Baby Products Reviews of Avent Isis Manual Breast PumpCustomer Review: Better than my double electric Summary: 5 Stars
I initially bought this pump only to use when & where I would find it difficult to use my Medela Pump in Style Advanced (double electric). But instead, I have found it so much more effective that I'm using it all the time now.
When I bought it, about 5 weeks after my daughter was born, I had a very very low milk supply, and was pumping in an effort to increase it, but the double electric didn't seem to be helping. When I started using this pump, my supply began to increase, slowly but steadily.
I think the reason that this pump seems to be helping my supply, while the electric wasn't, is that it actually generates stronger suction, and I can tolerate that stronger suction because I'm in control more than with the electric. Also, since it only pumps one breast at a time, I can use my free hand to do breast compressions, which really helps empty the breast.
Some other advantages of this pump is that it's quicker to clean compared with a double electric, mostly because it has fewer parts. It's much lighter - a few ounces instead of 10 lbs. And it's quieter, although once in a while the handle makes a squeaking noise.
It does take a little bit of practice to get used to this pump, but it is very much worth the effort.
I have found that the massage petals help somewhat, but they also make it more difficult to get the nipple positioned so that it doesn't rub against the side; the pump works just fine without that part.
Customer Review: Best pump ever Summary: 5 Stars
I got the pump before my baby was born, but when we went to the hospital I saw I forgot the manual,I had the pump, but thinking all will go ok didn't put it togheter. So when I had to start pumping(my baby couldn't nurse right away)I used the hospital pump, which was Medela. At that point I never used any pump so I thought that I have no milk.I was able to pump in 15-20 min. only 20ml. which is nothing. My baby had to eat formula for few days,he couldn't latch on my breast, and I wasn't able to pump a lot.Well, we went home and I put my Isis pump togheter and for 15 min. I got 4-5oz. milk. From that moment on I have been using it every day,my son is still little and eats only one breast at one feeding,so I pump the other breast. I have no problems getting all the milk out. I had to return to work early,so I decided to get faster electrical pump, which pumps both breasts,so I went and got the electrical Medela in Style, which I heard is "the best pump",well I can tell you one thing for 20 min. with Medela from both breasts I was able to pump 2 oz.,which is funny when my milk supply from both breasts is 9oz. I was trying Medela for few days to see maybe something will change(you have to try when you spend $250 for something)With Avent Isis I get 9-10oz. milk in 20-30 min.I strongly recomend the Avent Isis, it works soooo good!I got the Medela only because I needed faster pump for work, but it did not work for me at all! Good thing I was able to return Review: Efficient, inexpensive, and portable Summary: 5 Stars
I have used this pump through all 3 of my children (I bought it in 1999), I can definitely say I've gotten my money's worth! I have nursed a total of 6 years, and this little pump has held up so well - I've not had a single problem with it.
The pump is small, very portable (compared with electric counterparts), and 20% of the price of the popular double electric models.
Your milk pumps directly into an Avent bottle, in which you can then store the milk or feed immediately.
There are some small pieces that need to be washed after each use - this can be difficult when on the road - this was really the only thing I considered less than ideal about the pump (although I'm not sure there's any avoiding that).
Every woman's body is different, so I cannot claim that this pump will work for everyone as well as it has for me. I didn't plan to use it as much as I did when I bought it (I didn't return to work full time, so I didn't think I'd need a double electric pump), however I ended up donating milk to a local milk bank after my first child was born. With this pump only, I pumped 12 oz every morning for my oldest child's first year. This took me about 15 minutes each morning.
For me, this pump has been economical, efficient, portable, and easy to use. It's obviously a personal thing - a pump can work great for one woman and poorly for another, but I have been extremely happy with this one.
Customer Review: best out there Summary: 5 Stars
I have the medela pump in style that I bought when I got pregnant and the avent from my last pregnancy. I have ended up exclusively pumping with this baby, and have gotten a lot of "pump time" to evaluate both products. Although medela's pump in style is a lot easier at 3 a.m. when you're half asleep, I have found that I get just as much milk (sometimes even quicker) with the avent pump than with the medela pump in style. After using medela's pump for a month my milk supply was gradually dwindling, so I decided to give my avent a go. I was able to get almost double in the same amount of time. It really helped to boost my supply again. I liked using it so much I went out and bought a second pump, so I could do both breasts at one time. For those who can not afford the pump in style, buying two Avent pumps are just as effective and fast. (not to mention at least $150 less!) The only benefits the medela has to the avent are the amount of individual pieces to wash- avent has many- and the ability to order different breast shields. Medela has the option for those of us with larger breasts to order larger shields, making pumping more comfortable. This feature is probably the only reason I use both pumps alternately instead of just the avent. If you have larger breasts and pump exclusively, the avent can irritate sensitive nipples. This is the only thing I would ever change about this product. You simply can not get a better product for this price!
Customer Review: Excellent buy, excellent price Summary: 5 Stars
I have a three month old and am successfully using the Isis breast pump and am back to work. When I was pregnant I did tons and tons of research on the web and asked all my "mom" friends. Everyone recommended a Medula electric pump (which by the way, I am sure they are great!). However, I wasn't crazy about the price. I decided to buy the Isis while I was pregnant to have around during those first 6 weeks for emergencies while home with my baby. I planned to buy an electric one IF the nursing thing worked out. I had read some reviews that said some women kept this as their ONLY pump and this intrigued me due to the low cost. They were soooo RIGHT!!. I use this pump everyday at work. It takes me about 10 minutes to pump 4-6 ounces at a time. Its small and lightweight. I carry it and 3 bottles all in one of those lightweight insulated lunch bags to work, with an ice pack enclosed. My advice: no matter what you chose, don't get discouraged in the first few weeks and don't make any final decisions about breastfeeding or the pump you are using until after 6 weeks. Everything takes time and you body has to get used to this new process. I am the most self-conscious person and I thought there was no way I would be able to nurse. I was wrong and I am so happy I stuck out the first few weeks of soreness and fatigue. I save so much money not buying formula and not having a major electric pump to have to lug back and forth to work. Good luck!!!
