Baby Products Reviews of BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Original - Black, Classic

Customer Review: Love it, love it, love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Baby Bjorn gets rave reviews for good reason. It is a great product - don't be fooled by imitators. I tried others with my first child and hated them. They were too difficult to get on and to get the baby into and not particularly comfortable on my back and shoulders. The Baby Bjorn on the other hand is awesome! The design makes it relatively simple to load your baby in and the crisscross back with adjustable slide is about as comfortable as you can get. I also love my sling but there are times when the Bjorn is just more practical. Like when dashing through airports making connecting flights. And wandering through tiny shops where a stroller won't fit. And it was very handy keeping my son secured to me when we went elephant trekking in Thailand.

My toddler is probably pushing it for the weight limit but I still occasionally use it and he is now 16 months old and 26 pounds. (Some versions have 22 lb weight limits but others (mine included) are a bit higher.) Carrying around a 26 pound baby isn't the most comfortable thing in the world no matter how you do it but this carrier sure makes it easier. Best of all, in spite of being a curious and active wandering toddler he actually still enjoys being in it on those occasions when I do need to use it.

It may seem expensive compared to other brands but buy a Baby Bjorn carrier. It is definitely money well spent!

Customer Review: spinal compression
Summary: 1 Stars

i hate the bbj for several reasons & i look forward to the day when scientific evidence of the damage it does will be enough to pull it off the market.
1) the seat is too narrow, putting all of baby's weight onto the crotch, contributing to spinal compression. it is especially damaging to boys as the weight rests entirely on his testicals.
2) the legs are left to dangle stright down (see above), which does not promote proper hip development. in indigenous cultures the baby is worn with his legs spread or froggy-style, with belly contact against the wearer's body. this position allows the hip balls to properly connect to the socket. this also allows for baby's weight to be distributed across the entire bottom & thighs. can you imagine straddling a bicycle seat all day & not being able to touch your feet to take the weight off your crotch?
3) facing out for extended periods is not healthy for little ones. the world is big & too much stimulus can quickly overwhelm a baby, who is unable to turn away & bury his face in your chest. it is also vital for a bby to be able to see your face & gauge your reactions to people & events. they learn how to interact with the world by watching you, but if they are thrust out in front of you like a ship's head, this is impossible.

invest in a mei tai or other similar carrier, NOT the bjorn.

Customer Review: Is it perfect? No, but it is still a great carrier
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this in brown not long before I had our second son. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted but I am not the sling/wrap type of mom. I just remembered how my first son 12 1/2 years before had loved his little front carrier. Even though we had a big baby (9 lbs) he slumped in it awfully so I put it away and figured I would try every couple weeks. He finally got old enough to not slump but still hated it. He'd howl after 5 to 10 minutes. I was frustrated but I needed him to like some kind of carrier so we could go hiking. Then he got neck control and right at 4 months I put him in it facing out - and he loved it. No crying, nothing! Just happy as could be. He often falls asleep and I can easily flip him around by myself in a matter of a couple minutes. I especially like that putting the carrier on is EASY! Takes a minute and good to go.

With him now nearing in on 7 months and around 20 lbs we don't use this one as much - we have the larger Bjorn Active for hiking/extended trips - but keep it in the truck/diaper bag for store trips, etc. It saved my sanity while flying across the country and in airports, he bopped around on me, safe as could be. I also wore it at a long wedding and it kept him happy.
Its small size and pack ability is priceless.

Customer Review: Too much pressure on you baby's crotch
Summary: 1 Stars

I inherited a Baby Bjorn from a relative for my newborn. The Bjorn seems small and simple to use, but it's narrow crotch support puts too much pressure on my baby's crotch area (and she's only 10 lbs). Her crotch is always red with white blanched markings after each time she's carried in it. The rampant return of blood to that area had me fooled that she had diaper rash! I also didn't like that you couldn't just pull up that backing to hold your child to you like the Boba, Beco, Ergo, Lillebaby, heck like most other carriers. You had to snap the backing into straps on your chest which made for a less snug hold of your newborn to your chest. The chest straps also often fall away from your body making the hold even less snug and wind up scissoring my child's face in between the two straps. Often it's impossible to try to put your squirming child's leg into the half attached bjorn and then lift your whole child to attach the other side of the carrier. And the attachment of the back straps to the carrier body at the crotch area seems very unsafe as the slightest pressure on the inserts cause them to slide out of the attachment mechanism. If that should fail your child would slide right down out of the carrier. I'm on the hunt for another better designed carrier.

Customer Review: Read THIS! It may just save your back!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This has been one of my greatest buys for baby #1 and now #2. We are using the same bjorn I bought for DD #1 in 2004 and it still looks brand new. It is the best designed carrier, and that matters why? Because it is easy to use, you can lay down a sleeping baby, it is more comfortable for your baby and easier on your back. Spend the $! Get the Bjorn, you won't be sorry.
SAVE YOUR BACK:
Nearly every mom I see wearing their Bjorn is wearing it wrong! When they seem friendly, I share this tip with them. The black plastic cross piece in the back (where the straps cross through the plastic piece) MUST BE BELOW YOUR SHOULDER BLADES! Just about my bra line is where it is most comfortable, right in the middle. When my back starts to hurt, I reach my arm around my back and re adjust it lower. It is instant relief and comfort again! This makes sure the weight of the baby is on your frame instead of pulling at your shoulders. Everyone I tell is so happy, it makes a huge difference. Guess that's one plus of being a read-the-manual type.
The Bjorn is most comfortable until about 9 mos. The babies really seem to dig it about 4 mos plus, when they can face out. Before that, I love the Hotsling and Peanut Shell.
