Baby Products Reviews of Avent Isis Manual Breast Pump

Customer Review: JUST AS GOOD AS MY ELECTRIC, MAYBE BETTER!
Summary: 5 Stars

I borrowed the fancy Medela pump from a close friend after she raved about it. I found it to be great. The only drawback was sometimes the only power outlet nearby was not too private and it was a bit noisy. People often wondered what the heck I was doing with all this buzzing coming out of the bathroom! I dreamt of a manual pump that didn't attract so much attention and was more convenient. So, I broke down and bought the Avent Isis pump since it was on sale at Babies R Us for $.. instead of $.. Well, let me tell you, I LOVE IT! I used it in the car the other day while my husband and I were driving, I used it in a public restroom (where the only outlet would have made me have to stand right next to the sink with people able to see me as they walked in and out) and I intend on using it in my office when I return to work in Septebmer. It takes a minute or two to get my milk to let down (the electric is faster in getting me going), but it gets just as much milk out of me as the Medela! I'm am pleasantly surprised and quite glad I didn't invest $... of my own money to buy my own Medela! It is even more comfortable than the electric when expressing milk! Those petal cushion thingy's really do feel kind of nice!
I highly recommend this pump and may even buy another so I can do both breasts at once! (average pumping time - 5-10 minutes per breast will give me anywhere from 2-4 ounces per breast! Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!)

Customer Review: Terribly Disappointed With This Pump- Consider Others First
Summary: 1 Stars

After spending $70 CDN, I expected more.My 6mo old is in the 75th %ile for weight so it's not a supply issue. I agree with Molly from Texas,it's a suction issue. I was told by the Avent rep to put vinegar in the water I sterilize with 1x per week (no more) and it works the pump session right after, but not subsequent pump sessions. I have only used this pump intermittently, but now that my infant is starting cereal, I NEED it to pump the milk I need daily to mix with his cereal and it's FAILING MISERABLY. The diaphram, the part with the white plastic sticking up for the handle, which I believe is the problem with mine is "patented", and the replacement is 11.95 +$15 S/H. I find that excessively expensive and insulting. You do have the option of mailing your entire pump and they'll check for problems, but it's at their discretion and it takes 4-6 weeks which doesn't help me at all because of the time involved and the fact you will probably just get it back with a lame excuse because these people do nothing but back this thing vehemently on the phone. They treat you like you're an idiot and it HAS to be your fault. They told me it should last 5 years with every day use and suitable to hand down to friends and family (yuck). I'm just a regular Mom with nothing to win or lose with this review. I'm just hoping to help another Mom before she puts out the money for something I feel is inferior and will let you down. Buyer Beware!!!!

Customer Review: Superb!
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this as a shower gift off of my registry, and wasn't really sure what to expect (this being my first go at motherhood and nursing). I was very pleasantly surprised at the ease with which I could use this, and during the time I was home on maternity leave, I had opportunity to practice and store up for an out of town wedding we attended and for when I first returned to work. The simplicity of this pump made a potentially intimidating situation a breeze.

I also own the Medela Pump 'N Style and while I found that to be a quality pump as well, once I got the hang of it, this pump allowed for more control over suction and for easier let-down. I also loved the convenience of this pump in that I didn't have to worry about any noise or finding an outlet, especially when I returned to work...I could use this pump anywhere, and I did. I also experienced cracking in the neck as some other reviewers have noted, but simply contacted Avent via the Web and they sent me replacement parts at no charge. I would also agree that there are a lot of little parts to disassemble and reassemble when cleaning this pump, but I never found that to be a deterrant in using it.

I would highly recommend this pump to any mom, new or not-so-new, who is looking for a comfortable, easy way to provide 'nature's best' to their little one. It worked marvelously for me, and I plan to use this again with my next baby, without hesitation.

Customer Review: This is the most frustrating product!
Summary: 1 Stars

Day 1 this pump worked just fine, although I noticed it squeaked (a minor irritation that I could ignore). Any time I slightly moved the pump, the edge of the cushion would loosen from the edge of the hard plastic and break the seal. Another minor irritation that I could deal with just by being very careful not to dislodge the pump while in use.

Day 2, however, was another story. The suction cushion leaked even though I very carefully attached it and pushed it as far into the neck as it seemed possible (I certainly wasn't this careful about doing this day 1). Most frustrating, however, was that the diaphragm that creates the suction would somehow independently lose its seal after depressing the handle just a few times - less than five depressions of the handle. Or, after keeping at it anyway, it would rebuild suction just to lose it after a few more depressions of the handle. Thinking the diaphragm had a flaw in it, I used the extra one that comes with the set. It worked with the first use, but then I had the same problem with it, too.

Having taken the unit apart and been extra, extra careful that it was assembled correctly with no success, I just don't think the problem was on my end. There is something about this pump that just does not reliably work, and the last thing we moms need (especially us 1st timers!) is the frustration. So save your money and buy something else.

Customer Review: A decent hand pump, but could be a lot better
Summary: 3 Stars

I had a hand pump from a previous pregnancy that was really taxing on my hands & arms and I had heard wonderful things about this one so I put it on my registry. First, let me say it is MUCH easier on my hands and does work pretty well. I do occasionally get better results with the Isis than with an electric and it's good for use while traveling. I also like that I can move around while I pump rather than having to sit around while I use an electric.

That said, it has some problems also. Mainly, it is not a pump that you should use if you are the least bit clumsy because if you knock it over accidentally, IT WILL LEAK! There is no real seal between the pump & the bottle, which can be very bad if you are pumping for a preemie (like me) or sick baby where every bit of breastmilk counts. I also dislike all the parts (twice as many as an electric pump) and the fact that milk gets in almost all of them. It's a pain to have to wash & keep track of them all in the middle of the night, not to mention the fact that my toddler likes to play with them all. My last complaint is that it is a very finicky pump to work with. It took me several days of practice just to get the positioning correct so that it would work & once I do get it working, if I move it the smallest amount, just the wrong way, it breaks the suction. So, all in all it is a good pump if you can overlook the problems.
