Description of BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor w. Sound Monitor w. Two Parents' UnitsThe Angel Care Movement Sensor with Sound Monitor detects your baby's slightest movements, even while she sleeps. While it may seem that your baby is perfectly still when she is sleeping, she really isn't. The under-the-mattress Sensor Pad detects your baby's slightest movements. If your baby goes absolutely still for 20 seconds, the Sensor Pad sends a signal to the Nursery Unit which sounds an alarm alerting you to check your baby. If you are out of the baby's room, the two portable Parents' Units (Sound Monitor) will pick up the alarm as well as other nursery sounds. In addition, the two Parent Units give you the flexibility of always leaving one in your bedroom while moving the second unit to the room you are in while your baby is sleeping. Your crib must have a hard flat surface. If it does not, just place a piece of masonite or a board under the mattress and place the Sensor Pad on top of the masonite and under the mattress. You may order the masonite directly from Graco. The Angel Care Movement Sensor with Sound Monitor requires 12AAA batteries, which are not included. There are 3 AC adapters included. Parents of preemies and infants at increased risk of SIDS lose a lot of sleep wondering if their babies are still breathing. Even parents of healthy babies experience this kind of anxiety. With its movement sensor pad, sound transmitter, sound lights, and movement detecting "ticking" sound, The Angelcare Movement Sensor with Sound Monitor can take away virtually all this anxiety. Three Functions, Infinite Peace of Mind The Angelcare Movement Sensor has three modes of use, enabling parents to use the sensor/sound monitor well into toddlerhood and beyond, if desired. With the Sound & Movement function, you can hear your baby?s sounds, see sound lights, and hear a "tic" sound with every movement the baby makes. If no movement is detected, the "tic" will stop and after 20 seconds the alarm will sound. In the Tic Off mode you will not hear the ticking sound with every movement. However, you will still hear the baby?s sounds and see sound lights, and your baby?s movement is still being detected. An alarm will still sound if absolutely no movement is detected for 20 seconds. And finally, with Sound Only, the movement sensor is disabled, but you will still be able to hear your baby?s sounds and see sound lights. In this mode, the Angelcare functions as a regular sound monitor. For many parents, just being able to hear the sighs and squeaks of the newest member of the family is reassurance enough. For those who need more input, for whatever reason, the additional sensory features of the Angelcare can be lifesaving. How the Angelcare Movement Sensor Works A sensor pad is placed under the center of baby?s crib mattress on a flat, hard surface. The sensor pad cord passes underneath the mattress entirely, exiting the crib in the corner. It is then plugged into the jack of the nursery unit transmitter. The nursery unit can be plugged into an electrical outlet or it can operate with four AAA batteries. The same goes for the parents? unit receivers (two parents? units included). Turn the parents? units on by selecting either channel A or B. Make sure they?re set to the same channel as the nursery unit. Set the nursery unit to the desired mode (Sound & Movement, Tic Off, or Sound Only). You may leave one parents? unit in your bedroom and carry the other with you as you move about the house and yard. Now, depending on the function you?ve selected, you?ll be able to keep track of your baby?s every sound and movement. Sound Lights Indicator lights on an LED sound bar (on the parents? unit) allow you to "see" your baby?s sounds if background noises prevent you from hearing baby. As baby?s sounds get louder, more lights illuminate. Optional "Tic" Feature When the nursery unit is set to Sound & Movement, it will continuously tick with every movement your baby makes. If no movement is detected by the sensor pad beneath baby?s mattress, the ticking will stop. Movement Indicator Light The movement indicator light is located only on the nursery unit. When the nursery unit is set to Sound & Movement or Tic Off, the movement indicator light will flash green with baby?s every movement. The flashing green light will let you know that movement is being detected, which will allow you to check on a sleeping baby in the dark. False Alarms False alarms are possible with the Angelcare Movement Sensor, especially if instructions have not been followed to a "t". Make sure to turn off the nursery unit after you?ve taken baby out of the crib. Also, once baby starts being more mobile, she may roll right off the sensor pad area of the mattress. A troubleshooting guide in the instruction manual gives other solutions to false alarms. What?s in the Box Angelcare Movement Sensor includes movement sensor pad, nursery sound monitor, two parents? units, instruction manual, and three AC adapters. Twelve AAA batteries are required (not included).--Emilie Coulter For parents of preemies and babies at greater risk of developing SIDS, the Angelcare Movement Sensor is a lifesaver?literally. A sensor pad goes under baby?s mattress and detects baby?s slightest movements, even if he is sleeping soundly. If the sensor does not pick up any movement for 20 seconds, an alarm sounds over the two portable receivers and alerts parents. Along with the sensor is a traditional baby monitor that transmits all sound from the nursery to the two receivers. The receivers have a range of up to 200 feet and have light indicators that correspond with the noise level. The monitor and receivers have two channels and low battery indicator lights. Each unit can operate either by four "AAA" batteries or AC adapter (two included). This full-spectrum monitoring system is the recipient of numerous awards and is covered by a one-year limited warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde
Baby Products Reviews of BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor w. Sound Monitor w. Two Parents' UnitsCustomer Review: Good monitor; sensor has LOTS of false alarms! Summary: 3 Stars
Our baby is now almost 8 months old and we've been using this monitor since he first slept in his crib by himself at about 7 weeks. We were first time parents and paranoid about SIDS and all that not unlike most new parents, I would presume. We got the Angelcare monitor set due to the movement sensor and pretty good reviews on various sites. We wanted that reassurance that everything was OK when our baby was out of our sight, especially overnight. There are certainly pros & cons to this monitor/sensor so know what you're getting before you buy:
Pros:
* monitor units seem well-made (although plastic, they're not as lightweight and "cheap" feeling as some others)
* limited interference/static - this tends to depend on the monitor's location in your house, nearby electronics, other wireless devices in your home (cordless phones, wireless Internet), neighbors with monitors, etc.; we've had interference issues from time to time, but 90% of the time it's just fine.
* battery life is pretty good if you don't keep it plugged in to an AC outlet 24/7
* both the base unit and at least one of two monitor/parent units has been on almost 24/7 for a good 6 months and all are still going strong
* movement sensor; adjustable movement sensitivity on base unit
Cons:
* LOTS of false alarms that got worse as our baby got older/bigger (more on this below)
* sensor pad is small & does not pick up movement well on edges of crib mattress
* "Tick" sound during movement comes from the base station which can be noisy/distracting to baby
To elaborate on the issue of false alarms: our baby had a bad case of reflux and was on prescription medication and swaddled on a crib wedge for the first few months of life. He was unable to move around the crib and the majority of his body rested on the crib wedge. Interestingly enough, the sensor picked him up pretty well at factory default sensitivity of 2.5 - we had what we thought were false alarms maybe once every week or two. Trust me, that gets you out of bed QUICK! The alarm is loud, but if your baby is a pretty good sleeper & you get it turned off fast enough they may barely wake up...at least it caused little issue with our baby.
Once our baby was getting too big to be swaddled at night and wanting to move the sensor became more of a problem. The alarm started going off almost every night - sometimes more than once. By the time we got into his room (mere seconds, really) the alarm had kind of roused him so we knew he was breathing. Other times the warning beep would cause him to move and prevent the alarm from sounding. This continued for a number of weeks and I did all I could to thoroughly test the sensor by touching the mattress lightly in every possible area, checking that the ceiling fan wasn't affecting anything, adjusting the sensitivity to every number almost to maximum - nothing kept the alarm from sounding at least once a night. We finally got so concerned that we took our baby to the pediatrician and were referred to a pulmonologist to test for sleep apnea. We just didn't know if our baby's breathing was stopping periodically or not - was the alarm waking him up and getting him breathing again? Was it malfunctioning? We had no idea. By this time our baby was about 5 months old.
The pulmonologist told us that it was very, very unlikely our baby had sleep apnea since he was not premature, had no respiratory issues before leaving the hospital or within the first few weeks home, wasn't congested, etc. He had no symptoms other than this alarm going off. It would even go off during his daytime naps sometimes. The doctor had very little positive professional opinion on these home sensor/monitor units. He gave us the choice of going with our faith & turning the sensor off, or having a hospital grade apnea monitor delivered to our home and use it for a week to confirm. We chose the hospital monitor just to put the issue and our worry to rest. If you've not used a hospital apnea monitor it's not something you'd want to do unless it's recommended or you feel it's in everyone's best interest (like in our case). You have to put electrodes on your baby, run the cables through their pajamas, out the crib and into the monitor unit. It monitors respiration, heartrate, etc. Then we worried about the cords running through the crib. Though by that time we had a wireless video camera set up. :) We were told even the hospital grade ones often have false alarms as well due to loose connections, the electrodes coming loose, body oils interfering, etc. We expected alarms to sound and then the doctor would review all the stored data after a week of use to see if they were false or real apnea. We used it for a week and did NOT have a single alarm! None! The doctor reviewed the data and told us to shut off the Angelcare sensor - our baby did not have sleep apnea.
We shut it off that night and have slept well ever since, and so has our baby. It cost us many nights of restless sleep and several hundred dollars to get professional medical confirmation to rule out apnea due to all the false alarms.
So...I'm giving it 3 stars. I give the sensor 1-2 stars, but reading other reviews some customers have positive experience with it. I give the monitor units 3-4 stars since they've been totally reliable for 7-8 months now with the base and at least 1 monitor on almost 24/7. Possibly we just ended up with a faulty sensor unit, but you do see quite a few customers stating false alarms. Granted, I as a parent agree I'd rather have a false alarm from time to time and have the peace of mind. However, ours just got to the point of being rediculous and pushing us to take the step to seek a specialist to rule out or confirm our concerns.
If you buy it, just do so with the right expectations so you won't be surprised or disappointed if it's not perfect.
