Baby Products Reviews of Baby Cubes Pk of 8x 40ml/1ozCustomer Review: You need this Summary: 5 Stars
We were still in the hospital and had been parents about half a day when we told someone we planned to puree our own food so that we didn't have to pay for all of those Gerber jars. Someone told us about putting baby food in ice cube trays, the advantage being that you could freeze as many squares worth of food as you need and it would stay fresh, then as the baby gets older, when you go to feed him or her you grab x squares of food.
Of course, as soon as we'd received that piece of advice, someone was telling us otherwise -- that you need to somehow cover the ice cube trays so that bacteria doesn't get in there, to prevent freeze burn, and besides that, it's hard to break out just a couple of cubes from an ice cube tray. You can twist and pop an ice cube tray but you never know how many are going to come loose at once. Plus it's not like an automatic ice maker and you can just dispense a few squash cubes; you need something to carry them in.
This product solves almost all of the concerns of the original ice cube tray suggestion. We still puree sweet potato or green beans and put it in the little containers. It's fresher than the Gerber stuff and less expensive, with no preservatives. Since each cube comes out of the tray and has a lidded plastic container, it's convenient to grab a handful of them for a day trip and then pull them out and use them as needed. As they defrost in the car, I can even feed our daughter right out of the plastic container.
Now of course, none of this guarantees your kid is actually going to EAT what you've prepared for them, but that's not the fault of the containers; that's just how babies are sometimes.
Customer Review: Not the best way to store frozen baby food Summary: 2 Stars
I got these as a gift along with the Fresh Baby Trays at my baby shower. I made my own baby food and put it into these cubes, and then froze them. When I first opened the cubes up, I noticed they were dirty and desperately needed washing. The containers aren't perfectly clear to begin with but I was surprised at how dirty they were right out of the package. The cube lids do not stay on all the way either. Even if you don't overfill the cubes as the instructions say, the lids still do not seal all the way and there is a gap that food could spill out of (if it was in the fridge). I had trouble with the lids completely popping open too and had to put Scotch tape on them to keep them closed. The cubes also do not stay on the white tray and tip over and fall off very easily. Also, you must defrost them in the microwave to get the frozen food out. I think you are better off buying the Fresh Baby trays. These are very high-quality trays, where the thick rubber lid stays on and the frozen food pops right out for storage in a zip-lock bag (just like regular ice cubes). Don't waste your money on these flimsy individual cubes!
Customer Review: Very useful though slightly flimsy Summary: 4 Stars
I was given 1 set of these as a gift at my baby shower and recently started using them as my son starts to explore solids. I've only used them for purees (not breastmilk) and love that they're very clear so I can tell what's in them. I haven't had any issues with them not standing up in the freezer and find that they defrost/warm very quickly if placed in warm water for a few minutes. The biggest perk for me is that I can make 3-4 servings of homemade puree, pop them in the freezer then use the individual cubes to mix & match what I send with my son to daycare. I seem to use food up within 2-3 weeks of preparation and haven't experienced any freezer burn.
I have noticed that the lids don't always seal, but the problem seems to be that food has gotten on the rim or lid or the cube has been overfilled. If I'm careful when filling them, I'm fine.
I plan to buy more so I can keep a better assortment of foods frozen at one time but think I might get the 2oz variety to keep up with my son's appetite.
Customer Review: Goes from freezer to fridge to diaper bag Summary: 5 Stars
These baby food cubes are awesome. They work great for storing rice cereal(if you make your own), and purees. I can mix up a batch, spoon it into several cubes, leave one or two in the fridge for the next day and freeze the rest. Then, when I run out of the fridge stash I thaw another cube in the fridge overnight. I haven't had any of them pop open in the freezer. They ARE small, but that is perfect for a 6-month-old's beginner eating. My daughter (6 months) eats 1/2 to 1 cube full each meal. One of the other reviews says you can't microwave these. I have been-- just 20-30 seconds heats the food and hasn't damaged the containers. Also, they don't stain even if you freeze carrots or sweet potatoes in them. I am really pleased with these and am going to buy a set of the 2 oz cubes when she gets a bit older. These cubes make cooking your own baby food so easy!
Customer Review: Better ways out there Summary: 2 Stars
These trays are not useful. First, one ounce is too small. Second, the cups don't stay in the tray in the freezer (if you have a full freezer, like most, they fall out and like anything plastic once they hit the floor they break). Third, Once they are all filled you have to empty some to fill more and therefore cannot fill a big batch until they are all empty and your baby will lack variety.
Here's a better idea: Buy at least two silicone mini cupcake pans with at least 12 cups each. Puree or mash a large batch of food and spoon into baking cups. Place in freezer until frozen and then pop out into freezer bags. Use as little or as much as you would like. You are never stuck with mashed food that can't be stored because all your freezer containers are currently being used. For a toddler, use regular sized baking cups.
