Baby Products Reviews of BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor w. Sound Monitor w. Two Parents' UnitsCustomer Review: A bit hard to set up, but its worth the peace of mind. NO SIDS with THIS. Summary: 5 Stars
Do you know it's normal for newborns to stop breathing in their sleep? Most babies have the mechanism in their brain that turns the switch back on, to breathe again. However, some newborns do not have this switch. This is why there is SIDS. Also, did you know....if your baby did stop breathing and you, the parent, knew they stopped breathing-just going and picking them up or even touching them, will also trigger the brain to breathe again (as long as it is right away, as the alarm sounds).
This monitor is worth every penny. We only paid $90 at our local Babies R Us. We did have to call around to a few locations to finally find one of these.
With my first child, I never got any sleep. She was born a few weeks early and was ill due to acid reflex, she couldnt keep any milk down. She was a breastfed baby, but was very weak. Back then, I didn't know about this item, I wish I did. My husband and I would take turns to stay up all night with her, to make sure she was always breathing. As a first time mom, SIDS was a scary thing (still is, even with our second baby). I remember being the most tired I had been at any time in my life. Those first months should have been a lot more joyous.
With my second daughter. She was delivered at 35 weeks (preemie) and was a perfectly healthy baby. However, any type of preemie has an increased chance of SIDS. My preemie still thought she was in my womb and would not wake up at all for the first month at home. She was in a sleeping coma. She wouldn't even want to wake up to eat. I was very worried about her 20 hours of sleeping all day/night. The first few days home I would watch her sleep all night and never sleep myself. By the 3rd day of this, I couldn't handle the no sleep thing, so I read about this item and had to buy it.
LIFE SAVER PRODUCT ALERT!! Get this! It's worth every penny.
Once my husband brought it home, we started to set it up right away. Our crib didn't have a hard base under the mattress, so we measured the crib and went down to Home Depot, to have a slice of ply board/wood cut out to put under the mattress and above the frame/box (the wood piece only cost $5). You MUST have a sturdy bottom to get accurate readings. Once the monitor is set up, you'll need to adjust the level of sensitivity. It may be a bit tricky at first, but only should take a few adjustments. Also, you can have a constant ticking sound on, which is the baby breathing. Dont worry, you do not have to have this ticking sound on, just to know your baby is breathing. For a test run, without the ticking sound on, you may need to have your baby sleep for a nap, then take your baby out, after the nap, without turning or touching the monitor/alarm. Once you walk out of the room, the alarm should go off (because its not picking up any movement). You will know, the alarm is working, if the alarm is sounding, once your baby has been removed from crib. Be aware, if you are walking near the monitor, it is so sensitive, that it picks up footsteps, so the monitor will not trigger if are moving all around the crib.
THANK GOD, I found this item. There were a few times in the first few months, my daughter did stop breathing and the alarm went off. Even though, it's most likely, she would have started breathing on her own. The sense of knowing and the peace of mind is WORTH having this item. I love this alarm. It's a life saver.
Customer Review: Well Worth It! Summary: 5 Stars
As first time parents, we worried about everything! My brother had a monitor that sensed movement, but he lived in the UK and the plugs aren't the same. So we began searching for something similar that was appropriate for the US. We found this monitor and purchased it with money that family had given us during the baby shower. I definately think you should get the two parent unit. Yes, it is portable and you don't always have to plug it in. But if you don't keep it plugged in, then you'll waste your money on batteries. It just makes sense to get the double unit.
Things I love about it:
*I don't have to obsess about looking in our baby when all is quiet, and seems to good to be true. Because the monitor is so sensitive, it will go off if she stops moving/breathing. TRUST ME!
*The sensor pad is small enough to use anywhere. We cut a piece of MDF and stuck it in the bottom of the bassinet in her Pack'n'Play when we travelled. It worked perfectly!
*You can plug it in or use batteries. The power goes out alot where we live, so its piece of mind to know that it is always going to work.
*You can use it as a monitor for just sound. Often, the baby will fall asleep in the 'papasan chair & I can set-up the monitor next to her while I run downstairs to toss in a load of laundry with the speaker.
*The speakers (angels)work all over the house and outside; they have a great range.
*The 'angels' have a light range:Sometimes I don't want to hear every little sound, so I put the volume down to practically off. But because I can see the lights, I can tell how important it is for me to go in and take care of her.
*The monitor tics: When she slept in the room with us, we could see that everything was alright because the cloud was always flashing. As a new parent, in the middle of the night, that relieved alot of panic, and we were able to move her out into her own room with confidence.
The annoying bits:
*I forget to turn off the monitor 'cloud' very often and I set off the alarm. The reality is, that is what it is designed for. It's my own personal fault and not the fault of the product.
*Most of the time, I do have to turn off the 'angel' before I can turn off the 'cloud'. Sometimes it whistles, sometimes there is static. Either way,it's noisy. The upside is that there is no chance of me leaving it on all day for no reason.
*Some appliances do make it click. We just don't run the washing machine and dishwasher at night. That solved that.
*You do have to set the sensor pad in the right position. A few times we put her down in different spots in her crib and the alarm went off. We solved that by putting her down in a sleep positioner, so she is always in the same spot and she can't roll off of it.
She is four months now, and I can't imagine life without it. Despite the annoying bits I give it a perfect score because it does exactly what it is supposed to and has never failed. The one time it went off that was a real situation, I thanked my lucky stars. All the false alarms in the world, which we have solved the reasons for now, couldn't make me change my mind.
Customer Review: Great Monitor for Peace of Mind Summary: 5 Stars
We have used it with the movement sensor for my son's first year and without the movement sensor for the last 6 months. (My son is now 18 months old.) We love this monitor for several reasons.
1. The monitor with movement sensor can be used in a basinet, portable crib, or a regular crib. Just make sure you put a plywood board under the sensor pad if the bottom of the basinet or crib is soft or just a spring base. This helps prevent false alarms. The sensor also packs easily in a suitcase for travel.
2. The monitor has a good range and is clear. We have a large house and yard. This monitor works at the complete opposite end of the house and throughout our yard.
3. Our son was a preemie and this monitor gave us the piece of mind to sleep at night, especially with the fear of SIDS. It truly detects movement and not just weight. (We tested it with a large dictionary and the sensor went off after a few seconds.) It picks up your child's movement from breathing even in the sounded state of sleep. When our son started rolling over and became a tummy sleeper (even though we put him to bed on his back) the monitor was the only reason I slept at night.
4. You can use this sensor in several modes. It has one mode that give an audible beep with each movement as well as detecting sounds from the nursery (for extra piece of mind and so you know it is working if you are really nervous), another mode that detects movement (and sounds) and sets off an alarm if baby does not move for 15 seconds, and the last mode lets you shut off the movement sensor and use it just as a sound monitor (great for an older baby or toddler and you don't need to buy a new monitor). We also liked that before the alarm went off, it gave a warning beep. This gave us time to go in and check on our son, before the alarm went off and woke him up. We had no false alarms with this monitor when our son was an infant, and a few when he started really moving in his sleep because he would roll off the monitor pad. It just took a little experimentation with pad placement to fix this situation.
5. Baby slept better with this monitor because we were not constantly going into his room to check on him and accidentally waking him up.
6. The monitor also has a light display that lights up more lights (in a row) when your child makes more noise. I can visually look at the monitor in the middle of the night and tell by the display if he is sleeping soundly.
7. The monitor has two bands (a & b). You can switch bands on both the nursery and parent unit if one band is getting a lot of static or interference. If you have two small children you can also use two monitors, one set to each band.
We love this monitor so much that we are planning on purchasing a second unit before the birth of our second child.
Customer Review: The best for the worry first time moms!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I usually don't do this but since these reviews were the reason I bought this, I wanted to share my thoughts so that other first time worried moms could benefit as well. I made it through the first 5 months of my son's life without this....I wish I would have known sooner. I have been extremely worried about SIDS. It is the magazines and books, etc that make people like me a basket case. I would wake up probably around 10 times or more in the middle of the night to check on my son. It wasn't until I woke up one night and found him on his stomach sleeping that I started to really freak out. He was totally fine and breathing good but I wasn't sure whether I should flip him or leave him. So I went on line to investigate and came across a note from a reader stating some about this Angelcare monitor. So I start to investigate this more. Once I read about this, I was sold. This will exactly solve my worst nightmare..that my son would roll over and stop breathing. I sat for hours reading all of the on-line reviews since I already had a monitor and wasn't sure if buying another one would be wise. I opted to spend the money so that I could get some much needed sleep. I even ordered it next day delivery since I felt I couldn't wait another day. The first night of using it, was the best night sleep that I have had since my son was born. The monitor quality was thousands of times better than our other monitor which was an extra bonus to the motion sensor. I could even hear him breathing at night on the monitor. That was so reassuring that I have narrowed my trips to his room to only around 1 or so now. The only thing that I did not get from the reviews was the thing about the tic sounds. I thought that this would have been great to hear this on the monitor for reassurance. But I did not know that this same tic sound would come from the base in his room. Thus, he has to listen to the same tic throughout the night if you want to hear it on your monitor. After thinking about the design, it makes complete sense but I did not know that upfront. However, using it without the tics still gives me the assurance I needed. If you still feel the need to make sure of the movements, there is a green light on the monitor that blinks with his movements. I can't stress on how much this product has helped me!!!! I always felt that my son would be fine if he slept on his tummy but now I have the assurance!! I would definetely recommend this to any other parents that need a little assurance at night. I wake up now after a full nights rest and I feel like a better mother because of this.
Customer Review: Without this monitor I would not be able to sleep. Summary: 5 Stars
Summary: If you are a worry wart - buy this product!!
My daughter is now four months old and it's time to give credit where credit is due and review what I will call the "best of the best" baby products I have so generously received.
Number ONE - numero uno - la premiere un - the "Angel Care" baby monitor. It is by the grace of this wonderful piece of machinery that I am sitting at my computer right now instead of hovering over my 4 month old making sure she is breathing. Yeah, we did the 4 month vaccinations last week, yep, she has a fever at this very moment. But because this thing is soooo well made, I have piece of mind enough to leave the room and take care of a few things around the house. Because I am so grateful for this product, this is the first thing I'm doing.
I slept with Rebecca her first 3 months of life in my bed, transitioning her to her crib was a heartbreaking process for me, but I knew that once she started rolling side to side (3 months) and then back to front and front to back (3.5 months) that the safest place for her was in her own crib. I don't think I would have been able to put her in her crib if it were not for this product - I am too much of a nervous Nellie! But even in the darkest watch of the night when I was staring at both monitors at either end of my bed, playing in stereo - I told myself "go to sleep you idiot" because if the baby stopped breathing, the monitors would wake me up.
I wouldn't be so sure if it hadn't happened the third time I used the monitor. One theory of SIDS is that the baby simply "forgets" to breathe without Mommy acting as pacemaker like she did when baby was still in the womb. Well, I can't say if Rebecca would have started breathing on her own or not because I ran in there like the house was on fire and rubbed her belly. She took a deep breath and went right back to sleep. Of course I didn't - but she did. It happened one more time when the monitor alarm went off and sensed she had stopped breathing for a little too long and by the time I got in there she fussed around herself and went back to sleep.
I trust this product completely. It even has battery backups in the transmitter and receiver(s) just in case of a power outage (something I kept reminding myself of during another one of my late night transition to the crib worry-fests). If I did not have the angel care monitor - I would not sleep - period.
This monitor is worth the extra money all day - and all night long!
