there and it never did. Confused, I was almost regretting the purchase. Then later my husband and I figured out the problem. I had the sensitivity set to the highest setting and it was really windy that day - like 80 mph winds. We have a 3 year old house with double pane windows and the crib is on the opposite side of the room. The TINY bit of draft that was coming in was being detected by the monitor and that's why the alarm never went off without the baby in it. So I reset the sensitivity to the lowest and later that night when we put him in it, it went off and he was breathing and sleeping just fine while the alarm for "no movement" was going off. So we had to find the right setting (out of 1-5, I think we settled on 2).
The parent's monitor will first vibrate and beep once at 15 seconds of non-movement and then 5 seconds later at 20 seconds of non-movement, the full alarm will go off. We had 2 false alarms and one real alarm. Let me tell you, the very second that first beep went off, my husband and I flew out of our seats and were running full speed to my son's room!! We were there before the 20 second alarm went off. It is the worst feeling ever as a parent! Instead of panicking and shaking him awake, I would put my hand on his stomach to see if it was moving. Twice it was (once was what I mentioned above) but once I think the alarm really did save him. He was 10 months old and had bronchiolitis and was having a very hard time breathing - needed a breathing machine 3x a day and everything. We were watching tv, heard the first beep, flew in his room and when I flung open the door and threw my hand on his chest he took in a HUGE breath like he hadn't been breathing. You know the kind - someone's under water for a long time holding their breath and when they reach the surface they take a huge gasping breath. That's what he did. He was 10 months old!!! He had gone to bed that night at 9, the alarm went off at 9:45 and he didn't wake up the next morning til 8 am. We never would've checked on him because he always slept through the night. Can you imagine!? Even if that hadn't happened, the monitor was worth every penny just for the piece of mind that he was ok and I could get a good night's rest.
My only complaint would be the sound aspect of the monitor. It was always too low even on the highest setting. When we were watching tv or asleep, we never would hear the sound on it. Instead we used our video monitor for sound and this monitor for the movement alarm. So we always had 2 monitors when he went to sleep but we didn't mind.
I would HIGHLY recommend this to any parent. I always tell new mom and dad's about it and how wonderful it helped us all sleep... ;)
Customer Review: Great even if the alarm never sounds Summary: 5 Stars
Originally I registered for a sound monitor. I figured that would be a sufficient way to keep track of the baby while he was asleep and let me know when he was awake. About a month into motherhood (our son is now 5 months old), our concerns and fears about SIDS grew, and with research we found this monitoring system. We had already been doing everything else to try to keep our son safe -- sleep sacks, "back to sleep", keeping soft objects and bedding out of his crib, and a breathable bumper.
For us it was simple to install -- it fit under his mattress in the bassinet and after placing a piece of plywood between the springs of his convertible crib and the crib mattress, it fits in the crib as well. We did not have to make any adjustments to the sensitivity of the movement sensor. I am amazed that the sensor picks up even the slightest movement when our baby is in a deep sleep and his only movement is his breathing.
The displayed information on the actual receiver is very helpful and includes information that it never occurred to me I would want to have, like room temperature, and indicator that lets you know the movement sensor is picking up signals. The sound from the receiver is clear and the volume is easy to set. I can even hear dogs that are barking outside through the transmitter. Depending on how close the receiver is to the transmitter, there can be some feedback.
Other features I like: the night light on the transmitter. It glows a gentle green that illuminates the immediate area enough to see a little. I also like that the receivers are rechargeable and the unit comes with two chargers -- one for each receiver.
When reading parenting guides, many of them talk about SIDS but say that getting a SIDS monitoring system is expensive and they don't recommend it. I beg to differ. Although $130 is not cheap, it was only twice the cost of the original monitor that I registered for. The peace of mind that we purchased with this is so much more valuable. When I wake in the middle of the night, I look over to the receiver and I can see the little pendulum swinging -- knowing that the sensor is detecting my baby's movement. I don't feel the need to go running into the room to see if he is still breathing. I still do spend a lot of time simply watching him sleep, but then many new parents do.
This review is incomplete because thankfully we have not had our alarm go off (except when we have forgotten to turn it off before lifting the baby out of the crib). I can say that the alarm is quite loud and should be enough to startle a baby or bring a parent running.
I hope that I never really have to use all of the functions of this baby monitor and movement sensor, but I am so glad that we have it just in case.
Customer Review: Finally I can get some sleep! Awesome product Summary: 5 Stars
I am a first time mom and my son is 6 1/2 months old. We used to swaddle him and he slept wonderfully (almost 11 hours a night) no problem. Then he started rolling over and we couldn't swaddle him anymore. Problems started there. He is one of those babies that prefers to sleep on his stomach and just would not lie on his back. What's worse is that he would bury his nose right into the mattress so that you couldn't even see it and would resist me if I tried to help him turn his face to the side. At first I tried to turn him over every time he went onto his stomach, to no avail. He fought me even harder. I was so worried that he wouldn't be able to breathe and would suffocate himself with his nose in the mattress. I didn't want to buy another monitor because we already had one that we paid $100+ for that works great. However, after weeks and weeks of getting 2-3 hours of sleep a night I had to give in.
BOY AM I GLAD THAT I DID! THIS PRODUCT WAS A LIFESAVER FOR ME.
Let me say that if you are struggling with the same fears you should get this monitor and save your sanity. I am finally sleeping soundly and my son sleeps so much better because I'm not hanging over the edge of the crib watching his every move, disturbing his sleep. We both sleep soundly now.
This monitor isn't cheap, but I think it is well worth the money. I also like the feature of the temperature monitor because we live in a cold place and in our bedroom it can get down to below 60 degrees at night even though our thermostat is set on 73 (our apartment's heating system doesn't work well at all). This helps me be sure that our space heater is keeping it within a temperature range that is appropriate for the baby.
I was surprised when I took the unit out of the box that the sensor pad is so small (about 12 x 12" more or less); I didn't think that it would work, but so far we've had no problems and we've had it for about a week. Also, don't waste your money buying the "board" that they sell to put under the monitor. From what I understand it is a waste of money and you can get something just as good at your local hardware store for much less. I already had a board very similar that is working just fine for us.
I am well pleased with the product....but definitely make sure that you turn off the sensor before removing the baby from the crib or the alarm will go off and it is loud. Great product....thank you, thank you, thank you for inventing this.
Customer Review: I love this monitor! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this monitor! I am a NICU mom who's first baby came home on a medical grade apnea monitor for apnea of prematurity. This product is the next best thing.
This monitor is surprisingly sensitive to the slightest movement. I have it under a mattress, mattress pad, fitted mattress sheet, waterproof mattress cover, AND an inclined sleep positioner! The directions were very clear and the device was very easy to set up. The range on the receivers (parent devices) is excellent even in the 'dead zones' of our house where our cordless phones don't work. The receivers not only give very clear sound but also show the temperature of the room. The receivers also have a sturdy little clip on the back so you can clip it to your shirt and walk around hands free. Oh and the receivers give you a warning when the batteries start to go, it beeps once every 15 seconds or so. I also love the little night light feature on the transmitter. It's bright enough that you can see several feet pretty clearly but not so bright to light the whole room. The wires that connect the pad (that goes under the baby mattress) to the transmitter are a decent length so you don't have to worry if you want to set the transmitter on a high bureau near the crib. The receivers hold their charge for a long time and use rechargable batteries (included with the product). The settings are adjustable and its easy enough to turn features on or off but I left the factory settings which work very well.
It is a very expensive monitor but SIDS scares me silly. Having experienced my first son almost dieing but for the apnea monitor (he was discharged from the NICU with an apnea monitor) telling us that he stopped breathing, I needed the next best thing for my second (my 2nd is a full term baby). I highly recommend this fantastic product (for full term babies, of course use a medical grade apnea monitor for wee ones who need them) despite the excessive cost. In my humble opinion, if you have concerns about SIDS then this monitor is worth every penny.
NOTE: Look for the same product but sold directly by amazon.com! It's available at the same price as this seller offers it but with super saver shipping = no charge for shipping!
