Baby Products Reviews of Avent Isis Manual Breast PumpCustomer Review: Great pump even for Work/Stay-At-Home Moms! Summary: 5 Stars
The Isis Breast Pump is perfect for the Breastfeeding Stay-at-home Mom. I used it a lot in the early months to relieve heavy engorged breasts and to help establish a good milk supply. With this pump I was able to keep a plentiful stock of breastmilk in my freezer. Now that my little guy is one year old, I only use it a couple of times a week but with good results. This helps me maintain a full supply.
I cannot imagine using this pump for large quantities on a regular basis. If I was working outside the home, I would definately purchase a good electric pump. The results, in my opinion, would be less tiring on your hand and much faster. Using this pump would be way too time consuming...we moms know how precious time is when you have a baby to care for.
5 stars for its effectiveness as a "relief" pump or to establish a mini-stock. It encourages the "let-down" reflex necessary to get an effective flow to begin the pumping process. The Isis, I have found to be much better than electric brands available in most baby departments. It is also easy to use one handed as sometimes I would pump one side while baby was nursing on the other.
I am happy to have found this little pump. It has served me well for over a year now.
The ideal pump for the semi-regular pumping needs of any Work/Stay-at-home breastfeeding mom!
Customer Review: Great pump Summary: 5 Stars
I conducted extensive research when selecting a pump. I decided on the Avent, and I love it. It's convenient and efficient. I can pump one breast in less than 10 minutes. If you've never pumped before, it can take several times to get efficient with it. My first time, I pumped forever and only got 2 oz., but this happened also to my friend who used an electric pump she rented from the hospital. After a couple of tries, I was pumping 9 oz. in 10 minutes! (The Avent bottles have oz. markers on them, which is nice) This pump doesn't use batteries or require electrical current, so you can pump anywhere (like in your car if you're at work and don't have your own office). Another reviewer mentioned that she bought 2 Avent pumps, and both broke in the same place, where the pump screws onto the bottle-top. Mine did that, too, but (A) the pump still works fine, and (B) the pump has been redesigned due to this flaw in the older model (mine is 2 years old). I still heartily recommend this pump for any mom, regardless of how much/seldom you pump. I like the entire Avent system; the bottles convert to non-spill sippy cups as your child ages. I also bought the Avent sanitizer for the pump & bottles. It uses about an ounce or two of water and steams for 8 minutes to sterilize the pump. This pump is just as efficient as an electric pump, and it doesn't hurt my hand to use it.
Customer Review: I want an electric pump now... Summary: 2 Stars
I first got this pump because I was won over by the Avent bottles because I planned on breastfeeding and bottle feeding as well. I also got the Avent bottles because they said it would be easy for the infant to switch from bottle to breast, well after two months of trying to do just that my baby hates the avent bottles. He took the bottle for like 2 weeks, then didn't want it. Not only that but the pump is messy. While trying to pump the milk gets into the plastic message cushion and leaks all over you because it doesn't stay on completely tight. Also, it will sometimes leak where the pump and bottle connect. Also, if you want to put the pump down for a second be aware because if you don't stand it on the little white stand that is also used to cover the suction, your bottle will tip over and ALL your milk will waste...this happened to me about two times before I got fed up with it. I am a stay at home mom and thought this would be convenient for on the go pumping when I'm away from my baby, but how can you pump and be descrete with the pump making a squeeky noise. Above all, even though I thought the bottles would be perfect for bottle and breastfeeding it didn't work, and the pump will be traded in for an electric pump. The electric pumps are pricey (which is why I chose to take the cheap way out), but do buy the Medela or the Playtex electric pump.
Customer Review: No regrets Summary: 5 Stars
When I returned to work after my maternity leave, I planned to purchase an electric breast pump. However, it seemed like an unnecessary expense as I was finding it quite easy to pump 4-9 oz of milk at a sitting with my Avent Isis manual pump. During my first week back, three of my colleagues (who were pumping with electric pumps) told me that I was crazy to attempt to be a long-term pumper with just a manual pump. I am now in my third month of being back at work and I'm happy to say that I am not crazy. Pumping is going very well and I don't regret my decision in the least. The Isis pump is very light and very quiet, which makes it convenient to use most anywhere. This is important to me because I travel and have to slip into restrooms at my clients' offices to pump while on the road. Speed is also important and based on my colleagues' reports, I am just as quick as they are given it takes just fifteen minutes to pump 4-9 oz, and that includes the time it takes to rinse the pump and label the bottles. I do admit that it took me nearly 30 minutes when I first started, but after a couple of weeks I got the hang of it. Finally, I don't have any "repetitive injuries" from using the manual pump, a concern that one of my colleagues had. So, if you are trying to make the decision between a manual pump and an electric pump, I recommend the manual pump.
Customer Review: More milk leaked out than what went in the bottle!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
This pump is NOT efficient in multiple daily pumpings. There are many things wrong with this pump and I hardly know where to begin. First of all, the instructions are not user friendly. Like other Avent products, the manual relies on pictures that can be difficult to interpret. Once assembled, I found that the pump leaked as a result of the suction petals not attached completely and totally. During the process of pumping, the valve that creates the suction would become loose and I would have to unscrew the bottle and press it back into place. The pump squeaked sometimes and I couldn't quite figure out why. The instructions recommended changing the position of the petals on the breast to get the most milk, however, during this process it would leak even more because the milk would collect between the plastic and the suction petals when the milk was supposed to be going into the bottle. I also purchased the sterilizer which works great. However, the instructions insist on sterilizing the pump after each use. Frankly, there are just too many parts that have to be assembled and taken apart. I didn't think there was a need to have sooo many parts. Overall, this pump was very messy. For a manual pump, it was more complicated than it really had to be. And for all the reasons listed above, I find this pump to be overpriced and not worth buying.
