This is great for walking -- in big stores it's the best way to make her feel secure, keep my hands free, and protect her from touchy strangers -- but it's also good for all the other stuff. I wear it housecleaning, cooking, and working.
Re: manufacturer's instructions: One set of instructions on a stroller warned not to fold it with the baby inside. DUH. Modern manufacturers are terrified of getting sued, so they list all kinds of warnings about what not to do with a product.
The reality is that you need to always use good judgement. No -- this is not the thing to wear to do jumping jacks in with baby aboard. But you can do basic tasks with baby in the carrier if you're careful. It's certainly no more dangerous than doing it with baby in arms.
Re: strap adjustments and baby's face -- we never had problems with her burrying her face in the straps. I'm pretty large chested at the moment myself and did not have this concern. Try fiddling with the straps and see if you can fix it.
When I finally broke down and bought the Baby Bjorn it was luxurious! The above problems -- all gone! They say this is the gold standard in baby carriers and I must agree.
The only problems other parents and I have had are that: 1) the baby isn't too crazy about it and, 2)one size does not fit all. I think it's either the plastic snap-lock contraption that's rubbing their little legs in the crotch, or that it's too confining or tight for baby. But I was persistent, and pretty soon my baby adjusted. We've been on countless walks with it and he's content for about 30 minutes to an hour max. Also, larger folks will need to get the larger strap system, purchased separately.
I'm going to keep searching for the perfect one, but those seeking a great all-around carrier, this one is worth the money...
When our son was a month to three months old, just being in the carrier would knock him out. Shopping trips became so much easier, because I had my hands free. My wife and I were driving a Saturn at the time, and it was tough getting a full size stroller into the car with the three of us in the car as well. Once we bought this carrier, the stroller was religated to Sunday tours around the neighborhood. But the Bjorn carrier was what we took to the doctor's office, to the mall, the gorcery store, to church, and to the book store. The padded straps helped keep my back from getting sore, and I liked the fact that I could easily lean my head down and give my son a kiss on the forehead when he was awake.
We don't use it as much now that our son is six months old, even though I'm pretty sure it could still be adjusted to fit him. But for what seemed like a good while, the Bjorn carrier kept both my son and me quite comfortable. I highly recommend it.
By the time my daughter weighed about 16 pounds, she was just too heavy for me to carry in the Bjorn. I wouldn't notice when I was carrying her, but at night I'd have terrible shoulder pains. So I was disappointed I couldn't use it for longer. But I don't think that's a design flaw, I think it's a human flaw (!).
The Bjorn is well-made and easy to use. My only real beef is that it's so darned expensive. The only other drawback is that it's hard to find a guy who's willing to wear it.
My only complaint is that the brochure claims that you can breastfeed while wearing the carrier--I have tried, but have not been able to manage it without taking the baby out and taking the carrier off. Other than that, I don't know what I'd do without our Baby Bjorn!!
