Baby Products Reviews of Adiri BPA Free Natural Nurser Ultimate Bottle Stage 1 White, Slow Flow (0-3 months)Customer Review: Saved my marriage Summary: 4 Stars
Ok, that's a little bit of an exaggeration. But this was the last resort for us after trying to get the baby to take all kinds of nipples from my husband with no luck. If this one didn't work it was going to mean I didn't get to leave the house for more than 2 hours until the kid was on solid food, and things were getting pretty tense between the husband and me!
After a few days of easing into it, the baby now takes this bottle like a charm - even from me in his carseat while we're driving. Thank God.
The bottle has MAJOR design flaws, as noted by pretty much everyone. Here's how I avoid the problems - so successfully that I never lose any milk anymore.
1. Always hold the bottle by whatever is on the bottom (be it the screw on vent cap or the big cover), because the cover doesn't stay on at all. If you hold the bottle by whatever is on top, the cover will inevitably fall off and leave you with a lot of spilt milk.
2. Ignore completely Adiri's stupid instructions about inverting the bottle into the cover before you fill it and putting the nipple into the recessed space. It doesn't work and leaks anyway. Instead, forget the cover completely; simply wash your hand and hold your finger(s) over the nipple while pouring milk in.
3. Before using the bottle, thoroughly dry the screw-on grooves, both on the bottle and on the cap, so that where they screw together they create a good seal. Adiri advises also drying the nipple, the nipple recession in the cover, and I think the little vent disk area. I don't know if those steps are necessary but the screw grooves are.
4. Have your containers of milk pre-opened before you start the process so you're not fiddling with them while trying to cover the nipple hole with your other hand.
5. Once you've got your finger on the nipple, tilt the bottle the minimal angle necessary (ie, keep it as horizontal as possible). (In case of leaks, the more vertical the bottle is, the faster the milk leaves the nipple, so this way you save as much as you can.) Then screw the cap on as tight as you can, turn it right side up, and screw it further one more time to see if you can get it tighter. Don't put the cover on if it's not necessary - its loose grip on the bottle will cause accidents.
6. Buy the "warming cap" if you'd like to be able to heat the milk by running the Adiri directly under water instead of pre-warming it. Just keep the nipple out of the stream of water.
Tip to Adiri...next time you update the bottle, it would be awfully easy to print a second set of oz/ml measurements going up from the bottom, so that whichever direction the bottle is pointing in, it's easy to tell how much is in there. Not sure why this hasn't been designed in already - it's sort of obvious.
A word of advice about introducing the Adiri if your baby has rejected other bottles - make it like a relaxed game for the baby. Try to de-stress and just approach the baby in a fun way, *without the goal at first* of having her or him actually drink from the bottle. Just give it a few days where your only goal is to let them play with the nipple in their mouth. This bottle feels good to them, which leads them eventually to suck on their own if they're not too freaked out, and I think the stress of us parents about how badly we need them to take a bottle really rubs off on the baby.
Customer Review: Looks Great but did not work for me Summary: 1 Stars
My baby is breastfed but since day one Daddy would give her a bottle of expressed breast milk every night when he gets home from work. That was my way of giving him quality time with the baby and part of his bonding time. I felt so connected to my daughter when I breastfeed her that I wanted my husband to experience even just a little piece of that feeling. She always switched between bottle and breast like a champ and she wasn't picky about what types of bottles we used (we received a couple of different brands of bottles from our baby shower). Then out of nowhere, one day, she just refused to take the bottle and screamed and cried profusely. We were in shock and finally understood what the other moms were raging about regarding nipple confusion. It broke my heart to see her screaming in discontent as if crying sadly "why won't you feed me~" and gagging when we tried to put the bottle in her mouth. The Dr. Brown bottles were the first ones to go since they are nothing like the breast. We went out and bought the One Step Ahead Adiri Natural Nurser (Breastbottle Nurser) and The First Years Breastflow Bottles and experimented with both. The Adiri failed miserably and we eventually got our 2.5 months old baby girl to take the Breastflow bottle by also warming the milk. I was glad that my daughter chose the Breastflow bottle because it was much easier to work with. It was nearly impossible for me to fill the Adiri bottles because, unlike other bottles, the bottom unscrews instead of the top. Therefore I had to make sure the bottle cap is on securely before flipping it upside down to fill it with breast milk. (I can't believe their web site boasts that it can be done with one free hand, because I can barely get it not to leak with two.) P.S. If the cap isn't on tightly the milk will start coming out from the nipple which is now upside down as you are trying to fill the bottle. And because the cap closes by pushing up against the silicone bottle and not clicked in like other bottles, it fits snugly against the rubber like surface and is extremely hard to undo. I hated having to pull the cap off after I've finally filled the bottle...also these bottles are tall and you'd really have to have a good sized steam sanitizer in order to fit the bottles and the caps in, I could only fit 2 Adiri bottles and caps at a time in my Philips Avent iQ24 Sterilizer. For $13 a piece they really should be better designed. The bottle looked great (like breast) when I saw it but the nipple is still quite long and I think that's why my baby would gag when I tried this bottle with her. My recommendation to other Moms: try the Breastflow bottle first with warm milk (the milk should be slightly warmer than freshly expressed milk). Hopefully the First Years Breastflow Bottles will work for your baby and you can save your money.
Customer Review: No nipple confusion! Summary: 5 Stars
We've used these bottles for 4 months now, on and off, and to be honest, they were hard to get used to, but once we got the hang of it, we love them! Here's what we did to solve the common problems:
1) The first time we used it, it leaked. Once I was sure to tighten the lid securely, that was no longer an issue.
2) Then there was the issue of trying to get the milk into the bottle without it leaking out of the nipple. I, too, tried using the lid. The lid does not work to keep the milk in the bottle, and once you turn it back upright, the milk that leaked into the lid is all over the place. What I do now is wash my hands, hold the bottle upside down in one hand with my index finger over the holes in the nipple, and with my free hand pour the milk in, screw the lid on, then turn it right-side up.
3) The odd shape of the nipple takes some getting used to, if you are used to using regular bottles. You have to treat this bottle like a breast. When breastfeeding, the baby needs to take in as much of the breast as possible, not just the nipple. So, just like breastfeeding, it takes a little while to get the right "latch". Once we got that down, our daughter drank the bottle down fast, even on the slow-flow bottle.
4) It does take a while to heat these bottles up. We try to use fresh milk in the refrigerator as much as possible, because frozen milk takes quite a bit longer to warm up. The milk can always be heated in a different container and then transferred to the bottle, or just do what we do: plan ahead. We try to get the bottle into some hot water about 1/2 hour before we anticipate her being hungry.
Now, to the reason I love these bottles: we took a break from pumping and bottle-feeding for about 2 months. We just didn't have a need to do it, and pumping, storing, and re-heating milk is a lot of work compared to just feeding the baby straight from the tap. We tried the bottle again after that break, and she took it without a problem. I know people who have tried to give their breastfed babies bottles with no success, and wound up never being able to leave their children with anyone for more than a couple of hours at a time. Being able to leave my baby with her father while I go somewhere, and not having to worry that she might be crying and hungry when I get home, is a wonderful thing!
Customer Review: Good in theory... Fair execution Summary: 3 Stars
I wanted a bottle that would prevent nipple confusion allowing me to be a breast feeding mother after returning to work. The design of this bottle and the nipple is extremely similar to a breast. We waited 6 weeks before introducing this bottle and my son took to it very quickly. He latched on, with his lower lip flipped out and the bottle mushed into his nose - much like a breast. His latch did become more shallow, but not enough to damage my breasts or prevent continued breast feeding. We were so excited that we failed to see all of the negatives.
The milk leaks out of the nipple so quickly that you can lose up to a half an ounce before your child gets the bottle. The lid, therefore, must remain on until the absolute LAST second before feeding. Milk will leak into the lid, and then milk will drip all over your child before the bottle is in their mouth. This frustrates my son.
My son can consume 5 ounces from this bottle in under 3 minutes. Even though he is four months old we still use the Slow-Flow (for 0-3 months) because of the speed in which he can drink. He gets horrible gas and spits up excessively. I won't transition to the Stage 2 or Stage 3 bottles because of this.
There is no way that this is a one-handed system. It is hard to twist on the base, and the lid must always be used.
As another user said, the milk must be heated up in another container (like your storage bags) and then poured into this bottle.
The design of the nipple requires it to be full of milk... so when you get down to .5-1 ounce left your child will pull in a LOT of air. That's a big negative.
Also, we wash this bottle on the top-shelf of our dishwasher (as the package states is acceptable) and after the first wash one bottle came out entirely orange, including one base. I immediately hand-washed it, thinking it was dyed by spaghetti sauce or something... and the bottle remained bright orange.
Anyway... this bottle is good in theory, but fair in execution. We are going to try The First Years "Breastflow" tomorrow and if all goes well we will make the switch.
Customer Review: Best travel bottle ever Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't sure about this bottle at first becuase it is so different, but once i got used to it it is truely the easiest and most portable bottle there is. I have 'Green to Grow' bottles too (because the wide neck fits my old 'Second Nature' nipples), which i just bought to replace my 'Second Nature' bottles because of the BPA controversy, but their nipples don't seem to be feeding my baby very well- she is drinking 2-3 oz slowly vs. the Adiri where she will finish off 4-6oz in normal time. It is alot like the breast which is why I like it also- but you have to add a little pressure while feeding so she/he actually gets her whole mouth around the end, not just the nipple (like the breast). I am still using 'Second Nature' nipples which simulate the breast in letdown, but am no longer breast-feeding so I am phasing those out.
I have yet to move onto the blue bottle (phase 2), but I think i am going to stick with Adiri from now on. Less parts, great looking, great for travel, and great for not taking in too much air. Only complaint is that you can't warm them in a warmer- the liquid must be warm when poured in (they are fixing that by August) and also it does leak sometimes while shaking (not while nursing).
If you're gonna do BPA free, I would at least buy one and try this bottle- it is very revolutionary and could be the answer to your prayers if you are having problems feeding.
