Baby Products Reviews of Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker

Customer Review: There is another way.....
Summary: 3 Stars

So my wife and I wanted to make baby food for our wee lass. We started out excited about the Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker and after reading the reviews and getting our hands on it we changed our mind. Simply put there are three BIG problems.
1. It is hard to keep clean especially the reservoir.
2. It has a limited lifespan since all it makes is baby food.
3. It is very expensive for what you get.
Since we were free of the Bebycook we now had some money to spend so I bought a beautiful Mauviel M'Cook 5 Ply Stainless Steel 8 Inch Steamer Insert to cook her food in. Then I bought a restaurant quality 1-quart "Mouli Food Mill" made by L. Tellier to puree her food in. Finally I use the Beaba Multiportion Freezer Tray - Green freezer tray to store her food. Believe it or not the Beaba Babycook cost the same as a Mauviel steamer and a LT Mouli food mill combined, both of which are top of the line dishwasher-safe 18/10 stainless steel cooking masterpieces made in France. After your little one starts eating 'real' food the Beabe Babycook is just a hard to clean useless plastic paperweight made in China. But the steamer and the mouli are both essential kitchen tools that will last a lifetime of steaming broccoli and making home-made apple sauce. Yum...

Customer Review: Every mom needs this!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I ABSOLUTELY love this product, so when I saw that there were 1 and 2 star reviews, I had to write a review for myself. As a first time mom, I had high hopes of making my baby's own baby food, but once I returned to work, I felt as though I wouldn't have the time. Then a coworker recommended the Beaba to me, and I am so glad he did. It is a bit pricey, so I bought a used one, and as one reviewer pointed out, the water reserve did have some brown stuff in it. In order to clean the reserve, I used hot water and a toothbrush and scrubbed it all out. I have NEVER seen any of the brown get into the water after the steaming. Since I bought the item used, it didn't come with the manual, but it is so easy to use, that I didn't need one! After my first use, I was in love. For a full time working mom, this steamer blender makes me feel as though I was able to slave away in the kitchen all day to make the best possible food for my baby. Carrots and potatoes only take about 20 mins to steam, and then maybe 2 mins to blend up, so to all the people who say that it isn't big enough, how much food do you need to make?! I am able to make over 12 ounces at a time. Besides, this means that I can change it up for my little one so she doesn't have to eat the same thing day in and day out. And for all the naysayers out there saying that you get the same results with a blender and steamer, you're right. But you can wash dishes by hand too, or use the dishwasher! To all those on the fence about this product, BUY IT! [...].

Customer Review: Grows with baby
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using the Beaba babycook for about 3 1/2 months now, and this is still my favorite baby item, despite its few drawbacks. YOu can steam in a steamer basket and then just dump your vegetables (or whatever you're steaming), right into the food processor part. It's small enough to keep on the counter, and it does a much better job of pureeing than a blender - especially when baby is little and you want to ensure no chunks. My boys are a little bigger now (9 1/2 months), so I've run into problems with capacity (I have twins) - but I just bought a steamer basket and steam veggies on the stove and use the Beaba if I need to puree the food. I'm not pureeing as much anymore, but I found it is VERY helpful for "soups". My boys are at the in between stage where they can handle a few lumps, but nothing major, and I didn't have the time to chop up the super tiny pieces that would have satisfied me. So instead of pulling out my big food processor, I just use the Beaba to dice the vegetables into small, baby friendly size. I don't recommend it for raw potatoes - it turns mushy quickly (and definitely don't try to make mashed potatoes in here!) Main drawback is size. But after a few stints of all-day cooking and freezing, I found that aside from keeping a small stash of freezer food for their dad to use, it's just as easy to prepare food every few days and keep it in the fridge. Also, as babies get bigger, you can start cooking rice and pasta, adding it to the vegetables.

Customer Review: I have a solution to the black mold problem in the Beaba!
Summary: 3 Stars

Like most of you, I noticed the black mold problem and was horrified. I tried the vinegar solution to no avail. Then, I got to thinking....Why not try CLR! CLR is a green solution to rid your home or coffeemaker of calcium, lime or rust. I figured if it is safe to use in a coffeemaker then, why not give it a try!
It WORKED!! I put in about a 1/2 cup of the product (undiluted)into the water reservoir, let it sit a few minutes and THEN scrubbed the inside with a toothbrush. Keeping the CLR in the reservoir, I ran the unit to steam, the black mold particles started pouring out.
Then, I ran it several times with plain water. Particles kept coming. I took a look inside with a flashlight and after a few more touch ups with the toothbrush, the reservoir looked BRAND NEW.
For safe keeping I ran it again with more fresh water.
In the future, whenever you use your baby food maker, I would recommend emptying out the residual water (this is what caused the mold problem in the first place) then re-attaching the food basket/processor/bowl with the lid on and running the steamer with the LID OFF. You will be able to see the water bubbling, turning to vapor and then the reservoir will be completely dry. This step is KEY as you want to will ensure that your water reservoir is completely dry while you store it. Once this is done, you can re-attach the lid. It's also a good idea that you make sure your food basket/processor/bowl is dry as well.
Hope this helps!

Customer Review: An efficient appliance that doesn't take up too much counter space
Summary: 4 Stars

Through recommendations from friends and an informal cost-benefit analysis (j/k) I bought this item. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the price. Nice concept in a convenient package that is aesthetically pleasing and holds the Williams-Sonoma name...but I still think the price is jacked-up.

I am a first time mom, and I was excited to start whipping up some organic fruits and veggies for my daughter. I resisted buying the Babycook at first thinking a stove-top steamer and my Magic Bullet would suffice. I am embarrassed to say how long it took me, so let's just say after making a batch of carrots, peas, and corn, the excitement was over. It was so tedious! And so many dishes to wash. The next day I bought the Babycook and made twice the amount of food in half the time, with very little cleanup. I'm ok with the amount of food it produces since I don't like to make big batches due to freezer space. The blade is very strong and does a very good job on hard items like the skins of beans and peas. My Bullet would still leave little chunks that were potential choking hazards. I make a week's worth of baby food, and when the machine is not in use I let the water chamber and other parts air dry. I don't think it is very useful for reheating because it takes a long time and sometimes the food comes out too moist (but this might be user error).

So far the product has been a pleasure to use and has made my life a whole lot easier.
