Baby Products Reviews of 4moms Digital Bath Spout Cover with Built-in ThermometerCustomer Review: A year later, we still LOVE ours Summary: 5 Stars
First, we had no issues whatsoever with fit on our 'standard' faucet. In fact, this one works where others have not because it has an opening on top to allow for the shower pull.
We've had NO issues with faulty or erratically fluctuating temp readouts. It's read accurately and consistently since day 1. We don't burn through batteries all that quickly (as we're sure to turn it off after we're done running the tub, but it does have an automatic shut-off for those times it gets forgotten), but we have replaced them once and it easily went right back on and right back to working well, as it always has.
It's proven very useful for us, as we can't always 'set' the faucet to the same spot and get the same temp (seems to vary by when/where in the heating cycle our water heater is). But, we always turn it to about the same spot, let it run just enough to warm up (no need taking a temp reading when we know it's still cold), turn on the spout cover, and then adjust a bit from there. Once we get that green screen, we know we're good to go and can 'set it and forget it' til it's time to shut off the water and put the kids in.
We're also finding added benefit as our older child begins to discover more autonomy. She's old enough to understand the basics of hot water safety, but this allows her to get the temp just right w/o a lot of guesswork (and potential burns) on her part.
We LOVE it, and can't wait for the shower-head equivalent!
Edit to add: 10/27/08 - 2 years in, a battery change (or 2?) and we still ADORE ours!
Edit 10/30/09 - 3 years in now, 2-3 battery changes, and we STILL love it. Don't know if they can be found anywhere still, but we'd definitely buy this one again.
Customer Review: Great--when it worked Summary: 3 Stars
I used this thermometer for my baby's first three months and it worked wonderfully. It fit nicely over my standard bath spout and it was truly helpful to see the temperature of the water BEFORE it filled the tub. The color display was easy to see and it allowed me to quickly change the temp of the water before it became too hot or cold. I also loved being able to fill up my rinse cup with the correct water temperature. I know this doesn't sound like such a huge deal but the water temp in my bathroom has a tiny "sweet spot" and it's either way too hot or freezing depending on a fraction of an inch on the faucet handle. Anyway, this product was a blessing to have until it just stopped working after about 3 months of use. One day it just failed to turn on and even after changing the batteries (and trying several sets of new batteries) it just never came back. I don't know if it got water inside the unit or what...I think that the idea of this product is exceptional, I just wonder if the execution isn't quite there yet. I will be switching to the old-fashioned rubbery ducky thermometer as I'm not shelling out another $30 for one of these.
Customer Review: Seemed like a good idea but not recommended Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this several months ago and am still using it. I really like the ease of setting the water temperature where I like it then being able to leave it while I get my daughter ready. However there are quality issues. It will slide off easily if even grazed, so we have to be careful when turning it on/off or using the shower. We also have to keep my daughter's hands from it, and of course she wants to touch it a lot! It is not easy to put back on either. Lately the on/off button has become very hard to depress which of course puts pressure on the unit. For the price I expected better.
Update: the little rubber piece that helps hold the unit on the faucet has completely detached and the on/off button barely works so this is now garbage. Would not recommend as it didn't even last a year. Couldn't get my star rating to change but would now only give one star!
Customer Review: Great concept poor construction Summary: 1 Stars
This is a great idea and would work great but it has some major flaws. It doesn't fit the faucet correctly and is constantly threatening to slip off. The battery life is horrible and it has started turning on unexpectedly. Its falling apart. There is a little black plastic spacer that holds onto the faucet and it just fell off. Also, the button is becoming impossible to press so its a struggle to make it turn on and off. I have only had this for a few months and there is much to be desired. Now I am just using it as a bump protecter but its so unstable it was a complete waste of money. As for temperature checks, we have a rubber ducky with "too hot" written on the bottom and I also just use my wrist since you really have to do that anyway since nothing is perfect and its better to double check than be sorry. I love the idea but hate the product.
Customer Review: Not worth the money,... Summary: 2 Stars
I registered for this item, it seemed like such a great idea as a first time mom. I knew I would need a spout cover at some point, so I thought I'd go for this item and get the built in water thermometer, too. For starters, it did not really fit on my STANDARD spout and it was sort of a pain to attach! While it did show me what I believe to be an accurate read of the water temperature, I felt like I wasted so much water trying to get it exactly in the green zone - the thermostat very quickly goes up and down! I returned mine. My friends who are seasoned moms were right, I could easily gauge the water temp with my hand/arm. Save your pennies and if you want a spout cover, buy one of the very inexpensive inflatable or foam ones. If you want a thermometer, buy one of the inexpensive rubber ducks that have one built in.
