Baby Products Reviews of BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor w. Sound Monitor w. Two Parents' Units

Customer Review: Core functionality - five stars; Other "features" - one star
Summary: 4 Stars

Ultimately I bought this as a breathing monitor... and it works perfectly. We had two false alarms and both were when my son was sleeping deeply (very light breaths) after having wedged himself all the way to one end of the crib. As the instructions (and others) have pointed out... you will need a piece of wood or something sturdy to set it on under the crib. Ours was set at the perfect sensitivity straight out of the box, but you should run some tests with the baby out of the crib to see if the alarm goes off. I found that if I had the ceiling fan on the highest setting, the vibration was enough to prevent the monitor for working properly. All in all, the breathing monitor functionality (the pad and the alarm unit it connects to) is very easy to set up, and reliable. I wouldn't change a thing.

However the other advertised features seemed to be poorly designed afterthoughts. The tic funtion is annoying in the room... I'd love to just be able to have the parent unit lights flick instead of having to make it tic and then "see" the tics through as audio parts of the monitor. Speaking of audio monitor, this one is very staticy and lacks the feature of others (like radio silence unless there's noise on the other end). I already had an excellent baby monitor when I bought this so I just continued to use that.

Overall, I think $100 for just the breathing monitor functionality was totally worth it for my piece of mind (and therefore sleep). I'd buy it again (although I'd also by my other sound only monitor as well).

Customer Review: The BEST Monitor!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using this monitor from the first day we bought our baby home. My husband tested it first thinking maybe it was just detecting weight and not actual motion. So he put a heavy doll in the cradle (doll weighed about 6 pounds). The alarm went off after a few seconds.
We were able to use it under the cradle mattress for the first 2 months. Even though the baby was right next to my bed, I was able to sleep peacefully knowing the motion detector was monitoring his breathing.
When we moved him into his crib in his own room, again, I had piece of mind knowing the motion detector worked! My son is a tummy sleeper so I was pretty nervous about SIDS the first few months. The alarm only has gone off once while he was in the crib and that was only because he scooted too far off the motion pad. It also is a little staticy at times, but it's worth it to have this monitor!
(Update - We used the monitor with the motion detector pad until I knew my son was past the "SIDS" possible stage. I removed the motion pad at that point because he was a restless sleeper and would often move off the pad and make the alarm go off. I continued to use just the monitor until he was old enough not to need to be monitored anymore. The cords on the parent units did give me trouble at the end. They would short out and turn off, but this was after almost 3 years of steady use. Still overall, we were very pleased with the monitor and felt it was definitely worth the money to have the piece of mind of knowing our baby was sleeping safely!)

Customer Review: Best Baby Product!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this monitor when my 8 week old wouldn't sleep more than a few minutes on his back. It was really a last resort!! He slept for hours on his tummy, but I was petrified to leave his side. This monitor gave me such peace of mind. I was skeptical that it would really be sensitive enough to measure his breath...but IT DID! I recommend it to every expectant mother that I encounter. My sister's son had reflux and would lapse in breathing. She was delirious by the time he was 4 months because she was afraid to go to sleep. This monitor could literally be a life saver. We didn't have any of the difficulties setting it up like those mentioned in some of the other reviews. It's perfectly loud enough, as well. Once or twice we picked up a neighbor talking, and sometimes when the unit in the baby's room is off, the receiver in our room does this funny clicking thing (I like to think it's calling out for its friend:-)...but all-in-all, we love it! Now that my son is rolling all over the bed the monitor will beep (even if just once) when he wiggles into the corner of the crib and is sleeping really deeply/breathing softly . It usually detects his breath after the first warning tone without going into full alarm mode, probably because he stirs in his sleep from the noise, but even those alarms are shocking because the mattress monitor is so sensitive it detects lifting and resting of a finger on the crib railing! Can't say enough good things about this product! If I could only have one baby gear item, this would be it.

Customer Review: So grateful to have this monitor
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this monitor! Now that my baby is sleeping through the night (WOOHOO!) in her own room, I keep the monitor in the "sensor only" mode most of the time. The nursery is right next to our bedroom and I leave both doors open so I can hear the baby if she starts fussing or crying in the middle of the night, but every little peep doesn't wake me up. Being a first time mom, I was surprised at how much noise a little baby can make while she's fast asleep. With the sensor mode on, I know that an alarm will go off if the baby stops breathing (a terrifying thought, but I'd rather be cautious), so I really don't need to hear her sleeping noises with the sound receiver.

I do use the sound receiver if I'm on the other side of the house (after she goes to sleep but before I go to sleep at night) so I can hear if she wakes up. The only weird thing about the sound monitor is that it will pick up somebody else's monitor sounds if a nearby neighbor uses the same monitor. However, there are two channels, so you can use the other channel if that happens (we have a neighbor who uses channel A and we use channel B).

A related recommendation if you are a cautious parent and concerned about SIDS - get sleep sacks! They're great for a baby born during the colder months of the year because you can keep them really warm without using a blanket (another safety concern). You zip the fleece sack over the baby's pajamas. I use the "Halo" sleep sacks which are also available through Amazon.

Customer Review: Buy this immediately - oh my gosh, what a life saver!
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes, I'll admit upfront that the buzzing is annoying (and if you set the volume too low, it doesn't register any sounds in the parent unit at all). But I can deal with that because of the other benefits (although I hope the manufacturer will improve that aspect). I had a sound-only monitor (great quality) w/my 1st child, but he slept on his side so I didn't worry as much, plus I didn't even know this thing existed. My 2nd child has acid reflux and as a result, immensely prefers sleeping on her tummy. In fact, we spent a month waking up EVRY SINGLE HOUR - no lie. When I found out about this, I bought it immediately. This is such a life saver, I would have paid $200 for it. The alarm went off twice in 5 months (of course, I've forgotten to turn it off, and it beeped!). Once she was too far in the corner, and the other time, she really wasn't breathing. The alarm went off, and when I checked on her, her chest wasn't moving at all. I jostled her a little, got her breathing, and went back to bed. It went off again right away. She wasn't breathing again. I pulled her out of bed that time and she woke up. When I put her back down, she was fine. I know babies have irregular breathing patterns, but I'll never know if she would have started breathing again on her own. Why chance it? It doesn't matter if your baby sleeps on his/her back, side or tummy - I don't know why a parent who knows about this monitor wouldn't buy it. It is truly the best purchase I ever made. I would be a company spokesperson, I feel that strongly.
